Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

Get help buying. or call 133-622.
  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Not sure if this is the right power adapter for your Mac?

See this article for more details about choosing the right one.

Knowing which specific Mac model you have is important. If you are running OS X Lion (10.7) or later, go to the “” menu at the top left of your screen, choose “About this Mac” then click the “More Info...” button. Your Mac model and generation will be displayed.

If you are running an earlier version of OS X, you can enter your serial number here to find out which model you have.

      Dear Apple

For such a great engineering company, why can't you get the obvious things fixed. These cords fray at the connector. ALL of them do. Sometimes at the power brick, sometimes at the Mac end. Then I have to go spend 80 bucks for another adapter - when all I really need is the cord. So do the right thing, and put a MagSafe connector on BOTH ends of the cord, and a MagSafe jack on the side of the power brick just like the one on the side of the computer. Then, I could (1) disconnect the cord completely from the adapter when it's in my bag, and not have to worry about the cord getting bent and broken where it connects to the power brick, (2) could have my choice of cord lenghts - maybe a short one for my desk and a long one when I travel, and (3) I could replace JUST THE CORD if it got damaged or worn, for something like 5 or 6 bucks instead of 80. What do you think? Would it be so hard to do?

Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

The port on the new MacBooks are smaller and more shallow, this charger reflects this change and will not make contact with older ports found on non-unibody. Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

They kinda fixed teh second most important problem...wow great job

While its fine and dandy that they changed one end of the cord, its the other end that is most likely to malfunction. I love my macs no doubt about it - but the While its fine and dandy that they changed one end of the cord, its the other end that is most likely to malfunction. I love my macs no doubt about it - but the magsafe adapters make me hate apple. The magsafe is such an expensive devise and at the same time the cord is so prone to braking off where it is connected to the charger. And then you cant just buy a new cord...you HAVE to buy a whole new charger...this is both very bad for the consumer and also for the environment. I really hope apple will soon realise that this way of milking costumers is not viable in the 21th century. So I beg you Apple: please fix the real problem and make a magsafe with a detachable cord.

Yet another 'marvelous' 'amazing' 'stunning' design that DOES NOT WORK

About twice a year we endure the Apple propaganda hammering in our ears how Jony Ive, once more, outdid himself and came up with the best design in the universe About twice a year we endure the Apple propaganda hammering in our ears how Jony Ive, once more, outdid himself and came up with the best design in the universe. Yet most of these 'incredible', 'magical' designs fail to survive just the most basic daily usage. These things are made to be locked in air-tight museums displays, only taken out once a year for adoration purposes, and carried around in bubble wrap. How can such a genius like that guy surpass himself so regularly? Maybe because he does not do a proper job in the first place. Not even, now that I come to think about it. because after 5 iterations he still does not get it right.... When you pay 100 CAD for a charger, it must be the mother of all electrical chargers. The Mercedes-Benz of chargers! But not with Apple, no. Apple sells us cheap Chinese stuff for the price of German engineered marvels. I can't wait for the bubble to burst.

Here we are again, my charger has died for no explicable reason. Ive never had problems with power chords when i had a DELL! Judging by the other comments, this is a huge problem! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix this! My computer costed $2k, i really cant afford to be buying another charger for it every couple of years. If i could give this 0 stars i would.

All because of fraying of the thin adapter cord. I don't abuse the cord. It normally sits in one place. It's not bent, twisted, pinched or anything else. It's just poorly made. Apple needs to take these reviews seriously and make a better product.
