    Not very happy!!!!!!

    • Written by from Skokie

Bought this case bout 1 year ago. It was good looking and felt great. When new, this is the most attractive color available and it's very nice to the touch. I bought the brown leather case. The edges of the cover have absorbed body oils (I suspect) and looks terrible. No complaints about how it works, but it has become stretched where the magnets don't line up. So when I close and assume it's sleep,it's not. This leaves the backlight on which drains battery. I paid $79.00 for this case from Apple Store. I should have read some reviews before purchasing. Dont get me wrong it's a great case, after awhile it will lose it firmness.

    Beautiful case, but terrible stand

    • Written by from Myrtle Beach

The construction and overall design of this case are beautiful, as I would expect from Apple. The problem is that the cover does not make a good stand. They made the cover out of three sections as opposed to the four sections that the iPad gen 4 smart cover was. Because it is three sections, it doesn't give a strong base to stand on and the cover folds into itself when trying to prop the iPad up. I returned it and will be getting a third party case.

I liked it when working. Decomposed-broke on me after 10 months

    • Written by from Midlothian

I'm fine with the weird folding system and tolerated how often the thing would just fall over while reading. It works fine for me. But, I noticed it kept coming loose and then I noticed the right edge had like a broken edge. I never take the iPad out and I'm not an abuser. I take care of my stuff. This thing is not useable as it will not hold the iPad now except completely flat.

I just did a chat with Apple and they told me that cases can be submitted for replacement if not functioning but that my description would not be eligible. Not sure how a case is not functional if it's not holding the iPad as it is designed to do. $80 piece of throw away stuff now. Disappointed in the quality and Apple's response.

    Hate the feel/fabric

    • Written by from Sea Girt

Just bought this for my brand new iPad and I absolutely hate it. It claims to be leather but feels more like suede. It is so soft it's slippery I constantly feel like it's going to slip out of my hand and it's always slipping out of the triangle when I try to prop it up. Not only does it feel terrible but I just know this soft fabric is going to be ripped up from being taken all around town in my bag. The pictures make it seem like typical flat to the touch, tough, leather, not this teddy bear delicate kind, I'm returning it immediately.

    Standardly Standard

    • Written by from Albertville

The headphone opening is too small to fit oversized headphone inputs, the side buttons feel clunky but functional. The iPad fit snugly in the body, but the cover is not what i expected. It bulks in the first joint slightly and refuses to lie flat on the screen. It doesn't fit quite comfortably in the hand as I would have thought, and for the price of the case alone, I expected a firmer material and snug fit.

    IPad Air case looks dirty

    • Written by from Baldwinsville

I am so disappointed with this case. I purchased the brown, I thought it was beautiful. It felt so nice and looked great and I didn't have any trouble with the stand or the magnets. But over time the oils from my fingers have discolored that beautiful leather. It looks awful! I've tried everything I can think of to clean it and restore it to something close to its original appearance but nothing has worked. I paid $79 for this case that hasn't even lasted five months before it needs to be replaced. I am not happy.

    Good looking, but poor functionality.

    • Written by from Ventura

Doesn't stand up worth a ding dang. Very frustrating. If you want to prop it up to write emails and stuff, you're gonna hate it.

Stands up ok in the movie viewing format though, as long as you don't breath on it wrong.

I gave it an extra star because it sure looks pretty.

    Change it back

    • Written by from Hood River

I have used the original Smart Cover for the iPad 2 for 3 years. The new cover and case for the iPad Air isn't impressing me. The material is nice, but the design isn't. The cover has one less fold than the previous covers. This causes the incline to feel less secure and the magnet doesn't hold well. I feel like I am always readjusting it and trying to keep it from coming undone. I am writing this review simply to give Apple my feedback in the hopes that they head back to the drawing board on the covers design or head back to the original design. It was far better.

    Not that great, way overpriced.

    • Written by from Raytown

I've had this case for about four months and over that time the cover flap has started to become very flimsy with daily use. It also doesn't work that well when you try to use it as a stand. Honestly it's just not that great of a case, I would look elsewhere. Too overpriced for something that wears down so fast.

    Very Poor Usability & Design

    • Written by from Santa Fe

I owned the smart cover for my iPad2 and loved it, but it had no back protection. When I saw the new design I was thrilled! That is, until I got one. The cover NEVER lays flat when closed. There's always a gap between the cover and screen. The 3-panel design is VERY UNSTABLE as a stand. iPad just falls over when watching videos. Worst of all NONE OF MY HEADPHONES FIT IN THE JACK NOW!!! I HAVE TO REMOVE THE CASE TO USE HEADPHONES!!?? FOR REAL??!! Apple's all-around product quality has seriously diminished since the change in management. SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED!!

    Not worth the money

    • Written by from Easton

The leather is nice enough, but the hinge protrudes from the side of the case, creating a sharp edge. This makes the case very uncomfortable to hold - a really bad design choice from a company which otherwise makes very, very good ones.

    case must be improved

    • Written by from Mono

I bought a leather case for my new Air inspite of the negative reviews as I wanted to start using the machine ASAP. The case is attractive, but I agree that it does not close completely so the screen is left exposed to dust etc. This is not what I expected of a product sold by Apple. I suggest that all of us with this complaint be offered a free upgrade when this product is improved. Also although I have learned how to make the case fold to support the device my friend who has the previous 4-fold case is happier with it than I am with the 3-fold verison. Why was it changed?

    Won't stand

    • Written by from Providence

High quality in almost every way except that it won't stand up! I'd love this case otherwise, but it's a big part of what I use it for. I even returned it thinking it was a bad model, but it's a design issue.

Apple, please redesign and allow users to change it in. $79 is NOT cheap for a case and it should do what it advertises.

    Fundamentally Flawed...

    • Written by from Dublin

Well made, fits device great but having a flap with 3x folds instead of 4x is simply wrong It just isn't stable in your hands. Ita like a bad juggling game trying to maintain the triangle shape and hold the ipad to type. Whomever signed off this design should be given their Marching orders immediately. SJ would NEVER have let this design out the door. Alan.

Black screen when folded all the way back

    • Written by from San Antonio

The screen goes dark, sleep mode I suppose, when the cover is flipped all the way back and touches the lower backside of the unit. I think that the magnets activate sleep mode when in contact with that area behind the unit. I am trying to adjust how I handle the unit to prevent this from happening, but it is such an inconvenience. This does not happen at all with ipad and vinyl cover. Will likely take the case back.

    Beautiful but flawed

    • Written by from Kailua-Kona

The case is beautiful, the leather is soft and great quality. The brown looks amazing on the white iPad Air...but...the case does not lay flat at the hinge and it's gap does not get smaller with time and use. I am surprised that Apple released this product the way it is now. As a stand it is flimsy and prone to fall, not as good as the previous smart cases that had the 4 separate magnet design(this only has three, probably due to the fact that it's thinner). Hopefully they will release a better version but as of now it's pretty much an $80 pretty looking case that's not functional.

    Good fit, poor performance

    • Written by from Bronson

This case looks nice but don't plan to use it as a stand. The way the cover folds into a stand it is supported only by magnets and will collapse with slight pressure. Apple missed the mark on this one.

For $79 Why Should You Have to Compromise?

    • Written by from Denver

Really? I remember when the iPad first came out Apple was handing out smart covers. Now that iPad accessories have turned into more robust product line for Apple, you see things like $80 covers and $30 30 pin to lightning converters. All this is fine - and Apple should be able to charge what the market will bear... with the caveat that these expensive accessory products should (like the products themselves) actually work and fill a need. Sadly, the leather iPad Air Smart Case falls short of this goal - and doesn't do the trick for me - my chief complaint being that you simply can't use this in portrait (i.e., reading) mode. I returned my case because of this - and because the case itself did not sit flush against the glass surface of the iPad. So basically it did not do what I needed it to do. I'm looking for Apple to step up the quality of its accessory offerings to more than simply white labeling an inferior product. Let's see some of the Jony Ive innovation in the accessory department.

    A step backward

    • Written by from BOSTON

I have the 3rd gen ipad Smart Cover, and it's an impressively simple design that works very, very well. The new case for the Air is loaded with issues that are unacceptable for something coming out of Cupertino:
    1. The case protrudes further over the edge than the cover, making it difficult to grasp the cover to open it.
    2. The three-section stand design is absolutely useless compared to the robust four-section design. The new one falls flat, literally. I'm actually surprised. It's like the designers never actually used one.
    3. The cover doesn't lie flush and looks sloppy
    4. The hinge is just a flap of leather and is too stiff to let the ipad stand upright properly. The hinge (an actual hinge) on the 3rd gen cover moves much better. The new one might break in if I weren't returning it tomorrow.

Two stars because the materials are nice and it looks good.
