    Burned out

    • Written by Michelle E from Hinesville

good thing i reached out before the mother board burned out completely. the adapter was a little over 2 yrs old. I had to clean the contact area with a toothbrush to remove soot most likely this was getting too hot while charging. though this did not last long before i had to replace the charger. for a 1700 comp with not so good quality accessories costing quit a few dollars to replace, not sure apple is listening to its customers.

    Charger

    • Written by Lameeka S from galloway

Charger started smoking while plugged up to my MacBook in Starbucks. Now I’m forced to buy a new charger for 80.00. Ridiculous the wire is so sensitive.

Cord unable to handle computer use while charging.

    • Written by Dylan N from NY

I had this charger for 2 1/2 years. One thing I observed about the cord is while the computer was in use and plugged in, the cord would overheat, and slowly deteriorate. I would expect the cord to last longer under normal use, but there should also be a way to account for when the computer is in use while charging.

    Short life time

    • Written by Alexia B from Telford

From reading these reviews I've realized that I'm not the only one who's charger shorted out after just 16 months of use. To be fair I do tend to accidentally leave my charger on fabrics or when removing it I don't do so extremely gently but isn't that the point of MagSafe, to be able to pull the cable out without damaging it or the laptop? I think that Apple should 1.Bring back MagSafe to new laptops. 2.Make the power box bigger to try and reduce heating. 3.Make the cable going into the computer thicker as it becomes very flimsy making it brittle and maybe it being so thin be the reason why the box may overheat? I am not an expert but I would consider some changes to make the charger's life last longer and also for such a weak charger why does it cost £79!? That's just disgraceful

The thin wire is too weak

    • Written by Marie-Helene L from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu

The power adapter is overall dependable... if the thin wire is in good shape. I travel a lot with my computer and I have to carry it and wrap the wire around the charger a lot, and by doing this, the rubber envelope is tearing up and I had to add some tape to avoid the wires to protrude. Moreover, I have to buy a power adapter each year or 18 months because the wires break and cannot carry electric power to recharge the computer. Finally, is it possible to sell only the power adapter with the thin wire? The thick wire is highly dependable and has a long duration; however, selling only the thin one would be less expensive to replace, and there would be less waste.

Unfortunately not anywhere near as durable as the Macbook itself

    • Written by Mark J from Germantown

Macbooks will last a loooong time, the most durable computers I know of. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the chargers. I've had only a few issues with the actual connection to the laptop itself. I'm having an issue now where the thin laptop cable runs into the charger brick itself. It disintegrates and splits open revealing an alarmingly frayed magnetic shielding of the cable. It should be much more bolstered around this point to prevent excessive pivoting and straining of the cable. What it has is not enough. The next one I buy I will try to alleviate this weak point in the design.

Wire insulation cracks within a year

    • Written by William E from Overland Park

The wire insulation at the magsafe 2 adapter cracks within a year. Adapter gets very hot; power brick gets very hot when charging as well.

One has a frayed cable, other one stopped working.

    • Written by Matthew E from WEST ALLIS

Somehow the one with a frayed cable has kept working since I first got it, but now one that I've owned for a year and 4 months just stopped working abruptly. I wish Apple would focus a little less on looks and a little more on durability.

    Falls Apart

    • Written by Emilee G from Austin

After reading several reviews I've realized that my charger has actually lasted an exceptionally long time by comparison, but four years in and my cable quickly began to deteriorate/fray around the magnet. Once it started the whole thing fell to pieces in a matter of maybe a month or two. Considering I used my previous macbook for seven years and never had a problem with the charger ever, I'm disappointed to see that Apple hasn't responded to the years of customers complaints over this particular charger model. Eighty dollars is a ludicrous sum of money for a product that should maaaaybe be replaced once in a lifetime, though hopefully never. The fact that Apple hasn't addressed this issue is extremely disappointing.

    Design to easily get broken

    • Written by Nurfatin M from Batu caves

Mine was "explode" last year - suddenly make a pop sound, but I've replace with the new one for free. The service and support person said that it is because there's a slight twist on the cable. But with the new one, still its so fragile, and sometimes I have to tweak the cable so the power will connected.

    Poor Design And Expensive!

    • Written by Joyce N from Brooklyn

I leave my laptop on a desk almost all the time and even I'm annoyed at this adapter. Just moving it slightly will case it to disconnect from the laptop. The slightest nudges from the top or bottom unplugs it so easily. Every time I move the laptop elsewhere, I have to hold the charger in and make sure it doesn't disconnect. BIGGEST flaw ever! And it sticks out way too much. I didn't have a MacBook back when the first L-shape chargers were standard and wish they didn't change it to this one. Lastly, it's too delicate, and it's EXPENSIVE to replace or even have an extra for convenience. I don't even feel confident bringing this charger anywhere outside fearing it'll break.

    Will break eventually

    • Written by Martin C from Altrincham

The macbook pro retina charger is very much form over function. More so than the laptop itself. Mine lasted about 27 months with diy duct tape repairs at both the magsafe end and the power cord end. If you have to replace this don't go to the apple store first. I got one from a very popular high street electronics store for £30 and its pretty much brand new. Apple should not be charging these ridiculous prices for a charger from a previous generation laptop.

Stiff and sticky cable, easy to break clips

    • Written by Darryl H from Kathleen

Power adapter charges fine and I have not found there to be a problem with the magnet as some other reviewers have mentioned. However, the thicker cable is very stiff so it does not roll easily for transport in a case. Also, the smaller cable is really sticky, so much so that it leaves a residue on your fingers and picks up dirt very easily. Not pleasant! Finally, the clips that allow the smaller cable to wind around the adapter for transport break very easily.

These are small details that make the use of a nice laptop much less enjoyable.

Poor adapter, not had one last longer than 2 years

    • Written by andrew C from sheffield

My 18 month or so Macbook retina has a failed magsafe 2 adapter. The unit gets very hot and died what I would consider very prematurely. The same thing happened with my first macbook air so I'm very disappointed having to buy 2 or 3 adapters through the life of 1 laptop.

    Expensive, frays easily, awkward...

    • Written by Ian L from Ithaca

I'm at my wits' end-- this is the 3rd time that I am replacing a power cord for my laptop, and that's after extending their lives with electric tape! The cords seem almost designed to fray quickly. Mine has frayed near the laptop connector just a year in.

Apple, not everybody has a perfect workstation at home to keep the cord in their "optimal geometry." Apple, for $80 you should be providing quality cords that can withstand some curving now and again. That's part of the convenience of having a light laptop. Otherwise, Apple, you should certainly be replacing frayed cords for free.

    Frays in only 5 month.

    • Written by William G from Middletown

I had gotten this cord only 5 months ago, and now the end with the end to charge is cracking and starting to fray. In my mind, I wasn't being harsh on the cord, just normal use (plugging it in at my desk, sitting with it at the table, etc.) where you would think the integrity of the design will hold up. Now i have to keep wrapping it in electrical tape to keep from killing myself or spend ANOTHER $85 to get a replacement, its not like I already shoveled my money to them when I bought the darn computer!

Breaks in less than a year

    • Written by Khanyiso M from Slough

I've had two of these in the space of two years and both have had their insulation shred at the same place (near the magsafe connection). It's treated no different to adaptors from other computer manufacturers and they survived years and they cost a lot less. Now I have to buy a third one in two years (very first one came with my computer). Rip off at the price that it is

    Weak magnet bad design

    • Written by Avi B from Los Angeles

The magnet always disconnects. Especially if you are working with the laptop in your lap. If you sit it down on couch, it disconnects. If you move at all, it disconnects. The T design makes it easy to bump and disconnect.

The good part, it does stay connected, if charging on a desk with no one near it.

    Over heat and snapped again

    • Written by Eric L from Auckland City

Bought my MacBook Pro in early 2014, less than 2 years, I had to replace the charger twice. Both time, the cable just snapped, and it heats up like a heater. Bad design, and it's not cheap!!!!
