Despite my taking good care of the charger, the wire has frayed and the plastic coating has broken near the magnetic connector.

Poor quality compared to the MacBook

    • Written by from Bradford-on-Avon

I received this charger with my macbook just over a year ago, despite care and attention not to wind the cable tightly both ends have split and frayed and the charger needs replacing. Surprisingly poor quality.

    Dangerous

    • Written by from potters bar

The connection to the power pack is flimsy considering that this is for a portable device. Ours just burnt the plastic wire coating. I think it was luck that I could smell the plastic burning so I could turn the power off before anything serious happened.

Unbelievable really to think that this can pass Apples Quality Control.

Second PSU in as many years

    • Written by from COVENTRY

Another unhappy customer with this one, I'm afraid. This time I made sure not to wrap or bend the thin wire, especially near the base unit, but still, it broke. What I noticed is that the heat from the unit softens the plastic on the thin end. This bulks up and eventually becomes brittle, then cracks open, exposing the wire and ultimately breaking it.

I hope Apple can address this problem. I'm quite surprised that they celebrate this design so positively. The "feet" are pointless, and I've never understood why they changed the original mag safe connector, which was much better. This unit could do with a complete design overhaul.

Breaks after 18months - VERY DISAPPOINTED

    • Written by from Chelmsford

Very disappointed with the power adapter blowing fuses after 18 months. After spending a lot of money on a MBP Retina (and treating it as such) the fuse randomly blew after being connected for ½ hour. Replaced the fuse - blew again, and now forced to buy another adapter at £65. This isn't acceptable Apple!

Being forced to buy third charger in two years

    • Written by from Southampton

Beyond ridiculous. I thought I was doing something wrong but the huge number of abject reviews and exactly similar issues don't lie. Has there been any product that is as bad yet priced so high that it is robbery at daylight. And that to on loyal paying customers. Seeing how long this problem has lasted and how it seems to be conveniently ignored by blaming the users for misuse/lack of care. And since there is no real alternative to it on the market, we are all forced to submit to this madness.

    So disappointed.

    • Written by from Pieksämäki

I paid more than 2000 euros for my Macbook Pro Retina 15'', and I get this lousy, idiotic design. It gets pulled off more than 20 times a day and now, after 1,5 years of use it's completely useless and Apple Inc. would like me to pay nearly 90 euros for a new charger. I was saving money in the first place to buy "the best" piece of machinery there is and now I'm stuck with this... I'm honestly really really annoyed and disappointed and feel cheated. The original Magsafe was clever and useful, working and durable. And what is this Magsafe 2? It's a piece of s--t to be honest.

I thought I'd get quality for my money, but apparently I was just an idiot.

And I can't even rate this product honestly; I'd wish to give 0/5, 'cause it's not WORTHY of even one star. But since they've made it impossible... I have to give it one out of five.

    A very big step backwards

    • Written by from east sussex

Magsafe is a great idea but Apple have failed to improve the design with Magsafe 2. The magnetic connection is so weak a breeze will almost disconnect it. This leads to charge failures and extra use of the battery and much frustration. Sometimes when using the laptop it is almost impossible to maintain a constant connection.

You Would Think That MagSafe 2 Would be Better MagSafe 1

    • Written by from Phoenix

Seriously, how can Apple go from a rather clever power adapter design that worked great to something that is nothing short of annoying and not be aware of it? My previous MagSafe adapters worked flawlessly, never disconnecting unless I tripped on the cable laying on the floor. The 'improved' MagSafe 2 version falls out constantly which is annoying at best, but becomes extremely frustrating when connected to an external monitor and as it drops out randomly throughout the day, cutting the AC power to my MacBook Pro, the connection to the monitor is lost and then everything goes dark. Sometimes this just requires reconnecting the power adapter, but other times it puts the laptop into some sort of deep sleep mode that is a pain to wake up from.

All told, you're much better off getting a MagSafe 1 to MagSafe 2 adapter that actually has some decent magnetic power to it and stays in place as one might expect it to.

Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter

    • Written by from Winchelsea

I am astonished at the poor quality of this product. The magnetic attachment is virtually useless, falling out with the slighted movement and now the whole thing has decided to stop working - and I have only been using the computer for a few months. Looking at the website, Apple post many reviews saying how poor this product is, yet still wish to charge £65 for a replacement. Unbelievable! I am rating this with one star because the system will not allow me to allocate zero stars.

Poor show. Apple you are stealing from your customers.

    • Written by from Brighton

I wish there was a negative star rating for this product. This product is dreadful, but I find myself having to buy the second power adaptor since I purchase my mac book pro (making it three since purchase that have broken all in the same place). I simply do not have an alternative and I am frankly angry and disappointed at apple for not addressing this design issue.

80 1 star ratings Apple (mine will make it 81). How many people do you need to tell you that your product is pants?! As far as I am concerned you have stolen £130 for me. As a faithful apple user I feel thoroughly let down and ignored.

    • Written by from Reading

This product is incredibly poor quality. I am now on my third replacement. Having just opened the box and plugged this third item in for 10 minutes it is too hot to touch. I am really worried that it may cause a fire.

But what do I do? this is the official Apple item and I need to be able to use my Mac Book for work. Apple have me over a barrel!

    Sorry excuse for a charger.

    • Written by from Kendal

I purchased my Macbook Pro 15" Retina display 13 months ago with AppleCare for 1 year. My EXTREMELY well looked after charger broke with no signs of wear and tear after it worked 10 minutes previously. I now have to pay £65 to replace it so I can complete work which is crucial due to the nature of my job.. After spending around £2500 on the laptop, I would have appreciated a charger which reflected the price I paid. Apple is undoubtably the best in my opinion, but this charger has drastically slowed down the process of my work due to having to borrow chargers. Seriously unimpressed with the cost of a replacement after only 13 months of the purchase of my Macbook especially if I'm likely to have to do this every year so I can make the use of my laptop. Gotta rush, I only have 3%...

    Cable insulation is perishing useless

    • Written by from London

I've been using MacBooks for years and would expect normal wear and tear, but the rubber insulation on the MagSafe end of the cable perishes far too quickly.

I treat mine with a great deal of care, but now my second power adaptor in 18 months has perished. It's simply not good enough to put such a consistently repeated fault down to improper care by the user.

If only the MagSafe end unclipped like the mains end does, it would be easy to swap them over for a new one without having to replace the whole adaptor unit, which continues to work fine.

The power adaptor itself works well, and the Macbook is fabulous - but please can we have better quality - or at least cheaply replaceable - cables?

    • Written by from Reddditch

I've gone through 2 of these in less than two years, the cable just falls apart either where it joins the mac or where it joins the 'brick' bit. You would have though apple would have made a charger that actually lasts a decent amount of time considering their top of line macbook is £2500+
