  • Best Answer:

The BR30's are downlights, typically installed in can-style ceiling lights. These lights direct the light emitted in a more narrow cone, whereas the "original" non-BR30 lights are designed to scatter light as widely as possible, like a normal bulb you would put in a ceiling fan or a lamp. Aside from the above, they a functionally the same in regards to their "smart" features. Both bulbs' starter packs require use of an included hub that is wired directly into the users network, both bulbs act as repeaters to bulbs that might be too far from the hub, and both are compatible with the app and the IFTTT service for automation.
