can this charge the new macbook from an iPhone plug or other power source that takes USB-A cables?

I don't recommend it as most USB A plugs only deliver up to 18W of power. The MacBook needs 29W to charge at optimal speed. It'll be fine if you charge it from a iPad charger overnight but a computer port or iPhone charger is a no no.
