A useful but expensive strip of lights

    • Written by from Calgary

I bought this to add to my other hue lights. An interesting difference: The hue lights always turn on standard white and then you have to change the colour. The lightstrip always turns on to the colour it was last time it turned off. You also can't group the lightstrip in the same way within the hue app. I installed this as under counter lighting and added it to my home automation system so the lights turn to a warm yellow when I enter the kitchen. Love it!

Picks up where the lightbulbs left off

    • Written by from San Francisco

I recently received my light strips and I'm very happy with the quality and characteristics of this light. I'm familiar with LED strips as I've used others for under cabinet lighting. The qualities of the light are very similar to what I've previously experienced with this light type.

As for the color of the strips, nice saturation and the like. If you like the bulbs, you'll like the light strips.

    Neat product

    • Written by from New Orleans

I used them as under cabinet lighting in my kitchen. Wish the white light was a little brighter, but having the ability to change color is awesome.

    Horrible design

    • Written by from Lawrenceville

The lights function like you would expect, but the design is just awful. Not only is there a massive plug with about 6 feet or cord, there is also a power brick. There really is no good way to hide these. The pictures on the actual box are very deceiving b.c it is impossible to hide the wiring. I love all of the other hue products, but this is just silly.

    Just OK

    • Written by from Troy

I bought one of these hoping to use it for task lighting in my kitchen.

Pros: Super easy set up, "rubber" enclosed lights should be easy to clean and not affected by splashes or spills along its lighted length.

Cons: These are just not bright enough to act as task lighting for a kitchen counter. They also don't have great color fidelity compared to what you're trying to pick in the Hue app, but this might just be that the Hue app is fiddly. However I'm consistently surprised at the greenishness of the lights when I've picked a yellowish color in the app.
It is also mildly annoying that the preset scenes don't activate these lights. Just as others mention. But no one seems to mention that you can work around this by creating a picture based scene that duplicates the presets and does include the lightstrip.

My ultimate verdict is these are cool, and I'm keeping them, but I've found another use where they will work as under shelving accent lights. If I was trying to chop onions by their light, I would lose a finger sooner or later.

Flexibility is limited and the 3M tape is so so

    • Written by from San Antonio

I purchased the lights as an under the cabinet feature. Instead of wrapping the lighting on the inside ledge, I attempted to install on the bottom of the cabinet so you could also see the LED's. When it came to wrapping around a corner, the flex tape was pretty stiff and so it forced me to re-install it on the inside of the edge a few days later.

The 3M tape isn't that great. One of the other reasons I had to re-install was due to the light strips falling off the cabinet. Good thing double sided 3M tape is sold virtually everywhere.

I would advise buying additional 3M tape to secure the extra cord.

As a product improvement, I would suggest making the cut points magnetic. That way you could possibly re-use the remaining pieces else where in the future instead of having to throw it away. Since electricity is passed through the strips, it could be electro magnetic for feasibility.

Great addition to Hue Starter Set

    • Written by from San Jose

I recently added more LightStrips to our Hue environment. These are my favorite addition for creating the perfect lighting mood. Note that there are more saturated colors with the LightStrips, (e.g., deeper greens), at the expense of white light ranges. In particular, you can set the Hue/Saturation, but not directly set color temperature. This is why the Light Recipes from the default app won't let you add LightStrips or Bloom lights.

You can control every possible attribute of these Light Strips by using the "Hue Lights" app. The calibration of colors has more variance with LightStrips, so putting two side by side can sometimes cause subtle color mismatches. This can be corrected by creating a scene with the "Hue Lights" app and manually adjusting one of the Light Strips to match the color of the other (e.g., Light Strip #1 has a Hue/Saturation value of 50000/254 while Light Strip #2 has a Hue/Saturation of 49852/250).

    Needs Work

    • Written by from Little Rock

The strip works well with the Hue system, but there are a few basic improvements that would increase satisfaction for future customers. First, the strip doesn't do corners well, so I would somehow incorporate 'joints' of some kind into areas of the strip. Second, once you peel off the backing to reveal the tape for adherence, you cannot re-stick the product to any other surface. It loses its stickiness. What Philips should have done was used velcro instead of sticky tape. If they had put the male side of the velcro on the light strip, you could always purchase female velcro from any craft store. Then you'd be able to try the strip out in more than one location. I use the strip along the underside edge of my rectangular, solid wood coffee table so the lights reflect onto my white rug below. After a couple of days, the strip is starting to become loose and sag. Hopefully they'll fix this. I would definitely reconsider buying more in the future if this improvement was made.

Neat, but.... DO NOT MATCH HUE BULBS.

    • Written by from NEW YORK

I love my hue's. My entire house is hue, so i bought a few of these assuming they would be the same. They aren't; they don't match the hue light bulbs. Even greater an annoyance, they don't match each other. While I love the hue's, I returned the light strips.

    Ok product. has some limitation

    • Written by from London

overall this product is okay. makes a nice show off at parties tho... i had one heck of a time getting it out of the package... it wouldnt come out without ripping it. had to take it back 3 times. its really hard to get them to go darker colours like the hue light bulbs. and if using scenes in the app it wont turn them on too.

Would love to have shorter lengths

    • Written by from Toronto

These are quite expensive and although you can cut them down to a shorter length, the part you've cut off doesn't work. It would be great if you could buy these in shorter lengths. Even one meter as opposed to two.

The label is very misleading. They are not "strips" it is a single strip.

    • Written by from Austin

I was excited because the advertising and packaging says "strips". But in fact it is only a single, very expensive strip and each strip that you buy has a separate wall plug in. It seems to be deliberately misleading as well - when the box uses the plural, you expect more than one. You don't see a laptop box that says "laptops". So far, I can't get them to work with the base. Thus far, not really impressed. But it sure SOUNDED fantastic!

    Delivers as promised

    • Written by from Chicago

I read the reviews before purchasing two of these light strips. The reviews helped me better understand their functions and it set my expectations properly. I LOVE these strips. I lined my fireplace with them adding to existing Hue lights in my living & dining rooms. The strips have an adhesive that actually sticks with no issues on painted drywall. I plan on buying two more strips for my kitchen cabinets next.
