    New iMac new backup drive.

    • Written by from Aberystwyth

I bought the LaCie 1TB P9223 as backup for my new iMac 21.5 (OSX Yosemite 10.10.4). My older iMac (2007 – OSX Tiger and still going strong) has been retired to the bedroom. I have a LaCie backup drive also for the older iMac and it has worked perfectly for nearly eight years. It was used to transfer all my files to the new iMac, as the Migration Assistant is not compatible with OSX 10.4.

The LaCie P9223 arrived the next day after ordering from the Apple Store and was easy to install, but I could not register it as requested by the LaCie Setup Assistant and was informed of a ‘server error – please try again later’. I then registered it separately online with the LaCie website.

It is externally robust in its aluminium casing and sits well above the Apple SuperDrive on the foot of the iMac. When requested by the LaCie Setup Assistant, I opted for 100% partitioning for Mac. This is simply achieved by dragging the slider displayed in the Setup Assistant all the way to the left to illuminate the default partition and clicking OK. When the prompt to choose the Apple Time Machine for backup was displayed I selected OK and Time Machine started the first backup. I took 35 minutes for around 90 GB. Thereafter, Time Machine has been backing up so far without a problem.

I have not impaled myself on the ‘sharp corners’ of the casing as mentioned by some reviewers, but as I don’t need mobility – using it exclusively for the iMac –this is not a problem, although I see what they mean. I have no horror stories to relate, and if the reliability of my previous LaCie drive is equaled by the P9223 I will have none.

    Excellent... when it works

I've had this product for some time now and for the most part it's great, it allows you to create a partition that you can use to connect to windows devices and it looks really good and professional.

However, I have encountered quite a serious issue which is that even if you are extremely careful and safely remove the disk overtime, for some unknown reason (to me anyway) the disk will not mount. For those not in the know, that basically means, your computer will not recognise the disk and therefore not be able to read it. My macbook (and every other device in my house that I can connect it to (windows PCs, TVs, other MacBooks of varying ages) can read the share partition but not the main partition. I have tried using disk utility which says that I need to repair the device and then it says that it cannot be repaired and I must restore it. The first time this happened, I somehow managed to fix it through pure luck (I think I connected it into my TV) without restoring it but this time I am having no such luck.

I am writing this review whilst I try and figure out how to fix the device as it has just happened for the second time and of course, I am reluctant to wipe the disk as I cannot retrieve any files from it currently.

    Solid performer

I am using this primarily to back up my MacBook and it's absolutely amazing. It works perfectly with Time Machine and transfers huge chunks of data without a hiccup. Runs like a charm, doesn't get hot, and hasn't disconnected once since I got it. The aluminium casing is lightweight and very solid. I have been carrying it in my laptop bag without a cover for several months now and it doesn't even have a scratch on it.

    lost everything

    • Written by from Newcastle

I used this for 8 months and after taking nearly 10000 photos while travelling and using the hard drive for storage the hard drive has failed on me and lost all my data. Absolutely devastated and dying to find a decent data restoring company to see if i can get it all back, however the parts are apparently really rare to find. It was plugged into my computer and working find hen suddenly disappeared. It had failed a few times before where I used the disc utility to verify and repair it but this time it just completely died. I would not use this product again as it is completely unreliable and has cost me a lot of time, money and heartache.

Failed twice in 7 months of purchasing...

    • Written by from Caernarfon

Bought this in January 2014 and was using it for a good two months constantly with all my photography and music work then the drive decided to fail on me and lost all my data. Had it refurbished quickly and thought that would be the end of my problems but 3 months on after being fixed the motor has gone so lost all my data again for the second time and Lacie won't hold responsibility to recover my data. A really good product while it lasted but very poor build. A product shouldn't go wrong twice in 7 months of owning. Definitely changing to another product.

Fast, efficient, quiet and easy to set up

    • Written by from Buchlyvie

The unit is compact - handy if you want to use as a portable device. The set up is easy and allows customisation to suit different needs (i.e. MAC only or MAC and Windows). I set mine up as MAC only to use as a Time Machine back up. The speed of the initial back up and the apparently silent operation are quite impressive. Only a few days into using it, so too early to comment on reliability, but so far I am very happy with the device.

    A brilliant device

What attracted me to this unit was the brushed aluminum look that goes with my MacBook Pro. What sealed the sale were the rest of the unit's features: the large amount of storage space, the USB 3 interface, the seamless integration with Time Machine, the encryption software, and the energy saving feature. This drive has become an extension of my computer, and it works great.

    Works really well so far

    • Written by from Ongar

I have only had it a short while but so far so good. I have transferred all my iPhoto's on to there. My MacBook was full so I used time machine first to get a copy of my photos on a separate drive then used my LaCie to copy the iPhoto library onto. It automatically now goes to that drive. By hitting command and then clicking on iPhoto I can select the drive I want it to open iPhoto on. Works really well streams videos and pictures at top notch speed.
Now my MacBook has lots of space on it. I do have 53000 photos though. Would definitely recommend.

    Great Product

This is a great little unit that is fast, works with Time Machine and looks just as sleek as anything, which are the three main things that are important to me. I also appreciate the compact size and the fact that, as a result, there's no fan noise.

    Excellent Design and Performance

Usually, I delete any software that's been preinstalled on an external drive, but I happened to notice the backup application on this unit before I deleted it, along with the encryption program. Both have turned out to be functional and useful applications. I'm very happy with this unit otherwise. It has worked very well, with not the slightest problem at all.

This is a great device for working with my MacBook Pro. It was quick and easy to configure with Time Machine, straight out of the box. The USB 3.0 is fantastic for transferring data. It's very fast. It's been a while since I've used a drive quite like this one and I must admit, I'm very impressed.

    Excellent portable drive

I do a lot of design work for clients, and as a "one-man shop", I also have a fair share of face-to-face time with them. So it's important for me to exude a confident and well-designed look when I go into a meeting. The Porsche design of my P'9223 fits in well with my Mac, complementing its excellent technical features.

    Good Drive

    • Written by

After comparing physical sizes, storage capacities, interfaces, and looks, I opted for this Porsche drive for my "mobile" tech support business. With the P'9223, I get the storage space that I need, a USB 3.0 interface that doesn't waste my time, in a package that's compact and very well designed.

Easy setup, not sure about the design

    • Written by from CAERPHILLY

I bought this as I had had a frustrating experience trying to format a Maxtor One-Touch to operate on my Mac. it was certainly easy to set up and operate. However, this Porsche design may be elegant, but the case is simply an aluminium oblong with sharp corners that are uncomfortable in the hand. Fortunately, i only need it as a desktop external drive, as I dislike the feel of it and wouldn't want to handle it for portable use. I would have preferred to do without the porsche design and save £20 or so. But it does work well and that's its saving grace.

I needed a secure and reliable drive for backup. I bought this one and I'm very happy with it. The design is excellent and the drive works very well. It's quiet and fast. It came with all necessary cables and 10GB of cloud storage. I think it's an excellent solution.

    Great form and function

Picked up this from Apple store today and formatted using LaCie utility software built on hard drive, no sweat. Then set up as Time Machine back up. Did the back up in no time at all. So far so good. No problem. Got funny little rubber feet you have to stick on yourself - that's quite weird. Apart from that all is gooood.
