Twelve South BackPack 3 Adjustable Shelf

  • Overview

The Twelve South BackPack 3 is a sleek, sturdy shelf designed exclusively for your iMac or Apple Display. This slice of steel makes a perfect perch for hard drives, USB peripherals, or action figures. Included vertical support pegs safely and securely prop up vertical-oriented drives, Time Capsule, or even a MacBook Air. BackPack hangs on the back or front of your Mac using two clips and gravity. Built-in cable management rails hold your power cords in place for grab and go convenience.

The shelf can support devices up to 3.5 pounds. Vertical support pegs are coated in soft silicone to prevent scratches or marks on your device. The plastic mounting clips do not have any screws that come in contact with your Mac. Because it's height adjustable, you can hang two BackPacks on one Mac.

I have not moved it about since installation and it has proven very unobtrusive and useful in keeping my desk organized in a very small space. I have used it to store a weather station monitor and hub for a peripheral device without problems. If you feel it is expensive, it is very worth the outlay as you will get years out of it, it can be taken to a future Mac and it will help with your aesthetic.

They have done a great job holding iPhones and iPods, AirPort Express, Apple software on discs, even just wrapping some earbuds around them or hanging headphones off. Now that I plan to buy a new iMac, I will definitely buy the BackPack 3 for it, especially if it can hold up to a MacBook Air, so I can put heavier things on it. Unless, of course, the BackPack 4 with supporting capability for a Retina MacBook Pro comes out when I get the iMac! 

This small I bought this BackPack Shelf many months ago to store my external hard drive in back of my iMac Desktop. I wanted it off my desk and out of the way. This small shelf does what it supposed to do and blends in very well with Apple's silver metallic finish. This practical shelf can also be mounted in front under the monitor. You can add as much as two shelves; one in the back and one in the front. The shelves are adjustable. Good quality and finish. A little bit pricey but reasonable.

      Great for livestream!!

I had problems playing my livestream games and looking back and forth at my computer monitors looking at the game I was playing and then looking at the other mo I had problems playing my livestream games and looking back and forth at my computer monitors looking at the game I was playing and then looking at the other monitor reading and replying to my live comments. So I decided to buy this and install it in front of my Thunderbolt Display and put my iPod touch 5th gen on it and now I can have my minecraft game and my comments all in front of me instead of looking back and forth at both my Thunderbolt Displays. I never have to worry about my iPod dying because I can just plug it in to the back of the monitor!

You can do the same with a Mac Mini, too. Great quality and perfect color/texture to match other Apple gear, as has become the norm with Twelvesouth products.

Do not put a MacBook Air on top of this shelf

Twelve South's website says it can hold the MacBook Air's weight but there is no assurance that the inserts will not loosen over time, and potentially falling and damaging your MBA. I had to place a card deck vertically just so that it added some support to the shelf. While this whole setup can give your desktop a minimalistic look, its a mess to deal with if you have to restart the MBA from a shutdown. This means your MBA has be in Sleep mode at all times and hope it does not shutdown. I returned the shelf(BackPack) after a few days. Its a great shelf for your external HDDs and tidy's up your desktop, which is why I'm giving it 2 stars. Also $34.99 is a bit too steep for such a small shelf.
