Nice little drive but beware of Firewire support lacking on OS

    • Written by from London

Great drive, nicely made and you cannot fault G-Tech for the product quality, design, looks and performance.

It is remarkably compact and comes with a handy carry pouch (although I suspect most users will be leaving this drive permanently connected) and the two cables you may need, Firewire and USB 3.0.

The only downside is the very bright white LED which is permanently on, even when the unit powers-down when connected using USB 3.0.

The BIG flaw however is not of G-Tech's making but Apple. It seems to be that under Mavericks and currently releases of Mac OS that Firewire support is being downgraded. So if you have an old pre USB 3.0 or pre-thunderbolt machine where you want to use Firewire over USB, then the unit will be severely compromised. Power to the unit is permanently on and there is no power-down handshaking with Firewire. Unfortunately the G-Tech drive is simply not designed to be left on 24/7 and the recommendation from their tech support is therefore that you physically disconnect the drive daily (apparently it does spin down after 15 minutes of inactivity but I have discovered this is not always the case). If you search a number of BBs it appears that Apple may be trying to phase out Firewire support and providing reasons to avoid using Firewire connectivity would be one way of doing this.

So my recommendation is: great drive if you don't use the Firewire cables but stick to using USB 3.0 (and if so, there are perhaps alternative drives out there, even by G-Tech, you should be using)

    Time Machine

    • Written by from Sheffield

Bought one to use with Time Machine to back up both a Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro. Whilst the capacity is limited, its enough for a few back ups of each in case anything should go wrong.

I was amazed how simple it is to use. Connect it to the Mac and it takes power via USB or Firewire cable so no external supply needed.
The drive comes ready formatted in the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" format so was detected and available to use as soon as it was plugged into the Mac and switched on.

The MacBook Pro automatically opened the Time Machine set up when it detected the drive connected via USB, and all you have to do is say that you want to use it and decide whether to encrypt the back ups. The Mac then gets going with the first back up and schedules hourly backups to follow. If you don't want the hourly backups simply eject the drive once the first back up is complete and reconnect when you next want to use it. Once the drive isn't connected the Mac doesn't complain that its not there so you can control when its available and back ups are running.

I've used it with both USB3 and Firewire connections and USB3 is noticeably faster, but its nice to have the flexibility of connections as Mac Mini ports are limited without hooking up an external USB hub.

    Quiet and fast

Very nice looking complementing Apple's styling; it is also quiet and fast. In addition it did not need any setting up, it just worked out of the box.

Even better if It had the optional mains power transformer included — especially for home or office use.

The power light is bright but as I use my external drives with the plugs facing towards me it is not a problem and the flashing on the wall lets me know it is working.

Only years will tell if this is as durable as I suspect, but so far I am very satisfied and considering buying another.

    Great little drive

Really smart and great little drive - fast and quiet and yes the on white light is bright but not too distracting.
I love the way my MacBook just took to it straight away - mainly use this for audio files for Logic Pro and everything
seems a lot happier! I was going to go for the 2TB G Drive for an extra £5 (which does sound better value for money)
    - but when I read the reviews about it being noisy, I am glad I went for the mini!!

    Fantastic fast portable drive

    • Written by from Leatherhead

I bought this drive to hold all my media when editing with Final Cut Pro X. It's beautifully designed, very quiet, and very fast (I have copied files to it via USB 3.0 at around 128 MB/second).

It can play back full quality optimised 1080p 50p video with no glitches whatsoever. However, I have not done any multicam editing in FCPX yet, so I can't comment on how it would perform in that situation.

I liked the drive so much, a week later I bought a second which now holds a backup of all my Final Cut Pro X media!

    - Small form factor
    - Very quiet
    - Very fast
    - Good range of ports (one USB 2 / 3, two FireWire 800)
    - All cables come in the box
    - Comes with a leather carrying case which has room for both the drive and one interface cable

    - No A/C adaptor in the box if you ever wanted to use it attached to a non-powered USB hub ... although how many people would actually have that problem these days?
    - The leather case is rather thin and flimsy, the complete opposite of the drive itself! A little more thought could have made the case a much more pleasurable thing to use ...

    Overall a highly recommendable drive.
