    Hot to Touch

    • Written by Paul P from Toronto

Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter for my 15" MacBook Pro gets extremely hot to touch and I feel that it's a fire hazard. Also, the cable from the base of charger to connection at the laptop is cracked open so that wires are exposed, possibly from cable being hot & softening due to overheating. I expected this power adapter to be the best in quality from an Apple product, considering what I paid for my laptop.

    Extremely dangerous...

    • Written by Alice J from OLDHAM

I've had my MacBook now for about 3 years (the Mid-2015 pro) and the worst part about it is the chargers. My first one failed on me after about 11 months of usage. I do use it daily, but the fact the plug pins were sparking whenever I even touched them against the socket was crazy, then it just stopped charging at all.
After weeks of complaining (with them telling me they could charge me if they found it was my fault it was sparking?) I finally received a replacement a week inside of my year warranty.

The cable I've had since has literally turned yellow at the end of the wire where its overheated so much its caused wire damage. It's horrendously hot to touch even after just minutes of it being plugged in, particularly the MagSafe adapter part. I keep putting it off to buy a new one because of how expensive they are, plus the fact I've had two now that have been faulty. It's just not good enough. I buy expensive products to use daily and I expect the best quality for that, like any costumer would. Now I've been left with basically an £80 fee just to buy another so it doesn't do permanent damage to my laptop, or me.

    Extremely Disappointed...

    • Written by H L from Hastings

I'll preface this by mentioning that I've been a Mac user for 25 years. The thing I love most about Apple products has (until now) been the durability. I love that my three iPhones I've had over the years have each lasted 4+ years; it's nice to trust a product will last when you're investing good money into it. My iMac desktop from 2001 still works great, but it didn't have wifi connectivity technology, so that is the only reason I made an upgrade to my first MacBook Pro laptop. That laptop still works, but I upgraded to my current MacBook Pro after seven great years of everyday use on my first one. I LOVE my current MacBook Pro! It is reliable and works great for daily writing and graphic design use. But, I digress....

Anyway, for the first time in two and a half decades, I am extremely disappointed with an Apple product! The design and quality (or lack thereof) of this charger is upsetting and not what I've come to expect as a longtime daily user of Apple products. I take excellent care of my computer and accessories, but this is now the SECOND 85W MagSafe2 Power Adapter that has gone bad already since upgrading to this computer. I never had this issue with my previous L-shaped charger for my old MacBook Pro laptop. Now I spend thousands on a wonderful new computer, and I'm spending $80 per year on replacement chargers. That is ridiculous is you ask me. I'm not sure if it's just what the skinny part of the cord is made out of or what, but it gets kind of brittle and starts to fray way too easily. Now I have exposed copper at various places along this charger, so I have to shovel out another $80 to replace it. I am just getting frustrated because I know it will happen again with the next one.

    One for each year?!?!

    • Written by Janet K from Alameda

It’s three years since I bought my Mac and O am on my 3rd adopter. Besides getting too hot while on charge it now doesn’t charge. The magnet holds and sticks but the charger light indicator quits after 5 seconds and only to check it has stopped charging. I have to either have it pushed against something that can keep tight or hold it to charge. What’s annoying is the charger comes with this extra long power adaptor extension which I hardly use so now I have three in very good condition sitting in my cabinet...for what?!?!! Why create such waste?!?! Someone tell me where to donate them and I’ll pass them on.

    Breaks and Unplugs too easily

    • Written by Brigid C from Lakewood

There is no good way to transport this between work and home. Within 3 months of getting my adapter (which I was wrapping around the prongs on the block), the wires frayed and I had to replace it. Since that method didn't work, on the new one I tried wrapping with the over/under technique I use on audio cables that is supposed to prevent damage. That cord only lasted about 6 months. There needs to be a better, stronger design that doesn't break.

It's also annoying that you can only charge on a desk. It comes unplugged way too easily when it is on my lap, which kind of defeats the purpose of a LAPtop.

This is the only laptop that I have ever owned where the charging cable frayed beyond repair. To charge $79.00 to replace the charger with another defective charger that will deteriorate quickly is INSULTING. I will not buy another Mac Book Pro for this reason. I'm irritated and angry. This is terrible customer service for someone who owns the whole line of Apple products.

Cheap non-replaceable cord & poorly designed connector

    • Written by Gregory E from Portland

This cheap and easily broken cord that runs from the power block to the laptop is non-replaceable. The first power adapter I got broke within 6 months with little to no usage. An obvious design flaw by a rookie. The cord clearly should have been removable & replaceable.

I feel Apple should do right with their customers and offer/sell a replacement for the faulty 85W MagSafe 2 power adapter with a "USB-C option" allowing the customer to use any off the shelf "USB-C" cable with a "MagSafe 2" adapter.
But we know they won't. Apple places no value on a user's old hardware.

Also, the poorly designed magnetic connector falls out too easily. The magnet should be stronger.

Selling this should not be legal

    • Written by Rick A from Diemen

This is probably the worst Apple product I've ever had. Just bought my third Magsafe 2 adapter. Surprise surprise, it's still the A1424 model so no design improvements. It breaks faster than the average beer glass in a busy student cafe on a Saturday evening.

    Decent adapter

    • Written by Rita P from West Sacramento

I am purchasing my first replacement Power Adapter after having my Macbook Pro 15-in with Retina Display for 6 years. When I first purchased this device, had some difficulties getting used to how easily the power magnet can detach from the computer. However, it became less of an issue over time.

    Absolute Rubbish

    • Written by Kim K from CONDELL PARK

I'm onto my third charger - seriously, these things are total garbage and Apple should be redesigning them and providing them as free replacements. The cable is incredibly fragile and the heat is ridiculous.
They get so scorching hot and it wouldn't surprise me if one day they cause a fire/death.

Brilliantly designed to make apple more money

My charger stopped working just 1 year in, post the warranty period. It has a very fragile engineering design and this is absolutely not expected from a company which charges you a limb for its macbooks

    Cord Coating Deteriorates Quickly

    • Written by Michelle W from New York

Unfortunately the power cord coating deteriorates rather quickly. It degenerates more quickly if the cord is curved while being used.

Terrible quaility - fire hazard. Break within months.

    • Written by Peter C from Portland

This is easily to the most unreliable poorest quality product Apple sells. Expensive, over-heats, and the cable frays within months. I've purchased three units in the last 20 months. I really don't think they care at all.

    Good product

    • Written by Jonathan H from London

I'm not sure why everybody chooses to complain about these chargers. I have had one for years and it's been perfect. I think you just need to look after it. I purchased a cheaper one off Amazon and when I put it in my MacBook it produced a big spark so decided to continue ordering the official ones, which are good quality.

    Worst Apple Product ever

    • Written by John H from Montrose

I love my MacBook. My Watch. My iPhone. My iPad. Really frustrated and disappointed in this power adapter. Less than two years old. And the cable is worn through at the MacBook side and at the plug side. It gets nothing but normal use. It's like an unavoidable £40 a year tax! Not good.

Poor insulation at supply strain relief -- premature failure

    • Written by Walter R from Jasper

Poor insulation on the power cord coming from the power supply causes premature failure. The unit is not easily field repairable resulting in the need to scrap the entire power supply. This is ecologically and economically unsound practices. It increases Apple's Carbon Footprint which is not an acceptable behavior for a California Company. By designing a component which should last decades with a single point of premature failure contributes waste to the eco-system and requires unnecessary carbon wasting processes to be repeated. Apple -- shame on you.

    85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter

    • Written by Anita C from Park City

I am now purchasing the 3rd of these adapters. They just do not last. Poor design and the wire breaks to easily. What can we do. Nothing but put our more money after paying 3,500 for a computer.

Would give it zero stars if I could

    • Written by Tim R from Thamesford

Sick of buying these at $100 per only to have the cord fray and fall apart after a year. I could sort of understand if I carried my laptop around for work etc, but it literally never leaves the house / my desk. Poorest quality Apple product there is in my opinion. Come on Apple, we expect more from your company.
