Is it true the Thunderbolt 3(USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter will not work with drives that have a "captive cable"?

I'm looking for an affordable, portable external Thunderbolt 3 SSD drive to connect to my iMac 27" Late 2015 computer which has two Thunderbolt 2 ports. So thought I would use the Thunderbolt 3(USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to achieve this. However I read that the adapter doesn't support drives with captive cables. Is that true? If so, will the adapter work to connect a LaCie Rugged Pro 1000 GB SSD drive (STHZ1000800)? to my iMac Thunderbolt 2 port? As far as I can see that drive doesn't have a captive cable. thanks
