    Automatic wireless backup.

AirPort Time Capsule includes a 2TB or 3TB hard drive that works with Time Machine in OS X to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution.1 There are no cables, and you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location — automatically, wirelessly, and in the background.

    Ultra-fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Time Capsule gives you up to 3x faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal.2 And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible.

    Designed with performance in mind.

With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Time Capsule now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. We also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them — three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

    image.alt.pdp-airport-setup

Easy setup for iOS and OS X.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to AirPort Time Capsule and use the built-in setup assistant to create your new wireless network in just a few taps from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you’re using a Mac, use the built-in AirPort Utility. Setup is just as fast and just as easy.

    image.alt.pdp-airport-share

Share your hard drive or printer.

AirPort Time Capsule can turn any external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi-Fi network. So all the documents, videos, photos and other files instantly become available to anyone, Mac and PC users alike. You can even connect a printer and share it wirelessly.

    Compatibility and security.

Any Wi-Fi device you have will work with AirPort Time Capsule. That’s because it’s compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n and 802.11ac specifications. And since AirPort Time Capsule features a built-in firewall that protects your network from malicious Internet attacks, you can enjoy the web with peace of mind.

It took 20 hours to back up my iMac straight via ethernet, and then I relocated it to use its connectivity to hook up other remotely located gear (TV, XBox and Apple TV) to the AirPort which is connected via ethernet to my BT Hub 4 using a TP Link powerline adapter. It's really handy to have a second wifi network and means my iPad works consistently in my bedroom, for example. Internal walls really are pesky for wifi due to inconsistent connection, whereas suspended wooden floors aren't. So I am pleased with it. I guess one day server farm capacity will mean you'll be able to back up your back up as well via the cloud at a reasonable data storage rate. In the meantime the chance of both Mac and Capsule hard drive failing at the same time should be statistically very unlikely. So all in all, for once the rule that every piece of technology designed to make life simpler actually introduces new complexity is not true, so the time capsule gets five stars for doing the job it says it'll do.

Shared USB external Hard Drive can't be backed up using Time machine

Disappointed that the Shared external USB Hard Drive can't be backed up using Time machine, little backwards here i think especially at this price point, this w Disappointed that the Shared external USB Hard Drive can't be backed up using Time machine, little backwards here i think especially at this price point, this was one of the main reasons i bought the Capsule, i foolishly expected this facility. Don't expect Guest network to work in all cases. Appart from that it's ok.

      Magic

I have a Sky Hub which I thought was doing well until i met this baby. We live in an Apple household, 2 iPads, 3 iPhone, a Mac and an Apple TV3 and 4 so I thought it made sense to have an Apple Network to use them with. Also given the fact that we have 3.80 download speed on rural boardband anything is worth a try. So plugged into the Sky Hub, popped up Airport Utility on the Mac and within minutes it had run the set up itself and bang it was done. The longest part of the whole process was reseting the Belkin Extenders I have but that was not its fault. So does it make a difference to my board band speeds, well yes and no and here's where the magic is. I still get 3.80 download speed but before say when I was downloading a large file, my wife was streaming on her iPad and the kids where watching Netflix on the Apple Tv, something had to give - usually me. It just couldn't cope. However with this one week later we can pretty much do all our own thing at the same time without noticing any slow down - amazing. The download is still 3.80. In terms of Back-Up = be warned the first one takes forever and was the only time the Network slowed down, the first night therefore can be a bit depressing but hold your guns, after that you'll start to notice the difference. Further back-up's have been small and quick and not even noticed. So given all that I have began to replace the Belkin Extenders with the Airport Express - first one set up today and making the whole thing run even better! It is in the office with my Mac and boy do they love with other. Last word - worth every penny, no more Dad running around turning of devices to cope with bad boardband - fiddling with Sky Hub settings to change channels etc etc etc. Goodbye to all that!

      Rubbish!!

Little did I know that it would take 5 days and a long phone call with apple support to set it up! (The apple support guy was very good in the end, hence the 1 star!!). Finally it was working along side my bt router and not instead of the bt router, but i have persevered. Since then it has taken 11 hours to back up 4GB of data!! As I have 1 TB of data to back up,myself and the equipment will very old by the time it is complete. I expected much more from an Apple product and I'm very disappointed with it. Do NOT waste £249!!!!
