I bought it from Apple store Birmingham (Bullring). The sound quality is perfect. Setting up is very easy with the developed software (which has been updated recently). I read some of the low rated reviews, it seems they have problems with airplay, to have a good airplay stream you need a good network connection. Therefore you should have a very good Wi-Fi router for the "airplay stream". I had the same problem at first but then I found out that the "router" given by my broadband service provider is not suitable for airplay stream & bought a new router. Currently I enjoy using it via airplay 3 to 5 hours a day with no problem. The sound quality is absolutely perfect.

Setup is beyond easy. Took 3 minutes. Good speaker.

    • Written by from Dayton

Anyone who criticizes this speaker based on setup needs to put down the bowl and read the directions in the app... or get a decent wifi access point.

Great build quality as you would expect from B&W. My only gripe is the apparent inability to adjust bass & treble for placement and room EQ. The mid bass is muddy and there's a little too much bass at high volume based on the corner placement for spousal aesthetic requirements. I shoved some napkins in the rear bass reflex port to clean up the mid-bass. Sounds better. The big bass sells in the store but does not translate well to the home listening sitch, unless you're 18 and hooked on the EDM drops.

Does the job, though I prefer my Sonos Play 5s for similar money and ability to do room EQ.

Just got my second replacement. First one got locked into not recognizing any networks, nor being able to play through cable. Having owned the new unit for 2 months I can now only play this one through laptops not running Yosemite, and then it only works for between 12-30min before the signal drops unexplainably, if there was a way to upgrade the hardware it might be a good buy but as it stands it's only good for if you want to play it wired in, then it sounds great and works. Don't buy it, even if it sounds great, it won't keep up with software updates, my iphone, my ipad and my airbook can't see it, my old macbook from 2010 can play it fine.

    An Excellent Airplay Speaker

    • Written by from Chippenham

I have had this speaker for five months now. It is very simple to set up using the ios app. The speaker does need a 20-30 hour bedding-in period as they were quite muffled when they came out of the box. However, once they settle in they have wonderful clarity, especially in the mid and higher ranges. The A5 doesn't have a sub-woofer, therefore relative to other speakers like the Zeppelin Air (which does) or the Bose Soundlink Air (which doesn't but is quite bass-heavy anyway) they are slightly lacking in the bass frequency range particularly at lower volumes. However, at a higher volume the bass is more prominent and can be increased further by placing the speaker close to a boundary wall or in the corner of a room (about 2 inches from a wall seems to work best). I have tried many Airplay speakers and to be frank they all drop network connections at some point. The A5 is about similar to the Bose Soundlink Air in this regard. I now use my A5 connected to the network by LAN cable and it hasn't dropped off the network in the last 3 months. If you are able to play this speaker at moderate or high volumes you will be get the best opportunity to experience the full clarity of it's soundscape!

    Good sound - dreadful setup

    • Written by from Lewes

I purchased an A5 speaker 2.5 months back and since that time it has been nothing short of a painful experience trying to connect it our wireless network, and when it is connected it keeps dropping out. Originally I thought it was just our network, but since moving into our new office which has super fast fiber I realise its the fault of the speaker. I contacted the store I purchased it for (Apple, Churchill Square, Brighton) and the sales person said they had the same speaker and experienced the same issue. I have spent countless times trying to connect it, resetting, etc. and to be quite honest I have given up with it. I've been using computers for 25 years now, so am no technophobe when it comes to these things. I'm also so disappointed, seeing as its my fist B&W product. Apart from the setup issue, the speaker does have a good sound for its size. However, if you're looking for an amazing sound, I'd recommend the B&O A8.

    Pretty darned good!

    • Written by from Ashbourne

Very impressed. Astonishing sound quality from a little box. Maybe the A7 is better, but the A5 is pretty darned good. Doubt I could appreciate the difference.

Unlike some reviewers I found Airplay easy to set up. Using iPad Air and ios 7.1 with the B&W app through a BT Homehub 3 router it worked first time.

Not cheap, but worth the money.

    Superbly musical

    • Written by from London

I already own a zeppelin air, which is fantastic, even if care needs to be taken to tame it's sometimes unruly bass. I needed to replace my ageing separates system in the bedroom (4 x 4m) with something more stylish and 'wife friendly'. I didn't honestly expect too much from a product this compact, but I have to say, it's stunningly good, better than the zeppelin on balance. The sound is incredibly transparent, vocals sparkle, and treble is perfectly articulated, whilst bass is tight, fast and rythmic, and surprisingly abundant given the small size (obviously nowhere near the zeppelin in quantity). It may not be as warm as the usual b&w products and it's all the better for it since it's so musical.

    Super impressed!

    Excellent speaker

    • Written by from Lancaster

We have both a Zeppelin air and a B&W A5. Initially there was problems setting up the Zeppelin but since B&W have upgraded the app the A5 connected instantly. We have had no problems with loss of sound or connectivity issues. The Zeppelin is perfect in the lounge and the A5 in the kitchen. We run them independently from iPads or both together from a desk top situated 2 floors up in a converted loft. We have no need for router boosters and the desk top is linked to a BT router through a £12 dongle. They give perfect sound for our needs and I would recommend them to anybody.

Ignore negative reviews. Never mind the out of date WiFi. They work and are just stunning. For those with WiFi problems, blame your network not these speakers. Good volume and frequency response.

Amazing Audio, Superb Build Quality, Highly Recommended A+

    • Written by from Tunbridge Wells

I had done extensive research on a number of Airplay speakers from Sonos, Bose, B&W and others and ended up deciding on a Bowers & Wilkins A5 and an A7.

After an initial and very easy setup on my iPhone I had a little trouble in picking the A7 up through wifi (the A5 was fine). After searching on the internet I discovered problems with Airplay devices can occur due to the router settings (so if you have problems check if your router is "n" and "g" compatible and also firewall settings etc), however once that was solved I was able to be fully blown away by the audio quality of these devices.

I had already heard them in a shop but once they had the closer acoustics of my rooms at home they sounded even better! I used to have Bose Soundocks and in all honesty these eat those for breakfast!

The build quality is excellent as is the audio quality. Personally I really like the design - they look inconspicuous yet stylish.

The balance of bass, middle and treble is perfect. Very deep bass (especially on the A7) pounds the airways with crystal clear trebles and everything in between. To say I am impressed is an understatement and considering the size of these devices I think B&W should be commended on the quality they provide.

The A5 and A7 are not cheap but I believe they are well worth the money. My only negative other than the price is that there is no instruction manual included, however they can be downloaded in pdf format from their website.

If you are looking for some serious audio equipment for your iOS device or to play from your PC/Mac, look no further…

    Great with reservations

    • Written by from Southampton

I've had one of the original Zep speakers for 4ish years. From the first time I heard Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" through it, I fell in love. I wanted to hate it: surely nothing can look ~and~ sound that sexy. Sure does!

I wanted a second system so I wasn't carrying the Zep around wherever I went. B&W know how to take care of their customers (unlike the Apple of late) and I love their understated design. I trialled the A7 for a couple of weeks. It sounded great - bass a bit too unwieldy for my taste but pretty faultless. But was a bit too bulky and not so easy to move around. I've had the A5 for a week of serious testing. Through AirPlay and 3.5 mm jack, it sounds clear, crisp and even. Not got quite the bass response or stereo separation as the Zep but seems to me to do better stereo separation than the A7. Very easy to move about, the bass exhaust at the back proving a helpful finger hold! The evenness weakens at high volumes, loosing bass and top treble... but I didn't want it to run flat out at 80 watts! Everything balanced, this is near perfect for what I wanted: easier portability than the Zep even if not quite such robust, deep bass esp at high volumes.

My two main issues: (1) it really does need a string wifi signal to work seamlessly. If a bit out of range, it struggles. Potential solutions include connecting up to router using Ethernet cable or getting a second router (eg airport express). (2) there is audible hiss even at lowest volume when on. This is a problem when listening to some music with quiet or silent passages and with some movies. Not sure if this is going to kill it for me. I should say that it isn't as bad as some other common active speakers out there I've listened too and at least it's a hiss rather than a buzz. So, I'm giving it another few days.

In short, it isn't the Zep original, but its great for what it is.

    Awesome sound, Awful airplay performance

    • Written by from chertsey

Great sound however we found the signal to drop out far to frequently to make listening a pleasure. We tried all sorts with our network, even having the speaker close to the router. Unfortunately had to give up after a week for a refund after exhausting all set up possibilities.

    Perfect setup and sound

    • Written by from Oxford

Used their app to set it up from my ipad. From downloading the app to having the system operational took about five minutes. Sound quality is simply amazing. Extremely easy to use and control from computer, ipad and iphone. Have put the remote control away in a drawer - can't think of circumstances in which I'd use it.

    Remote volume not working

    • Written by from Buckden

I purchased a Bowers & Wilkins A5 on Saturday 9th February. I downloaded iTunes to my iPad Retina. I could not get the remote control to adjust the volume. I spoke to B&W and they suggested that the unit was faulty and I should get an exchange. I got an exchange yesterday and set it up. The remote volume is still not operating and the only way I can adjust the volume is via the iPad slider. Even the + & - switch on the side of the A5 will not adjust the sound. I am obviously doing something wrong as two untis from B&W could not be faulty. Has anyone else experienced this. I did see a blog suggesting that the only way iTunes volume can be adjusted is on the iPad which seems totally wrong. Please help.

    Simply Magnificent

    • Written by from Milford

A magnificent product, tremendous piece of industrial design and performance. Musical excellence, coupled with cutting edge technology, create an incredibly compelling product.

    Minimalist, classy, expensive.

    //Build Quality
Absolutely what you would expect from Bowers & Wilkins - top notch. From the nautilus tweeters, to the class D amplifiers powering each driver, this speaker oozes quality.

Sublime! Detailed throughout the range, well balanced, and delivering the vinyl-esq warmth that is the B&W trademark. The soundstage produced from one box is incredible. The DAC upscales lossy MP3s to deliver a depth that only the most discerning of audiophiles will be pick holes in. In a word, incredible.

Flawless, delivering lossless streams from iPad, iPhone and iMac without issue. One cautionary note, lossless streams require a strong WiFi connection to prevent break in streams from packet loss.

A doddle, the app from B&W is simple and effective.

    //A7 or A5?
I have both the A7 and the A5, so can make a real life comparison between the two. The A7 provides a more dynamic range from the seperate sub-woofer, offering greater detail in the low to mid range. The A5 therefore has a 'fresher' feel, with greater reliance on mid range. However, both are incredible, and in a blind test the average consumer would be hard pushed to notice the difference. If you have the money, get the A7, however if you get the A5 you will be more than happy.

This speaker will make you love with music again. Get one without hesitation.

    Even better than I expected!

    • Written by from Chippenham

Ridiculously easy to setup and use. I can now play any audio from my iPad, iPhone and laptop. The sound is really crisp and clear. It looks gorgeous and is so compact that it fits perfectly in the only space I could put a speaker. It is expensive but you get great quality for your money. My only complaint would be that I can't unleash its full volume without annoying my neighbours!

Good Airplay Speaker System set up a bit challenging

    • Written by from Shepton Mallet

I bought one of these today and after 3 hours of fiddling around have got it working fine and it sounds very good in our kitchen. The set up app is ok but it would have been helpful to have some narrative on what to expect at each stage of the procedure.
You have to find your way around the setup procedure and I had to reset it several times before I finally got it to work.
It is elegant neat and has a very reasonable sound for its size

    Superb speaker

    • Written by from Barnsley

The set up of this speaker was simplicity itself using the B&W app. I was up and running in a matter of minutes and streaming music from my iPod. Using the remote app I had downloaded I was just as easily streaming music from the entire library on my Mac.
The sound quality from the speaker itself is tremendous from such a compact cabinet. Very clear, solid bass with no discernible distortion even at high volume. The build quality is very impressive and I particularly like the understated and discrete appearance
The extra long mains lead is very useful when finding a suitable position within the room.
I would not hesitate to recommend this speaker to anyone wanting to get the best from the excellent Airplay system.
