    Realistic expectations

    • Written by Duncan M from Hamden

Used a lot of these drives over the years. They're no less reliable than any other slot loader, in my experience. I have had issues in the past when drives would need to be periodically disconnected and reconnected to a different USB port, but that hasn't happened in years now. I've dropped one a few times and never had any problems from it. They can burn out after a couple of years, they are, after all, mechanical devices and moving parts wear out, but I feel they've been more durable than other drives I've owned. Don't really kniow what all the hate is about in the other reviews. Knee-jerk reactions I guess.

Do not waste your money & time & grief!

    • Written by Gabrielle S from Carrollton

I am so disappointed in Apple for selling me this CD/DVD reader that doesn't work, nor do they don't stand behind it. Not only have I wasted the full price of $80 plus tax, but I've wasted so much time trying to make it work w/Apple's help too. I also now have to figure out a way to get the disk out of the reader. The disk has photos that are not on any other device. So I'm going to have to break it open somehow and I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and that can end up hurting my hands and wrists. I really wish I didn't have to resort to bad-mouthing the product and all here. But the warranty was no help and this is clearly a manufacturing defect. I think Apple is making enough profit to do better...This is a clear failure in customer service. Just look at all the bad reviews of this product. I'm sure the few good ones are written when they first got this item. It worked for the first two times. Apple, shame on you for selling this. I wish I never bought it. I only gave a star because I had to.

    Usb Superdrive

    • Written by Jesse K from hanford

After all the awful reviews I decided to not buy this item. I expected it not to work! But I gotta gift card and decided to take my chances. Mine works fine. I haven't burned any cds or dvd yet. It didn't play the first two movies I put in but now it works great. It is worth it if you have a lot of dvds and cds. With a newer Mac its probably better. Theres no eject button that's my only problem , but there are several ways of doing that.

Crapped out on me after a couple of years. When I put a disc in, nothing happens. Very frustrating. I should have come and read the reviews here before purchasing.

    Total Rubbish

    • Written by Simon P from Camberley

I bought this product quite a while ago to go with my MacBook Pro 2015" (purchased both in late 2015 or early 2016 ish) I have used the Superdrive literally a handful of times (maybe 5-6 times) since I bought it and quickly realised that my fears of the lack of drive on my MacBook Pro were unfounded and I actually did not need it really. So therefore I put it back in it's box and original packaging in my office draw for the last 2 years almost! I have come to use it randomly today to look at a medical CD I was given, and the whole drive no longer works! Wont accept discs despite powering up. I haven't even touched it for almost 2 years, and it has been safely away in its own drawer, yet no longer works, utter rubbish!

    Worthless & Unreliable

    • Written by Guillermo A from Miami

Got new Apple USB SuperDrive as a gift 5 months ago. The product is unreliable as it will not read basic DVDs, CDs, etc. I successfully used the Superdrive 3 times but always had problems ejecting discs and the drive itself from my MacBook Pro. Thereafter the product has not worked again, now not even accepting discs into the drive itself. Not the quality one would expect from Apple. Highly disappointing especially given the cost of this product. Do not buy!

Not comatable with latest MacBook Pro (even via an adaptor).

    • Written by Peter M from BRIDLINGTON

Luckily I borrowed this from my son. As far as I know, he has not had any issues with it.
It will not work with my 2018 MacBook Pro.
I have an external TYPE-C MULTI-PORT USB adaptor (powered via the MacBook), I get a message along these lines "That the SuperDrive needs it's own power supply". It has no option for it's own power supply!
So I then used an older external, with its own power supply USB adaptor (via the TYPE-C MULTI-PORT USB, for obvious reasons), I still get the same message.

So it looks as though there is no chance of working with DVD's etc on the latest MacBooks.

Unreliable, incompatible and way overpriced. Remove the logo and i would mistake it for some $2 gimmicky DVD drive. If the SuperDrive refuses to eject an important CD then god help you because Apple certainly will not or rather it cannot due to the design its flawed design.

Works once or twice a year

    • Written by Robert H from Saint Paul

Purchased my USB SuperDrive along with my MacBook Pro in 2013. It worked ok for the first two years then started failing to load or read. Success ratio is that it works about once in 30 to 40 times. Tried on a brand new iMac with no success. Right now, it's a square paper weight.

Awful - great example of how things get effed up when tech fails

    • Written by Dajana C from Irvine

First thing I did after buying it was placing a CD inside it. It didn’t even manage tkread it. But the worst part is that the disc got stuck. You cannot eject it - there are no buttons. And mechanical force also isn’t an option because the slot is super thin. I saw many others having the same problem on the forums. The solutions offered don’t help . Nothing works. It wont get out. Awful product

    Excellent product!

    • Written by Liz A from Ottawa

I have read many reviews saying this drive is no good. Hmm, I have had mine since January of 2015 and have ripped literally thousands of CDs and DVDs to my computer, not to mention burning a rather large number for the days I was still using CDs in my cars. I have never had a failure despite the fact I dropped this drive numerous times (I am rather clumsy at times!). Never has it produced a bad disc or failed to read a disc unless it was seriously geezed. I do not see why all the poor reviews. Perhaps your system is not up to snuff, or you are using cheap apps to rip and/or burn discs??? As the old saying goes... Corn goes in, corn comes out. Go home Apple haters. God bless!

    Poor quality product

    • Written by Tami H from Cypress

My SuperDrive hasn't even been used that much since purchase, the last couple of nights I wanted to watch some brand new DVDs of educational videos and a miniseries that is available via downloading or streaming. The drive is not reading the discs and ejecting them. Ridiculous performance considering the number of times it's been used during my ownership of the device. This is the king of Apple DUDs. Does anyone know if there is a reliable third party compatible DVD player/burner?

This drive needs a manual eject

    • Written by KATHARINE S from New York

I am trying to access material archived on CDs/DVDs, and trying to get discs to eject is a feat. It's ridiculous how much time this takes. If the disc isn't reading correctly the software eject messages don't get through. Software only solutions are NOT adequate. It's a needless, avoidable problem. Please redesign and include a manual eject.

    No problems so far

    • Written by Jonathan D from Chico

I've had my Superdrive for a few weeks, and I will gladly change my review if I feel it warrants it. But I have not experienced several issues others are having. One of the common things I've seen in some reviews is the inability to get the disc out of the drive. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro, and the unit has worked flawlessly. I put in a disc and it reads it pretty fast, compared to a third party one I used previously which takes 20 seconds or more to start reading the disc. It opened up itunes very quickly upon reading the music disc.

I eject the disc by highlighting it on the desktop and pushing the typical "Command-E" input. The disc ejects right away every time, within a second or two.

I put in a DVD and it also started up very quickly and had no issues in watching the film.

I haven't tried burning a disc yet, but I don't have any Mac software for doing that as my burning disc programs I prefer are PC only.

Honestly, I'm wondering if people are just having bad luck with trying to use this on older Macs or just Macs that are running too slow because of issues brought on by the user. I don't intend to blame the user necessarily since every situation is different, but it's no out of the realm of possibility. Point is, this product seems to function at a high level of quality for me that I was hoping for from Apple. Just take it as one person's good fortune, I guess.

    Not worth the money

    • Written by Benjamin H from Watchet

Appears to work. However, you move it whilst it is in use it makes horrible noises and stops working. Unfortunately it comes with a USB end and not a USB C. So after spending a fortune on the drive I need to spend another part of £20 just so I can content it to my Mac. I wish I done some more research and looked at other drives. I love my apple products however, this is a real disappointment.

    Works well for me!

    • Written by Tom K from San Rafael

I'm not certain why all the hate toward the Apple Superdrive; it works well for me! If you insert a CD it does, indeed, recognize the song and artist. The drive is fast, quiet and does what it needs to as far as CD and DVD importing and burning. I don't do fancy program, software stuff as that's not why I got the drive for my MacBook Air. I was tired of using my old HP with Microsoft simply to import movies and songs to my Mac. So the Apple Superdrive was the answer. It is pricy at $79 and I think Apple would do well for its consumers to sell it at $59. But if you want and need an external drive--get it.

    • Written by Krystin L from Courtland

this was ridiculously expensive for the little it does. It never recognizes anything, and my dvds have gotten stuck countless times and since (of course) it doesnt have an external eject button, it takes hours to get your computer to finally recognize the device in order to eject the dvd!
