Overview
Sphero BOLT is an app-enabled robotic ball that helps you be creative and have fun while learning. Program with the Sphero Edu app from nearly any iPhone or iPad, discover awesome community-created activities, or just drive and play. BOLT was built to shine with a brilliant 8x8 LED Matrix that animates and displays real-time data. Create and customize games and learn to code by drawing on your screen, using Scratch blocks, or writing JavaScript text programs. For even more drive modes and games, connect BOLT to the Sphero Play app and keep the fun rolling.
Use advanced sensors to keep tabs on BOLT’s speed, acceleration, and direction, or orient and drive BOLT with the built-in magnetometer. BOLT also features infrared communication, allowing your robot to “communicate” with other BOLTs, enabling brand new games and advanced coding tactics. Does this work outdoors? Does it have adequate traction on grass? Does the IR datacomm between units work in sunlight? How impact-resistant is it?

Answer
Yes, the ball is waterproof The cover is heavy duty polycarbonate acrylic, alone, traction wouldn't Yes, the ball is waterproof The cover is heavy duty polycarbonate acrylic, alone, traction wouldn't be very good on grass. But this Sphero ball and the rest of the 'full size' balls can be fitted with either of two optional 'covers'. One type is nubby, and is a great benefit on multiple surfaces. The second one is the 'turbo' cover designed to get more traction, but it is more speed related than the nubby. The communication from device to the ball is through bluetooth, unaffected by sunlight. The ball is very 'sturdy' making it quite impact-resistant, but no acrylic ball can be unbreakable.
