Apple chargers (and Apple cables in general) are unfortunately of such a bad quality that it's laughable - and this charger is of no exception. And are priced so high that it is an insult. Unfortunately you don't have any other choice when you use the rest of their hardware (which is great). Either they break where the wire meets the plug (as in their USB and such cables) or they break where the cable meets the adaptor (as in their power adaptors). Even when you use the well know "loop the cable beforehand if you intend to wind the cable up on the 2 hooks" technique they break (yes. The to hooks strain the cable even more if you actually just use them the way you would THINK that they should work - what "intuitive design").
I'm working through my THIRD adaptor in three years.
    Thank you Apple....not

    works but comes apart

    • Written by Jonathan S from Cheltenham

cable comes apart at the power block in the middle, never wrap the cable around the provided hooks, it bends the cable form the block to your mac at a stupid degree, and frays it. still works, but risk of electrocution/burns :(

    So far so good

    • Written by Nancy U from London

It works now but I would have appreciated a big red arrow pointing me in the direction of the firmware update required for an older MacBook before I spent ages feeling like a dumb blonde when I couldn't get it to work.

    Good & Bad

    • Written by J I from Philadelphia

I really love the design of the adapter, but I must say that it was not made for people who move up and down with their macbook.
I've had my Macbook Pro for 14 months, and I just had to replace my adapter.
It started heating up, and it would not give me the amber nor bright green lights. I had to move it around in different positions, and keep my computer in one place for it to charge. This shortage in power supply really affected my computers ability to retain charge.

    It just works

    • Written by N.V. P from BODMIN

I replaced my t style old power cable with this after squashing the old one in a door...read the reviews and felt worried as so many comments said it doesn't work. Why was I worried? Opened the box, plugged it in, charged the laptop. Thanks Apple- it is expensive but if I used a PC I would have spent this much just on virus protection this year...

    I hate this adapter

    • Written by Alma P from Irving

I've had my MacBook Pro for 6 months and I am having all kinds of issues with the adapter you have to wiggle it to get it to work. I can't move my laptop because it bends and it stops working. It overheats and it goes off at random....Apple needs to come up with a better product because this ruins my whole I love Mac Experience..

    Utterly TERRIBLE design.

    • Written by Anonymous A from 6590

Unless you like a naked, vulnerable mac, this power adapter will make your life miserable. I use a Speck case which forces the new, redesigned power adapter, to cover the ethernet port and the majority of the first USB port.

Ordering the original style one tomorrow from Amazon and returning this counter-intuitive power adapter.

The original version worked flawless for me. Only reason I had to buy a new one was because an airline stole my MacBook charger and my iPhone charger from my luggage.

    Failure in redesign

    • Written by Dayana E from Hyattsville

I've had my macbook for four years and recently had to buy my third magsafe. These things are not designed for longevity and I've begrudgingly accepted that. The latest MagSafe I bought had the new redesigned plug. Let me tell you, it is a hassle! I am CONSTANTLY having to push it in to make sure that it is charging. The redesign has shifted the pull on the plug so that if the laptop is on your lap, one side of the power jack will randomly lodge out and you have to push it back in. This is yet another failure on the part of MagSafe. This coupled with the fact that this is my third $70 adapter for the same laptop leads me to give it the one star it has so rightfully earned!

    Lasted 3 months

    • Written by James H from Herefordshire

Absurdly expensive for what it is, doubly so when it burns out so quickly. I bought mine abroad, was back-packing, have mislaid the receipt and doubt Apple will replace it. Will delete this review if they do.

    Excellent with room for improvement....

    • Written by Anonymous A from 6727

As a new Mac user, the MagSafe power adapter was one of those features that just floored me as an obvious, ingenious, and elegant solution to the more easily damaged power connectors I've used on PC laptops before.

With a few month of use, I've really liked: the dual-led, dual-state lights on the connector itself (green for charged, orange for charging, visible on both sides) - the option to carry the longer wall cable or adapt the DC adapter as a direct wall plug (less to carry on most days) - the cable itself is quite narrow/slim so it doesn't take up much room in my bag - the DC adapter has flip-out guides for easy cable wrap storage - the new L style connector routes the cable much more sensibly on the desk than the older T style connector, IMHO...

However, there are some things to nit-pick: the flip-out cable wrap guides are weak and seem to me as if they will break in the near future based on the reality of abuse that my book bag suffers; why not simply mold a guide track into the DC adapter body (this would leave nothing to break, and is an elegant and simple solution to this problem) - the clip attached to the cable to keep it wrapped around the adapter during transit is super weak, it never holds the cable wrapped (not once has it remained gripped to the cable in transit); please make a more secure clip.

    Bad angle

    • Written by Anonymous A from 6231

The angle this cord attaches at is not an improvement! Having a 13" cord doesn't seem like a bonus when I can't move the computer or set it down without the cord coming out. There is a permanent kink in the cord after just one month.

    Power Adapter

    • Written by Anonymous A from 6580

I recently bought my first Mac and love it so far, but this power adapter has such a short cord I rarely ever use it, and will end up wearing down on my battery. Apple needs to come out with a smaller adapter and a much longer cord, or at least the option of having a longer cord.

    Failed after less than 60days

    • Written by Anonymous A from 5604

It came with a new 13macbook pro. Hardly used not even a dozen recharges before it failed. The difference in quality of materials between this "new" power unit and the one that came with my Macbook (circa Tiger OS) is VERY NOTICEABLE and is not the usual Apple quality. In fact, the magsafe that came with Tiger OS macbook is still working just fine. This is really DISAPPOINTING ... watch out !

I love Apple, but this is not acceptable

    • Written by Anonymous A from 4678

I have a black MacBook that's a few years old now. The charger that came with the computer lasted three years and then stopped working. I thought this was really annoying - of all the problems I've had with PC's I've never had a problem with the power cord... Bought this power cord 3 months ago and then 2 days ago it started messing up (if I hold the cable and move it back and forth the light goes on and off). This is ridiculous. I was trying to be extra safe, not wrapping it up tightly or making sure the cord wasn't bending too much, but it still broke. Luckily, the warranty for the product is 1 year so I should be OK. My only advice: use your American Express card when purchasing because they automatically double the manufacturer's warranty to 2 years (I know some other credit cards do it too, so check yours if you don't have an Amex). Good luck!

Like the design, but not the quality

    • Written by Anonymous A from 6423

I like the new design. It is much easier to maneuver. However, I have had the product for less than 6 months and I have noticed the that the charge light frequently goes out. I have to jiggle the cord to get it to work. Considering the new design means I do not have to bend the cord as I did the last one, I am not sure why this is happening and there is no 'warranty'. The old design lasted 4 years, so although this one is more practical, it does not have the high standards I associate with Mac products.

Better than the old design so far.

    • Written by james H from Burlingame

I had the same problem with this charger as many people reported. The charger would randomly stop working and the only way to get it to work again was to remove the battery from the Laptop. The old "T" shaped chargers always worked but the new "L" shaped ones rarely did. Luckily there was just a firmware update for the macbook that fixed the problem. Now it works 100% of the time.
The new design seems a lot more solid than the old one. The "L" shaped connector also prevents alot of unnecessary bending of the power cord. I often use the macbook sitting on the couch. The old "T" shaped chargers would always get bent up by a nearby piilow, a poorly placed leg, or cat. The new "L" shape prevents the unnecessary bending so i'm hopeful it'll last longer than the old design.

Doesn't work, out of the box

    • Written by Anonymous A from 5512

We are on vacation for the weekend and my daughter needed to get some homework done but forgot the charger for her MacBook. Found an apple authorized dealer and purchased this product. It doesn't work at all.. Want to return it, but of course store is closed on Sundays, and we are heading home. Clearly, based on these reviews and my experience today this is a terrible product. Do not buy.

    Read This!

    • Written by Cathryn G from Houston

I have a 2008 Macbook and lost my charger on a trip. I was reluctant to order this new one as it is not the exact type they used to provide and after reading the previous bad reviews, I was concerned.

The first day, the charger worked but the second day, the light failed to eluminate and the laptop was not charging. Hence, my laptop died!

I visited the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and was amazed to find out that the laptop battery in the older Macbook's needs to be reset/cycled to work with the new power adaptors.

Apple is also coming out with a software patch that will address this issue.

I wonder if all the previous poor reviews are because of this issue? Hmmm....

To fix, simply remove the battery from the laptop and press the button for 10 seconds to reset it.

Once back in the battery slot, plug the laptop into the new charger and it works!

A GREAT tip for anyone wondering why this charger does not work with their 2009 and earlier Macbook. It is NOT the charger but the laptop. Voila!

Not as bad as they say.

    • Written by Pawel S from London

I bought this new charger after having accidentally broken my old T-shaped charger with worry in my mind based on the "overheating" reviews found here.

I can safely say that those reviews are scaremongering. The charger works without an issue, the MagSafe head does NOT overheat or burn you if it's touched. Cable management is far superior to the T-shaped MagSafe, plus you get a year warranty and peace of mind that the charger won't set fire to your house like some knock-off no-brand MagSafe's.
