Useful case, looks good but weak around the rear facing camera

I've had this case for probably 18 months now (or rather, I've had _these_ cases). Thankfully there's a 12 month warranty on the case because if, like me, you need to take the phone out of the case to fit it on a charging dock, or put it in a different case (for fitting on a bicycle for example) you'll find the corner of the case near the rear camera is weak. The plastic frame the holds the phone and the leather case become detached. I got mine replaced under warranty but the replacement has already started to go after 6 months or so.

I notice that the versions of the case for the 6/6 Plus have a different design around the rear facing camera, so Twelve South are presumably aware of the issue.

Good for everything but making calls

This is my second book book case. I had one for my iphone 4 and it was great - apart from the photo taking problem everyone talked about. However this one is fine for taking photos but no one can hear me when I make calls. I can't work out why this is and am very intrigued that the various magazine reviews do not comment on this. Did none of them try to use the case for what it is intended for - a telephone?? I have had the case for 5 months so far and it is a consistent problem so I am about to abandon the case and get another. I cannot work out how to hold or use the phone in the case to alleviate the problem.

    Excellent product

This wallet case has been perfect for me. I can carry iPhone, cards and folding money all in one unit and it fits snugly in rear jeans pocket. I have dropped the case several times on hard flooring and sustained no damage to my iPhone which is a great feature. Would also recommend this company's Hi-rise stand as it charges and displays phone even with the case attached.
Although a little pricey I have tried quite a few cheaper cases but none come close to receiving the favourable comments this one receives from friends and family.

    Not for making Phonecalls

You cannot make phonecalls with the case on because nobody hears you. It totally blocks the mic or something. I have had it for 3 months and it's starting to break from the corners and the color of the "leather" has come off.

    Great Product. Outstanding Customer Service!

This is my very first review that I'm writing!

I've had my case for about 9 months now and I'm sad to say that I'm experiencing the same problem as others have mentioned here. On the right top corner near the camera hole, the stitching that joins the plastic part together is un done. I can't really say if this is down to normal wear & tear but paying £49+ you shouldn't really be facing this issue.

However, I must say that Twelve South Customer Support is amazing!! No hassel what so ever. I contacted them via e-mail regarding the defect in my case. I wasn't expecting a reply on the same day let alone in 30mins. They apologised for my inconvenience & offered to put it right. I supplied them with my receipt and got a confirmation within 10mins that my replacement is on its way with DHL. I have to say that I was absolutely surprised and very pleased with the way they handled my complaint. 40 mins from the time I reported to receiving confirmation of replacement. AMAZING!!!!

Overall this case is absolutely stunning, very unique, ID window is great feature, carries the most essential cards and most importantly, it does protect my phone! I would recommend this case to anyone regardless of the issue I've had as I'm rest assured that if anything goes wrong with it, Twelve South will put it right.

    Book Case Iphone 5 Cover

Loved this case, liking the old book style of the case. Another family member wants to buy one now after seeing mine.

I wanted to like this so much..

But sadly after two from the Apple shop and a replacement direct from Twelve South all have failed with the same results.

Firstly the plastic coating around the phone 'holder' rubs away, then the rest of the coating peels off. The corners that form the shape of the wallet then break away, meaning that the leather cover them loosens and comes away. The final straw was when on holiday - the Canary islands c28C - the adhesive holding the cover together started to melt and the phone came away from the wallet whilst still in it's holder.

Sadly the most disappointing case I have yet owned, but I will say I emailed the guys at Twelve South who were lovely and replaced the second one FoC all the way from their offices in America - now that is customer service!!

Poor quality. Nowhere near as good as the 4s version.

I personally loved the 4s bookbook. I much preferred the ability to remove my phone when I wanted it rather than having it stay in the case permanently.
The plastic clip approach in the 5 case is not a good idea. Firstly it is coated in some kind of leather, but that didn't last long before it started peeling off.
The leather on the outside also started showing wear very quickly. This is fine if you like the "aged look" but it doesn't bode well for the life span.
It has plenty of space for cards and cash, but the added length of the 5 makes this quite a large bukly case.
My advice, get the toffee wallet cases instead.

Not the same quality as the 4s BookBook Case

this is now my 3rd replacement of this case the first one the case kept coming out of the corners, the second one the leather was coming un stitched... will have to see what the 3rd one brings when it arrives... not a patch on the 4s case and I prefered the design of that case as well..
Not worth £50 anymore, I had my 4s case for 18 months with no issues...
    Come on 12south ...

    Poor Quality

Love the idea of this case. Looks great, very convenient for most used cards.
Unfortunately, it started falling apart & ripping in a month. The area around the camera is wrecked & the corners are all very worn.

Fantastic customer support for an excellent product

I bought this case 7 months ago and I was very happy with it but gradually, through normal day to day use the spine became worn and as others have noted, the top right hand corner near the plastic stitching weakened and started to curl away. I emailed customer service expressing my disappointment that an expensive good quality product would show signs f wear and tear so soon. They apologised and sent a free replacement via DHL! Their communication was excellent and they paid all shipment costs and did not even ask me to send the faulty case back to them! I must say I am very pleased with them!

    Great idea but flawed execution

I had the 4S case and so held out for the new case when I got my 5. After a long wait, they finally released this and I bought it pretty soon after.

At first, I was pretty happy. The case looks good, holds an extra card over the 4S case and even lets you use the camera. However, this comes at a price. The previous case was all leather and so it was able to bend and mould itself to the phone as time went by. This one is built around a plastic shell to hold the phone and make an aperture for the camera. The downside of this is that there's now an additional sharp edge which, after a relatively short time of normal use, resulted in the leather and the plastic separating.

Add to this that the extra card increases the bulk of the wallet part of the case meaning that things start to get pretty crowded if you try to take even a relatively modest amount of banknotes (#firstworldproblem, I know)

I still use this as my daily wallet / phone case as I've yet to see anything better out there but I'd have rather had my 4S wallet still and not had a camera aperture than compromise the long term wear and tear of the wallet.

    Absolutely superb case

Beautifully made. It feels great in the hand. The iPhone 5 fits perfectly and securely. Not suffered any of the sound volume problems people have spoken of. The leather in the spine is a little stiff to start with, which stops it closing fully at first, but it softens up nicely after only a day or twos use. I found that leaving it face down helped to train the leather into the correct closed position. This is simply the best case I've had for any of my mobile phones over the years.

As others have noted, poor quality. I've had mine for less than three months and some stitching has started to fail and finish over the plastic surround that hold the phone has worn away exposing the plastic.

The back side, near the cut-out for the camera has deformed too. Not what I expected for this price.

The maintenance/cleaning blub you get with the case says the manufacture likes the worn look and that they think it looks better that way. To a point I could agree but would you really expect them to engineer in wear points that I and others have noticed?

This is the first Twelve South case I have bought. And the last. Not for my phone my iPads or my MacBook.

I had been planning on buying their BookArc stand and although it has some great reviews - so does this case (and I see the good case reviews are from new owners). So I'll probably look elsewhere for a stand too.

I really do hope this review does two things - firstly, make people think twice before buying this case and secondly, demonstrates the damage a poor product can have on future sales across a brand's range.

Poor quality, cheap build & plasticky finish – not a patch on the 4S case

Like others here, I was a proud owner of the iPhone 4S BookBook case, which is a piece of design genius.

In stark contrast, the iPhone 5 case is a case study in poor design. The lessons learned from the iPhone 4S case seem to have been completely thrown out and this case is made entirely differently — and of significantly poorer quality materials. The leather has a very plasticky finish, unlike the lovely natural leather used in the 4S case, which aged beautifully. Skimping on the materials in this case has resulted in the leather along the right hand edge of the back cover parting from the case — the 'hem' stitching clearly is along the very edge of the leather, meaning it does not hold it effectively.

The plastic 'frame' in which the phone must be 'clipped' (and scratched) is covered in a thin synthetic (plastic) suede. With a mere 6 months of careful use, this has rubbed off in several places, leaving ragged edges and exposed black plastic.

TwelveSouth have managed to take one of the best iPhone case designs and completely ruin it — one imagines to achieve reduced costs and more profit. If you're looking for an example of how not to design an iPhone case, then this is it. I would much rather slide the phone up to take a photo (as in the 4S case) rather than have the ugly plastic frame elements. All that was needed was the exact same case as the 4S one, but a few centimetres taller. Instead we end up the most disappointing and overpriced iPhone accessory I have yet to purchase.

I cannot recommend strongly enough that you avoid this case. Hopefully, Twelve South will see sense and the classic BookBook design will be restored. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

    Good while it lasted

Had mine for a month and it protected my iPhone 5 well.

However, the back corner closest to the camera hole appears to be a weak point and the leather has started to curl round the phone enclosure, pulling the leather away from the camera hole. The leather isn't strengthened in those corners in the same way as the others.

Build quality just not the same as their other products. Shame.

    Fallen in love

I've only had this for a day, but I love it already.

I do a lot of reading on the iPhone - with this case, I hold the case open like a book in one hand. I can see that it's going to replace my bulging wallet most of the time, too. That means one less thing to lose. It's a charming case visually. It's easy to take out and put in when I want to use a naked iPhone.

I highly recommend it - on one day's use, at least.

Not as good quality as should be

I've had this cover for about four weeks and have noticed that there is about 1cm of the covering on the plastic that the phone clips into is coming away. Not good when you are paying nearly £50 for the cover, I'm not sure if apple will replace it but will be taking it with me next time I'm at the apple store to see.

Weakest of the Twelve South bunch!

After buying the BookBook cover for the 4/4S and loving it I thought my iPhone 5 needed the same high quality treatment and protection, however if you are looking for something that will not scratch the side and edge of your shiny new iPhone 5, keep looking. The cheap looking plastic that you have to snap your phone into by 'pushing down firmly' scratched the bezel of my phone, not happy! The plastic looks out of place especially around the camera hole which is not in keeping with Twelve South's other products. With the slightly more fragile nature of the 5's finish I thought nothing will do but a BookBook case, this was based on the high quality finish of all their other products. I have not got a bad word to say on their MacBook Pro, iPad or 4/4S cover, all of which have proved durable and valuable but I do feel they have really let the side down with the iPhone 5 cover.

If you do buy this cover please be extremely careful when putting in and taking out your phone.

If anybody from Twelve South reads this, please do not use plastic in future BookBook designs!

    It's now 'the norm'

Firstly if you have an Iphone 5 you must have a case of some description.

Why this case? Well some people won't ever want to combine their wallet and phone so this is not the case for you.

But if you are looking for less clutter in your life this this is the one for you. You don't need to carry round 19 debit, credit and store cards all at once (and if you do then you shouldn't be spending your money on iphones and £50 cases) This case is for the professional who wants to reduce clutter and look smart whilst also achieving the practical benefit of protecting their phone.

Previously every time I left my house/office/other location I had to do the man dance....wallet, phone, keys. And I would physically have to locate them on my body. Now I only have to find 2 of those things - so by my maths this case has improved my life by 33% !!
