    Frustrating & Unreliable

    • Written by from WAUKESHA

I purchased two WeMo Insight switches from Apple.com in July 2014. Last month, fed up after 11 months of frustration, I removed both switches permanently.

As another reviewer noted, these switches have one job: to turn lights on/off. Accomplished primarily through the Belkin/WeMo app, which promises flexibility and customization, the app has consistently failed to deliver such. Despite several app and switch-firmware updates, my user experience and satisfaction have steadily decreased because bugs, issues and other inconsistencies are never addressed.

Instead, each app update might or might not recognize my switches from one moment to the next. And even when a switch appears in the app, the activation time ranges from 2-10 seconds, so I often resorted to using the switch on the Insight itself - inconvenient when behind a desk or sofa.

The app promises to offer usage analytics, such as energy consumption, last on, duration, etc., but has never provided any such data and usually even fails to recognize that a light was on. (To be fair, I use compact fluorescent and LED bulbs, but the app should recognize low-energy bulbs given their growing preference.)

Next, the on/off rules I created in-app to control lights when I'm away from home neither work reliably nor enable me to verify their on/off status in-app when on the road. Instead, I returned home recently after a week's vacation and discovered that my WeMo-programmed switches had inexplicably illuminated my household from roughly 3:30-7:30 p.m. every day, instead of 8:10-11:15 p.m. like I programmed.

The final straw occurred when even the manual switch atop one of my Insights failed to respond.

I'm certain there are better home-automation products out there. If you're hoping Belkin's WeMo Insight switches will do the job, please keep looking.

    Works perfectly

    • Written by from Toronto

A great home automation starter. The WeMo Insight Switch is a powerful device that works flawlessly. The setup was straight forward and add recipes in IF was east as well. I can now switch off my lights and other devices plugged in with my Apple watch!

    Go for it!

WeMo, you had one job and you failed!

    • Written by from Sammamish

It's main job is to turn stuff on and off. It can't do that reliably. I'll be sitting in my office, and the lights will turn on at midnight for no reason. Come home from work and the lights are still on during the day. At night, around 10pm, no lights.

Belkin says they're aware of the issue, but no fix. If you have one job, you should do it well.

Another bite in the rear, it doesn't misunderstands daylight savings time. You'll be an hour off in most timezones.

Not so bad, but not stable

    • Written by from Montreal

I bought this product for my mother's house. I was badly tired to go change the schedule of the old mechanics style she got before. So with the description of this product, I was thinking I just have to buy this new one and set-up with the sunset and close in the midnight. I was thinking no more set-up will be needed. But my parents start to told me than the light doesn't close at night and often (not always) the light keep open when they wake-up. I find than sometimes the Wemo lost his connection and probably if it's when he suppose to close, he just... not close? I just don't really know. But it's work until it doesn't... just not stable. I have "hue" from philips at my apartment and I just love more this concept and it's reliability. Not perfect to but so much better. I just don't understand how reliability his not the first criteria for a company? Who knows?

    Not AirPlay compatible

    • Written by from Boynton Beach

The switch itself works as advertised but if you have AirPlay devises you might want to find something else. These devices cause AirPlay to cut out and Belkin has not been able to correct it. Below was the response I got from them.

Thank you for contacting Belkin Technical Support.

We understand that launching the WeMo App disconnects the Air-Play. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

    Disappointing and Buggy!

    • Written by from Brooklyn

Got this as a birthday gift and was really excited to try it out. Unfortunately this product should really still be in the beta testing phase. It feels like Belkin released it to the public just to get ahead of any potential competition. Setting up the device is a bit of a headache and 50% of the time it still doesn't recognize the device when my iPhone and router are only 10 feet away; and if it does recognize it, it will say it's on when it's off and vice versa. Very buggy!

Also, this thing acts almost as if it were possessed. I completed a software and firmware update, hard reset the device, cleared all rules and talked to Belkin's help desk and it STILL turns on/off randomly every morning around 9am and during the day and middle of the night. The last time it did that, it was a rapid on/off for over 5 minutes. I uploaded a video onto YouTube of it. Because his device is automatically turning on/off it is costing more electricity to operate which is fundamentally the opposite of one of the reasons to purchase it in the first place – to monitor and be efficient with energy consumption.

Overall, it's very disappointing because Belkin was a reputable company and this technology has so much potential. I don't recommend this product, and will actually be returning this one.

Simple and beautiful product with little "insight"

    • Written by from Barrington

As WiFi smart plugs go, the Belkin WeMo Insight Switch is beautifully designed, easy to set up and simple to use. Ironically, it lacks the useful utility experience eluded to by it's namesake. The app provides little to no real insight. It would be great to see a visualization of the data it collects and review that data by date and time, run reports and ultimately draw some usage conclusions.

Additionally, the plug itself lacks an external power button, making the app the sole option for turning power on and off. Sometimes, it's easier to just flick a switch.

    Doesn't support Time-Of-Use

    • Written by from Maple

Such a good concept to have the ability to turn devices of after x amount of power consumption. Just one flaw, some energy providers do Time-Of-Use (TOU) billing which offer different rates depending on TOU. But that looks like something simple that can be addressed with a software update.

Fantastic - does all it says, even more

    • Written by from Mississauga

Fantastic product, very well done in every way. Unusually easy automatic setup (normally with this many aspects, it's a lot more involved, but this was super simple). Works perfectly as a remote or automated (with all sorts of real simple ways to have it controlled, including sunrise/sunset, and even more complex things like weather if you want to get into the IFTTT option) on/off power outlet, but even better are its power monitoring features (which is the feature this WeMo "Insight" switch adds). The screen shots of the app show what you get, current watts being used, costs (if you enter your electricity cost), etc, which gives you a true amount for what things like a heater, car battery/engine warmer, christmas lights, etc (N.B. only if the WeMo switch is inside a garage with extension out to car/lights/etc, it can't be used outdoors), or other high-wattage items actually cost to run, and lets you save money by controlling them to only have them on when really needed, or turn them off after you leave if you forgot. Things like electronic devices aren't as easily controlled because most such devices default to off when the power is turned back on at the outlet (i.e. you have to turn on the WeMo, then manually turn on the TV in most cases), but you can turn them off, and even more useful is that the WeMo can monitor when they are manually turned on and off (and even notify you of that, or you can email a log of past activity) or you can set a time range when the device can be used. You program the WeMo from the app, and it then works independently (i.e. your phone can be turned off and the WeMo keeps doing what it's supposed to). This is the only such product (from anyone) that I've found that monitors actual power usage and even includes programable actions based on that, and so nicely done not requiring the app to remain connected to the device for it to keep doing what you programmed it to do. Very well thought out and done Belkin.

    Love it!

    • Written by from Chesapeake

The switch was easily picked up on my wifi network and works flawlessly. Its almost magical the way you can set it turn on at Sunset (which is different everyday, duh?) or off at sunrise. I have the Wemo light switch and it works great too. Thanks Belkin!

    WEMO switch

    • Written by from Auburn

The switch was easy to install and it works well. I knew it was just a matter of time before someone came out with this type of product. Congratulations. I believe home automation will be very big in the future and will pay for itself through energy savings.
