    Rotting Away

    • Written by Karen B from Austin

The 'T' design does this cord no favors. I hope your desk isn't in a corner because the cord is just gonna bend and get torn up. Started ripping and fraying the first month I owned it.
Managed to put a 'bandaid' on it with some electrical tape then tried a more permanent solution with some sugru rubber putty. Sadly the issue persisted and the tear would just spread no matter how much I covered.

Now I've noticed the rubber cover is cracked all over the cord. It's not just from stress or wear and tear. I got a replacement and set this one aside as a backup. Pulled it out the other day so I could have a home unit and take my usual cord to work. The rubber is literally just aged and is rotting off the electrical cable.

Poor design, poor material, poor product.

    Doesn't last

    • Written by Anna J from Wanganui

I think it may be time for Apple to redesign this power adapter. This will be my third one in 5 years which actually works out to last about 2 years.
It gets extremely hot and also has several weak points. No matter how hard you try to look after the adapter it keeps breaking. I would however recommend buy apple over a second party adapter.

    Product Fail

    • Written by Keith R from baltimore

The insulation broke apart right by the connector. Good thing a replacement only costs $79. Come on Apple. Build these things to withstand simple day-to-day usage.

This will be my third charger. They all fail. Too hot / Too flimsy. Apple just expects people to keep buying a product clearly unfit for purpose. Very dissatisfied and disappointed.

The thin wire is too weak

    • Written by Marie-Helene L from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu

The power adapter is overall dependable... if the thin wire is in good shape. I travel a lot with my computer and I have to carry it and wrap the wire around the charger a lot, and by doing this, the rubber envelope is tearing up and I had to add some tape to avoid the wires to protrude. Moreover, I have to buy a power adapter each year or 18 months because the wires break and cannot carry electric power to recharge the computer. Finally, is it possible to sell only the power adapter with the thin wire? The thick wire is highly dependable and has a long duration; however, selling only the thin one would be less expensive to replace, and there would be less waste.

    Appalling failure rate

    • Written by Bodhisatva B from Sydney

I've owned a number of MBPs over the past couple of years. My Magsafe (1) charger for my MBP 2012 lasted forever till the cable frayed through repeated flexing. Fair enough. Got a replacement and it has been perfect.

My charger for the MBP 2014 15" retina died within 2 years. No cable damage or wear and tear. Just failed. Got a replacement, and it just failed today. I'm really surprised at the failure rate of these chargers. At $110 a pop, they're not cheap. My other laptops that get used on a regular basis, and go through similar "wear and tear" have yet to fail.

I really think a good hard look needs to be taken at the QC process being employed.

    Poor Design

    • Written by A T S from Auckland

The cable that runs from the adapter to the mac is prone to breaking where the cable meets the bulky adapter, it's just too weak and cannot be replaced without buying an entirely new unit. Ironically the cable that plugs into the power supply can be replaced but it's built like a tank. Stunningly poor design from Apple, makes me wonder if it's intentionally bad so as to sell more overpriced adapters.
Magnetic connector is an excellent feature though.

    This adapter works as designed

    • Written by Daniel V from Arlington

I’ve been using this adapter on my late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina for over 4 years. I generally don’t have it plugged in when using on my lap as the battery life is sufficient. However, when I do occasionally have it plugged in while on my lap, I have not experienced any instances of it getting knocked out of the socket. The only times that it has come unplugged is if the cord gets caught on something like the arm of a chair when I try to move and this is by design. The magnet is sufficiently strong enough for me to be able to plug it in in the dark.

    Work as expected

    • Written by Wen Hao C from San Francisco

You might want to just buy the 85W one even if you have a Macbook Air, as it is fine to use a higher rated power supply than the original unit (e.g. 65W or 45W)

    Not Cheap - NOT SAFE

    • Written by Tamerea F from Goombungee

I just bought my 3rd Charger for a late 2013 MBP. The first 2 frayed and exposed wires and were covered under warrrenty. This one is not. It gets so hot, it actually burned my hand when I picked it up, it also caused the MBP to get super hot while charging.

I hope that the new MBP chargers last a little longer.

I had my Macbook Pro Retina a couple of years back and started to charge it normally using the Magsafe 2. Failed on me once so I bought another one. I thought it could be something I did to the first Magsafe so I took care of the new every now and then. Then one morning it failed on me again after finding out it could not charge my Mac for about a year of usage. Unbelievable. If it was cheap, I would definitely understand but this is a premium price for a lousy built quality power adapter. Come on Apple, seriously?

    Poor build quality

    • Written by Shreyash K from Mumbai

Absolutely hate this charger. My fourth charger in four years. So stupid of you for making such a poor quality charger. Magsafe 2 is the worst, I had to keep my charger at an certain angle for last few days to let my laptop charge and then it just stopped working. I am a loyal Apple user with an iMac, 2 Macbook pro's, iphone and an ipad. The products works fine but the accessory quality is too poor which is really annoying after a point of time. HATE THIS !!

    Dangerous and poor quality.

    • Written by Linby B from Green Bay

I have gone through four chargers in my three years of having my laptop. 320$ Worth of chargers with a laptop i have had for only three years. That is absolutely ridiculous. ALSO, I had my laptop charging on my bed overnight with the block next to me, woke up with a blistered burn on my arm. Maybe that was my fault but these chargers get DANGEROUSLY hot and shouldnt be. Apple needs to step up their game and focus on the more important things rather then making iphone X's. I mean, how hard would it be to make a better quality charger...?

As I write this, I'm on the phone with Apple, telling them that this is the second time my power adapter has given up on me. I've already changed it once in January due to the same reason, now it's December and it died again. It's not a fuse issue, the technicians at this authorised service centre assures me, so I'm assuring you that the build quality for this is terrible. I do not overcharge my MBP, always plugging it in and out between 20% and 80% to prolong battery life. All I can say is go find another 3rd party adapter of better quality to save you this headache.
