  • Overview

With an AMD Radeon RX 560 graphics card inside, Sonnet’s eGFX Breakaway Puck Radeon RX 560 is an extremely portable, high-performance, all-in-one external GPU that accelerates popular graphics-intensive games on 13-inch MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, 21.5-inch iMac or Mac mini with Thunderbolt 3 ports.

For GPU acceleration when you’re on the road, the Puck conveniently packs with your MacBook in a backpack or computer bag. Thanks to the included Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps) cable that provides 60W of Power Delivery, you can connect the Puck to your 13-inch MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for power and charging — even when not in use — so you can leave your power adapter behind.

The Puck isn’t all about play — it’s also a multi-display graphics dock. When you need to expand your view, the Puck supports up to four 4K displays via three DisplayPort ports and one HDMI port, all connected to your Mac with a single cable.

      Tiny, Easy, and Fun!

After researching eGPUs I found the Puck to be the best option for me because it is teeny tiny with a lot of power. Even though it is portable I don't usually carry it around with me, but I love what little desk space it takes up. I missed the gaming and graphics power of my PC, but I did not miss the heavy brick of a thing or Windows. I wouldn't think of gaming on my Mac, but now I can! I have the best of both worlds with my Macbook Pro thanks to the Puck. It's a great addition!

      MacBook Air - Essential

I bought a MacBook Air in January because it’s super easy to carry, but the downside is it has basically 0 GPU capability, I mostly play Rise of the Tomb Raid I bought a MacBook Air in January because it’s super easy to carry, but the downside is it has basically 0 GPU capability, I mostly play Rise of the Tomb Raider and tried on my MB Air - got something around 15 frames/ sec. which is not really playable, even in lowest settings. Last month I bought the Puck 560. Huge difference? I can play Raider at around 50 frames. At home I hook up two 1080 displays but I also take the Puck with me when I want to play other places. The Puck completely powers my MB Air so I leave the Apple power adapter at home and throw the computer and Puck in my bag. Hard to believe I can game smoothly on a MB Air.

      Much lower cost and size

I like to play CounterStrike GO and needed to bump up my acceleration. I looked at the Blackmagic GPU box, but thought it to be too big (and it was more expensive). A few weeks later I saw the Breakaway Puck - a smaller and low cost option. Works great. Gaming is smooth and it sits right on top of my Mac mini. Found the company’s (Sonnet) store, I found a mounting bracket on there so I can hang the puck on the back of my monitor, weird they don’t offer that accessory in the apple store.

      Buyer Beware

This product may not boot properly with the Mac mini using Catalina. There is a problem with the eGFX Breakaway Boxes that Sonnet is aware of. According to So This product may not boot properly with the Mac mini using Catalina. There is a problem with the eGFX Breakaway Boxes that Sonnet is aware of. According to Sonnet, the problem occurs only with Mac mini and not laptops using Catalina. It will not complete the boot cycle so you can't even go into safe mode. Not sure about the Breakaway puck. It would be worth checking with Sonnet before you invest your money. I am unable to use my eGFX 550 until Apple engineering fixes the problem and it get pushed with a Catalina update. The only work-around is to revert to Mojave or switch HDMI cables back and forth between the Mac mini and the eGFX after booting. Also, I believe you have to disable file vault. This is all too much trouble.
