Even if you plug headphones into the headphone jack, the chime will still sound out of the main speakers when you start up. This is a problem if you want to start up and not disturb someone in the same room.
Your only other option is to start from the "sleep" setting, instead of turning your computer completely off. This makes no sound when you start up. If you can't do that and you have to turn your computer off, you will get the chime from the main speakers when you start up.
