Breaks my heart to only give 4 stars, but..

One small factor that might be important to consider regarding the A7 from B&W if you're going wireless. The sound is amazing, and all the other reviews give this truly astonishing speaker all the fame and glory it deserves.

I just want to add a small label of caution to it: It is not Dualband WiFi (5 GHz, 802.11a/n) but "only" to the old 11/54mbit wireless technology (2,4 GHz, 802.11b/g), so if you live in an area flooded with B/G networks hogging broadcast channels, you are likely to experience frequent disconnects while streaming.

This happened to my other devices as well, and only stable solution was making everything dualband in my home and ethernet-cable this bad boy to my router, so I can still enjoy the supreme music experience through the A7.

High end sound for a small & sleek speaker

    • Written by from Edinburgh

B&W designed this to be a discreet speaker in your living room, aimed at almost being hidden amongst your books on your bookcase. I've had the A7 for around a year and just continue to be impressed with the sound quality. I've got a pretty big open living/kitchen area & the volume is just over half to fill the area adequately. It has plenty of volume for a house party if needed. However it times it can be a little bass heavy and its a shame this can't be adjusted. Airplay has been very reliable for streaming music from Mac, iPhone or Apple tv. This is a long term investment which will always have a place in my house.

    Almost a one star until...

I was about to return this speaker - because of the wifi/Airplay link not working very well. I have a strong signal and use Airport Extreme router , so was very disappointed when the speaker kept spluttering and stalling whilst using the Airplay setting - it was happening at least once every couple of minutes and also losing the network setting. I had to keep resetting the speaker and inputting all the wifi settings. In the end I moved my modem and router into the same room as the speaker and now the Airplay works perfectly. The sound quality is excellent and cannot be faulted. The speaker is quite small so fits perfectly on a book shelf. I've connected it to my iPhone and iPad without any issues and also trialled the USB input which works really well should it ever be required. I'm now delighted with it - and it deserves the 5*

Having been a Bower & Wilkins fan and owning a good few of there products for many years another fantastic product .
    Bass and clarity superb .
I know the price is maybe high but you get a product that is built by craftsmen that know how to build speakers.
Well done again to Bower & Wilkins

Top Notch sound for an AirPlay Speaker.

    • Written by from Cradley Heath

Connected to our wifi very easily using the B&W app.
Works faultlessly without any dropouts, sound is excellent and blows away BOSE docking stations I have used before but I guess that should be expected for the price.

We have quite a large house, our wifi setup is Netgear Wifi Router + Range Extender + Time Capsule. This just about covers the whole house.

We have noticed that if you are streaming from an iPhone and you move from one station to the next it can cause dropouts but this is more a limitation of AirPlay/Our Wifi. Not sure if there is someway to improve this.

All in all though very happy.

Amazing Audio, Superb Build Quality, Highly Recommended A+

    • Written by from Tunbridge Wells

I had done extensive research on a number of Airplay speakers from Sonos, Bose, B&W and others and ended up deciding on a Bowers & Wilkins A5 and an A7.

After an initial and very easy setup on my iPhone I had a little trouble in picking the A7 up through wifi (the A5 was fine). After searching on the internet I discovered problems with Airplay devices can occur due to the router settings (so if you have problems check if your router is "n" and "g" compatible and also firewall settings etc), however once that was solved I was able to be fully blown away by the audio quality of these devices.

I had already heard them in a shop but once they had the closer acoustics of my rooms at home they sounded even better! I used to have Bose Soundocks and in all honesty these eat those for breakfast!

The build quality is excellent as is the audio quality. Personally I really like the design - they look inconspicuous yet stylish.

The balance of bass, middle and treble is perfect. Very deep bass (especially on the A7) pounds the airways with crystal clear trebles and everything in between. To say I am impressed is an understatement and considering the size of these devices I think B&W should be commended on the quality they provide.

The A5 and A7 are not cheap but I believe they are well worth the money. My only negative other than the price is that there is no instruction manual included, however they can be downloaded in pdf format from their website.

If you are looking for some serious audio equipment for your iOS device or to play from your PC/Mac, look no further…

    Simple and stunning

    • Written by from Plymouth

Setup took less time than unboxing. Easy but naturally, RTFM!

The sound is, for a single box, stunning. To qualify what I say, let me tell you that I use an AK120 with an RSA blackbird and an Ultrasone Edition 8 set of cans for my portable setup after years of experimentation with portable sound.

The box can sound a little bass heavy if you position it incorrectly, but overall the trebles are clean and detailed without much discernible sibilance, the mid tones are strong and refined without being domineering. The bass is extended and clean without being boxy.

The SN ratio is excellent across the whole range at all volumes.

I have a rather extreme HiFi setup, but there are times I listen to the music and actually forget it is just the A7 I have put on and not the dual mono block valve amps and the electrostatics. Yes, it is that good if you take some time to position it right.

Solid build quality. Not as uber-stylish as some people reckon (in my opinion) but nice and discrete and easy to forget about until you stream some content through it.

    Highly recommended.

I love my new A7. It's convenient, it sounds great and it doesn't take up space. If I'm only popping home for 10 minutes, I can play from my iPod Touch iOS 7, at the drop of a hat. I don't need to power up the Mac. Listening to classical music through this speaker is ab fab. No problems with Airplay, so far, fingers crossed. Well done Bowers & Wilkins.

    Simply Magnificent

    • Written by from Milford

A magnificent product, tremendous piece of industrial design and performance. Musical excellence, coupled with cutting edge technology, create an incredibly compelling product.

    Minimalist, classy, expensive.

    //Build Quality
Absolutely what you would expect from Bowers & Wilkins - top notch. From the nautilus tweeters, to the class D amplifiers powering each driver, this speaker oozes quality.

Sublime! Detailed throughout the range, well balanced, and delivering the vinyl-esq warmth that is the B&W trademark. The soundstage produced from one box is incredible. The DAC upscales lossy MP3s to deliver a depth that only the most discerning of audiophiles will be pick holes in. In a word, incredible.

Flawless, delivering lossless streams from iPad, iPhone and iMac without issue. One cautionary note, lossless streams require a strong WiFi connection to prevent break in streams from packet loss.

A doddle, the app from B&W is simple and effective.

    //A7 or A5?
I have both the A7 and the A5, so can make a real life comparison between the two. The A7 provides a more dynamic range from the seperate sub-woofer, offering greater detail in the low to mid range. The A5 therefore has a 'fresher' feel, with greater reliance on mid range. However, both are incredible, and in a blind test the average consumer would be hard pushed to notice the difference. If you have the money, get the A7, however if you get the A5 you will be more than happy.

This speaker will make you love with music again. Get one without hesitation.

    Powerful and Detailed

    • Written by from Manchester

I have been a fan of Bowers and Wilkins since I got the MM-1's, so I was interested in listening to the A7 particularly as I'm limited for space in my flat.

The unit itself is stylish and more importantly sonically packs detail and power, from New Order to the Clash it handles really well. Just be careful where you place it, I have it 2 inches away from the wall and the bass is really tight.

Not cheap, but great piece of hardware.
