Functions well but does not last.

    • Written by Edwin O. R from Haverstraw

In the 8 years I've owned my MacBook, this is the fourth time I find myself replacing this charger. All four of them have done their job of charging my laptop, but all four have simply died on me. Not because of damage nor misuse... All of them were in mint condition besides the slight discoloration from the charger being in my bookbag. There are no tears, there was no damage. It literally just ceased to function. Now a $79 price tag is an unjust price for something that obviously is not built to last and there are thousands of reviewers to testify to this. We ask if we are to be charged $79, make it last.

    College Students Already Pay Enough

    • Written by Jared P from Encino

    Dear Apple,

I'm currently an undergrad sophomore studying psychology. I have two assignments due tomorrow and three more due on wednesday, all of which have to be typed, and my computer's charger stopped working this morning.

So, naturally, I go to buy a new one from my bookstore, which is a certified apple seller. Great. Same prices.

I was thinking, "Oh boy it's gonna stink to have to spend 40, maybe 50$ on a new charger. But hey, if I gotta do it, fine. This is for school." Boy was I wrong.

I arrive at the bookstore and they tell me it costs not 40, not 50, not even 60, but 80 dollars for a new charger.

Oh, sorry. Not 80. It costs 79.

I cannot believe that you, Apple, are so pretentious and snobby enough to release chargers that hardly even work at a price that is higher than the amount of money I make in half a week. I already paid over a thousand dollars to use your macbook pro, which shows me more rainbow spinny wheels than I would see if I worked at a carnival (where things are cheap and fun, I might add).
Apple, I'm sorry, but I'm breaking up with you.

    Okay, Okay, I'm done ranting.

I just wanted to let you know that I am now dropping out of college because I won't be able to get this assignment in on time due to the fact that my computer is dead and I cannot charge it.

I'm typing this on a chromebook that I borrowed from my friend, by the way. Cheap charger + Great computer. I hate you.

Have a great time living your life with poor people's money, Apple. I hope you are happy that you've ruined the dreams and hopes of yet another college student living in America just trying to get by.

No Stars, but Apple forced me to give one

    • Written by Joe S from Charlotte

On my 4th charger in five years - Love Apple, but come on... How can these things constantly go bad? I bought an aftermarket charger a year ago, thinking at least I would save a little money. That one is done, too. So I am buying a fifth one today - OEM - and hope it is the last one.
Seems like a great idea- but these things are so fragile that I feared taking my laptop with me. Figured if I left in on the desk at home the charger would last forever. I SHould have bought an iMac....I realize my rant will benefit no one. Apple, what is the deal?? My laptop still serves me fine, but when I upgrade what shall I buy? Know what I mean....

    Breaks Everytime

    • Written by Annie M from Westborough

I'm now on my 3rd macbook (just because I've upgraded and been given one for grad school), and every single one I've gone through AT LEAST 2 of these chargers. I always buy them on Amazon because I can't justify purchasing something for $79 that I know is going to break eventually. It's really disappointing that Apple hasn't addressed this issue (that I know of), and continues to sell this horrible product for $79. I've had my newest macbook/charger for less than 6 months and the wires are already popping out.

I'm a huge supporter of Apple and think they create some incredible products, but this is not one of them. There should definitely be a warranty on the charger when you buy the computer!

People are far too harsh - it's perfectly fine

    • Written by Kieran B from NORTHAMPTON

My original power adapter broke after three years of continuous use. I'm a heavy user of my Macbook Pro and so the charger got a lot of use also. Bought a replacement and it's absolutely fine. I don't expect things to last forever with such heavy use, and so would consider the Apple Power Adapter to be quite durable on all accounts. It goes without saying that the actual MagSafe feature is brilliant and has saved my Macbook Pro from a nasty fall on multiple occasions.

    Three adapters in 4 years

    • Written by Brett I from Centerville

I have now gone through two adapters in 4 years. The cord wears thin, frays and breaks open at the junction to the converter. I try to be careful when I wind it up (especially after I had to replace my first one) but it happened a second time. The computer runs great, and I think the charger should last the life of the computer--particularly when it costs $80 to replace them. I feel it wouldn't be that hard of an issue to fix by simply adding more rubber to stiffen the cord.

Apple really needs a redesign of these things. They seem to break in the same 2 places at the same time. We pay enough for these laptops that the charges should last!

TOTALLY APPALLED!! The durability of the power cords is the Achilles' heel of the loyal supporter's defense of all things Apple. With the iPhones and iPads, we just buy a sturdier cord from a third party. But with the MacBook we are held hostage to repeatedly purchase these inferior cords with absolutely no recourse for relief from such rapid deterioration. It's not like we use them for dental floss. After all, without the cord, there is no power.

Until I went online to purchase the third power cord in three years for my husband's MacBook Pro, I thought this problem unique to us. SHAME ON YOU APPLE!!!

For a company that prides itself on quality, the power cords of appear to be the horribly mistreated and neglected stepchildren. I, like so many others are staunch Apple supporters. When others cry about the cost of the latest version or the newest product, we stand behind the name because we know the track record is solid. The actual devices are unarguably the best on the market. But at some point in time there will be a group of us that will get fed up with having to repeatedly shell out funds to keep these top of the line products powered up. WE DESERVE AND EXPECT BETTER!!!!

Apple, please pay attention to your loyal base. Devote just a tiny part of your R&D budget to sturdier power cords that do not fray from basic normal use within the first several months of use.

I'm in disbelief at how poor of a product this is from Apple. I'm shocked at how dangerous this product is. The cord between the charger box and the laptop developed a crack approximately 2 centimeters from the box. The wires frayed and started sparking! Really Apple? This could easily start a fire and cause all kinds of problems. Think about the number of college kids using this device in their dorms and apartments. This defect could lead to a horrible disaster! APPLE needs to fix this now! I'm so disappointed in APPLE. You did not meet my expectations!

    Slow Charge

    • Written by Sanja K from Toronto

Ordered a new adapter once the one purchased with my computer started exposing wires around the contact and bulk part. I can't say it didn't last - got me through 5 years of constant use. My problem with the new purchase is the slow charge ability. If I leave it charging through the night it might reach full by morning. I'm going to inquire with Apple if it's a factory defect. If not then this product's clearly downgraded.

    Overpriced Toot!

    • Written by James T from Grays

Purchased this as a second unit to leave permanently plugged-in downstairs where I usually sit. The outer insulation has now cracked and frayed just near the connector. Admittedly, the thing is about five years old, but then so is the original 'T-shaped' connector that actually came with the macbook, and that's still working and in fine condition. Apple take note: it's stuff like this that will erode your share of the market!

    Absolutely Horrible

    • Written by Stephen C from Fenton

These chargers consistently break and wear away within a year. I constantly am forced to replace them. I have owned my mac for 5 years and gone through 6 chargers in that time. They simply do not last, despite any additional efforts I put forward to improve their longevity. Absolute shame these are still sold at $80, makes me hate apple.

The worst laptop charger to exist!

    • Written by Mariah F from stillwater

First off, I am a long-time windows user and switched to Apple products in late 2012. I have been pleased with their line of computers along with their software and hardware other than what seems like required maintenance issues every year... so let me explain. I am about to receive my 3rd charger in 3 YEARS from apple because of recalls and/or defects from this line of macbook pro chargers. The first time it happened was when the thin rubber wire connecting to the dock broke off suddenly leaving wires frayed. It happened in just one day there was absolutely no "wear and tear" or damage to the product whatsoever. Applecare thankfully fixed it and gave me a new charger.

Then just recently I was sitting at my desk when all of the sudden my charger started smoking! I went to grab it in a hurry and burned my fingertips! The wires had overheated and caused a small fire to the rubber protective cover. There was even dark brown residue on the rubber cover from the sparks and/or fire! I sent pictures to Apple with all the following details and they are in the process of getting a new charger sent out. I have never regretted owning my macbook pro until now just because of a ridiculous charger issue. I may be switching back to windows if these issues with these chargers are NOT fixed. FIX YOUR DOCK CHARGERS APPLE BEFORE YOU GET A LAWSUIT!

Terrible design, not made to last

    • Written by Patrick S from Niantic

The design of this charger is garbage. Sure it has a sleek design that looks nice, but the junction of the laptop cord with the adapter is so weak that even if stored properly will wear out in less than a year. I've gone through two chargers since I bought the laptop in 2012. For such an expensive piece of equipment you would expect a lot more. Apple needs to read the reviews on their own product, because they're failing their consumers, but of course they won't because it's just another way to make more money...not pleased

Way too expensive and have to replace too often

    • Written by Brittany P from Perth

I find the charger is great and effective... unfortunately not for a very long time. When i starter using my MacBook charger, i only used to cord for less than 10 months before it stopped working.

As a student, it is very hard for me to get $130 to spend on a charger. I find it absolutely ludicrous that it is that expensive, and I've had to fork out money for another charger in such a limited amount of time.

It would be terrific if Apple would consider lowering the price or add at least a warranty that covers more than simple defect, as over time the cord pulls lose from its fitting which (in my case) wasn't my fault.

    Just do not last

    • Written by Deep D from Glasgow

Very bad cables. I had to replace my original with a newly branded apple cable. Guess what it did not even last 6 months. The cable broke. Tried attaching with tapes and stuff.

    Dear Apple,

We purchase your products with utmost trust and love for the product. I paid £60 for this cable and I am extremely unhappy. Now I have to pay another £60 to get a new cable. I request you to take some action and better the product.

Please donot lose our trust by providing such kind of products.

These chargers are so badly designed I am now having to buy my 2nd in two years. The wire connecting to the white box just frays and the internal wires become visible and dangerous. I can no longer charge my laptop without holding the charger in place at a certain angle! It also massively overheats to the point of smelling. I bought my last one less than 18 months ago, and this is my 3rd in 4/5 years and at £65 each they are a complete rip off. This has been a problem for such a long time so I am both surprised and disappointed that a new design hasn't been developed.
