Apogee Duet USB Audio Interface for iPad, iPhone, and Mac

  • Overview

The award-winning Apogee Duet combines an audio interface, headphone amp, and MIDI interface that makes it a snap to create professional recordings in any location on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac. Incorporating Apogee's legendary digital audio conversion and world-class mic preamps, Duet is the best way to capture your music with incredible dimension and detail.

    Legendary Apogee sound quality

From the mic preamps to the AD/DA converters and the clocking, Duet is best-in-class and cutting-edge Apogee technology. With components carefully selected in critical listening tests and a highly efficient circuit design, Duet was built by Apogee engineers to make a difference you can hear.

    Full-color OLED display

Duet's primary visual control center is a full-color OLED high-resolution display. It gives you clear visual feedback for numerous essential functions, such as metering, numeric value for input and output levels, group, phase, muting, phantom power, and Soft Limit indication.

    Configurable touch pads

Two configurable touch pads on either side of the multi-function controller knob let you promptly manage such output functions as “mute output," “dim outputs," or “sum to mono.” And there's a drop-down menu that lets you assign each one within Apogee's Maestro iOS and Mac application.

    MIDI on iPad

Duet provides a single USB MIDI connection for your CoreMIDI compatible keyboard, synth, or DJ controller. On iPad, Duet's MIDI connection allows both Duet and a keyboard or DJ controller to be connected at the same time to the iPad's single 30-pin dock port (or via the Lightning connector using an Apple Lightning to 30-pin adapter).

    DC power charges iOS devices

With a direct digital connection and an external power source, Duet is able to charge your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch while you record so you won't experience any interruptions.

      Portable High Quality

Excellent sound quality compares to the best rack mount interfaces in terms of preamps and general sound quality . Price is a bit high, but you get what you pay Excellent sound quality compares to the best rack mount interfaces in terms of preamps and general sound quality . Price is a bit high, but you get what you pay for. If you are looking to record on an iPad or iPhone this is the perfect solution. It is the only device on the market that allows you to charge your i Pad while using it, all others (there are a few high grade interfaces that work with ios) you would need to stop working and wait to recharge, that would just kill any ideas or musical inspiration you have if for that one time you forgot to recharge. I found that the latency is great! You can play guitar or sing without any delays, even on an iPad 1 is usable. All in all don't waist your time to look and compare if you want portability, quality and peace of mind not having to recharge all the time then there is no contest, the only thing is the price tag.

The beautiful design of the product with its full OLED display really makes it pleasing to the eyes. All it's other features like charging your iPhone/iPad while it's connected and of course having the capability to record, produce and mix professional quality music with this simple product make it one of the best investments I have ever made.

I sometimes use it just to listen to music and love it. Second, the design is beautiful. Very Apple-like: simple elegant. Third, it is easy to use. Great integration with a Mac (esp. via the Maestro software). Fourth, the integration of MIDI with the most recent generation is huge—in fact, I sold a previous version and bought this version just for the MIDI. Very handy, esp. when you have a limited number of USB ports. Fifth, very mobile: easy to bring with you for mobile recording. I highly recommend it.

      Great sound but noticeable latency

If you are u The Duet is a great sounding interface. But it suffers from the same USB latency problem that Apogee has solved with its big brother, the Emsemble. If you are using Duet for recording a guitar, for example, you will hear noticeable latency even at 96khz sample rate (of about 3-4 ms). The Maestro app will help with this, but it means you are monitoring your guitar without plug ins. If you are using Duet with MainStage you will have the same latency which makes it unusable for a live guitarist who wants to use MainStage to perform. To be fair, this isn't an Apogee problem. It is true of all USB interfaces and all older Macs because to process 96khz takes a lot of CPU power. I tested the Zoom Tac-2 Thunderbolt interface with my MacBookAir 1.7 ghz i7 at 96khz with a 32 sample buffer (lower sample buffers reduce latency but increase CPU load) and it had 1.3 ms of latency - which is unnoticeable to the human ear, thus equivalent to analog and wonderful to perform with live. But the CPU of my Air can't handle the plugin processing, e.g Amp Farm and a few effects. So it pops. We are at the threshold of a new era. With the Ensemble, Apogee has achieved 1.1 ms and with a new MacBook at 3.0 ghz a guitar player should be able to play "in the box" with a full set of plug ins and no latency in MainStage and Logic. I would be very surprised if Apogee doesn't release a new version of Duet with Thunderbolt with a lot less latency very soon. The Duet and the new Ensemble use the same 32 bit chip, so the same performance should be relatively easy to achieve. Let's hope a new Duet arrives soon.

      Transparent and fantastic!

This interface will take the blanket off of your I/O. Opens up a new dimension and spaciousness to mixing.
