    Quality - I think not

    • Written by Eric H from Wolverhampton

After spending over £2500 on a laptop I would have expected the charger to have lasted a little longer that 16 months. I am not a heavy user but the charger had now 'frayed' at the mag 2 connector showing the metal grading around the cable itself. It is a poorly designed and poorly constructed piece of equipment which lets down the whole product. I just wonder what Apple were thinking of.......

This product is a potential fire hazard - beware!

    • Written by Neil M from Birmingham

The body of this power adapter overheats something terrible. It is dangerous and a fire hazard. Today the cable coming out of the main unit melted exposing the internal wires. In the process it melted a hole in the carpet it was sitting on. Overheating seems to be a recurrent problem with this design. Tomorrow I will see what the Mac Store has to say about this. I assume that they will replace the product for free.

    Sad, unfortunate design flaw

    • Written by Eric O from Sunnyvale

The plug has a serious design flaw that causes it to disengage far too easily from the socket. The plug and wire extent out about 3/4" making it a long lever. The magnet is quite strong, and pulling the plug out straight takes quite a bit of force. Tap the wire or plug up or down however, and it comes right out. Such is the power of leverage. It works fine on a desk, but on your lap it can be a challenge to keep the plug in.

This should be, and hopefully will be, redesigned in the next revision. The lever needs to be shortened. The L connector design helps by removing the wire, but its not absolutely necessary. The plug itself is more important as it does not flex and is too long, Something shorter and fatter would be more effective.

    Horribly Weak Connection

    • Written by Katie F from Marion

After spending $2,000+ on a rMBP I am HORRIFIED at how annoying this connector is. The L-Shaped connector on my MBA was excellent but this is so weak. The entire point of having a laptop is to use it on my lap, on the couch, in bed, or any other place I desire... but this power adapter does not allow for that as it comes loose at the slightest nudge. It annoys me to the point of searching the internet for "tips" on how to keep the thing in there. (to no avail)... which led me here - where I just am going to repeat the cries of all the others that HATE THIS ADAPTER.

T shape - bad design for the power adapter

    • Written by Vishal D from PITTSBURGH

As others have commented before, the power adapter keeps falling off.

It's not that the magnet is week, but the design itself is faulty. Even the smallest force on the T-shaped connector acts perpendicularly, which easily hooks the connector off. The previous L-shape may have been a better design.

Last but not the least, I wanted to buy a spare adapter for home but $79 (+tax) for this useless adapter feels like a total ripoff!

That's the only explanation for why this adapter is never stays in my computer. I swear I plug it in constantly and next thing I know...unplugged. Is this Steve Jobs trying to play with our minds....Come on Apple give us all a better product or some money back for this terrible design!

    Poor Quliaty

    • Written by mohammad K from luton

My MacBook Pro Retina is only 8 months old.. the charger is already broken, the cable is very weak and there is an obvious stress point that was not taken care in the design. Now I have to buy a new one :(

Dangerous, poor design & rubbish quality!

    • Written by Vesaam C from Luton

I have had three Macs, the Retina being my fourth. Not a single MagSafe Charger has lasted longer than a couple of months and have had to constantly travel back and forth to an Apple Store to get replacements (Thirty minute drive each time, Apple Resellers take 3-5 working days to replace the item)

The Apple MacBook is a fantastic product but let down by the chargers! The cables always fray leaving the wires exposed which is extremely dangerous. My previous MagSafe2 charger would get extremely hot and fray which resulted in sparks and actually melting the product. My new one has frayed in a few months despite taking extra care of the product.

Furthermore, the size of the mains plugs has been reduced which is very hard to remove from mains sockets.

No-one expects paying so much for a product that has such a short lifespan.

    Fourth Time Buying a Charger

    • Written by jordan W from New York

I am extremely careful with my chargers, and make sure that I'm not fraying them, but these chargers eventually stop working no matter what you do to them. I am now buying my fourth charger for the same computer. There is no reason that this should be happening, especially at this high price point. Please fix this, Apple.

    Corporate strategy over consumer's experience

    • Written by Ferdinand R from Beeley

We all love Apple. We buy their iProducts because they function better than those of Apple's competitors, and they look prettier too. But we are all also aware of Apple's ruthless profiteering, and this product is a perfect example of their charge for cash coming before the user's experience. It appears of secondary importance that the product function well for a sustained period of time. The charger won't even come close to lasting the lifetime of the mac itself. It's such transparent monetising, and actually really very annoying. £65 every two years is a sick joke, and it's just SO fitting that they break within days of the EU warranty's running out. Apple; you have GOT to sort this issue out, because I look at my currently-uncharged (and unchargeable) MacBook and feel disgusted by your bleeding me for still more money. I love your products, but - cynically - at this point, it doesn't make sense for me/us/anyone to keep buying them when they're clearly designed to necessitate further expenditure after relatively little usage. Disappointing, upsetting, but ultimately, Classic Apple: I am an iFool.

Why Should a World-Class Laptop Suffer from Fraying Power Cable?

    • Written by Ryan P from Miami

Please fix this problem once and for all.

Why put your loyal user who has sold the whole family on Mac and iPhone, through all manner of duct and other taping shrink sleeves, and other time-wasters? Your cable does not perform, and the metal braiding becomes exposed too quickly!

With the largest R&D budget of any company, Apple can do much better with the power cables than to charge another $69 - $79 for a replacement adapter. Like the other side of the transformer that plugs into the wall outlet, at least have a detachable cable the could be replaced at a much lower cost!

Come on Apple, you can do this!

    Electrical tape

    • Written by John K from Tarpon Springs

My cord is 18 months old, and the plastic is disintegrating, leaving the bare wire exposed. I have had to use electrical tape to tape up five places where the plastic no longer covered the wire. Apple employees: read these reviews and do something! You are losing customers over the quality of your cords.

The cords should be recalled and replaced without cost to the customers!

    Apple cables disintegrate

    • Written by William K C from Winter Springs

I have a 40 year old guitar cable that looks better than the 5 year old power adapter cable and I dare say the guitar cable saw much more difficult environments. Why can't a trillion dollar company like apple make a cable?

    Doesn't stay plugged in

    • Written by Jacob H from Mountain view

The magsafe end of the charger has been thinned down and returned to the T connector shape. This means that it is very easy to be rocked up or down and disconnect. Also since the connector is thinner it has extra magnet surface area on the sides of the connector to make the connection strong enough, but this larger area on the sides get's full of little pieces of dust and dirt that keep the charger from connecting. This was not an issue on the older version. The connection on the computer side needs to be deeper or the connector needs to be taller. Also it would likely benefit from being switched back to the L shaped connector so there is less leverage.

    The Terrible Adapter Club

    • Written by David M from Norfolk

Well, it looks like I am joining the masses with complaints about the 85W MagSafe 2 Adapter. My first one frayed after couple of years use, so I bought a replacement which only lasted a few months before it did the same. I now have duct tape around it to hopefully keep my house from burning down, and I am getting ready to once again buy a replacement which will probably do the same things as the previous one. This isn't fair, and should be resolved.

    Fraying

Count me among those with a power adapter that frayed. Again. Apple, please: You are charging a premium for a product that does not deserve it. If this is planned obsolescence, you are gouging us and fomenting resent. You are better than this.
