    The keyboard disconnects too frequently

There are several youtubers that report the same issue aand there’s no support or good solution. This is very furstrating

    Think About Before You Buy

This has to be the most frustrating key board ever made. You have jiggle it around, disconnect the iPad from the keyboard and then try to get it to reconnect and pray that it will finally connect and work with the iPad, sometimes it just will not connect. Drives me nuts.

Good at first, evolves to unusable

For the first two months I had it, the Smart Keyboard worked great. It had a few times a day where I and to disconnect and that worked fine, however over time I noticed that using it, my iPad battery lasts 6 hours instead of the regular 10 hours.

Now 3 months in, its barely usable anymore! I have to reconnect it multiple times every time I try to type, keyboard shortcuts don’t work anymore, and it hogs up most of the battery life. Especially when using it with Apple Pencil.

Much Happier With Apple Smart Keyboard Than With Logitech Slim Combo

I've now had my Apple Smart Keyboard for my iPad Pro 10.5 for a week and have been using it with none of the issues many users have reported -- connection has been excellent, keyboard sits flat, smart cover closes down my iPad.

I initially purchased the Logitech Slim Combo in an effort to save a little money -- it and the Apple keyboard were both on sale at Best Buy & the Logitech was about $45 cheaper. After using the Logitech for less than an hour I knew it would not suit my needs.

Logitech Cons: I do a lot of work on the iPad Pro while sitting in my recliner, with the iPad sitting on a lap desk. The Logitech has a palm rest in front of the keyboard, which causes the screen to sit back further (I wear prescription reading glasses & this resulted in blurred vision, and pulling the keyboard forward more caused the typing surface to bounce as the front was no longer sitting on the lap desk), and also caused a very unnatural and uncomfortable typing position. Hard plastic keys are not comfortable to type on. No forward-delete key. I took it back and purchased the Apple Smart Keyboard.

Logitech Pros: Backlit keyboard, top row of function keys -- I especially liked the volume buttons as I stream a lot on my iPad and frequently need to adjust the volume. Provides a smart cover -- as well as back cover -- and seems well built for drop protection.

The Apple keyboard is far superior is many ways.

Apple Pros: No palm rest in front of keyboard, so typing position is much more comfortable when it sits on my lap desk -- and my visiion is not blurred as it was with the Logitech. Cloth covering on keys is more comfortable and does not allow debris to get trapped around keys -- just blow or wipe off. While there is not a row of funtion keys, many of the Mac function shortcuts are usable with the Smart Keyboard -- you just have to look at some YouTube videos that show them as Apple, for reasons unknown, does not provide that info. The connection magnets are strong and keep the iPad securely in place. The Smart Cover feature turns off the iPad and brings up the log-in screen when it's opened.

Apple Cons: No back cover -- I never had an Apple Smart Cover on my previous iPads (always used Targus case), so never had the back cover Apple used to make, but why on earth would they not make that cover for the Smart Keyboard I do not know. I did purchase from Amazon the Khomo back cover, which has a grey that matches the keyboard, for around $12, and it has a very good fit -- although I don't think it, combined with the Keyboard cover would withstand a drop of more than a few inches. No row of function keys -- especially miss the volume buttons. No forward-delete key. Apple does not provide Owner Manual instructions describing the keyboard's functions -- they could at least refer owners to a video tutorial on their website. For those unfamiliar with the Mac shortcuts, as I am as I never use them on my MacBook Pro, I would never have known I could use any of them on my iPad with this keyboard had I not found a YouTube video when looking at reviews of this keyboard. HINT: Hit the Command key when you're using an app and it brings up a window showing the function keys available for use within that app.

For now I'm giving a rating of 4 stars, simply because I do not know what longer-term use problems may arise -- will the cloth covered keys begin to wear to the point of being un-usable, will I begin to have connection problems, or any of the other issues for which Apple now offers extended warranty coverage (initial warranty is for one year -- the extended warranty adds an additional two years of coverge).

Overall, I am very happy with the Apple Smart Keyboard and would recommend it over the Logitech for sure. I have used it to type this review and my typing speed and accuracy match that of my MacBook Pro -- I'm pretty fast and usually make no more than a couple of errors.

    OK, so some thoughts.

The keyboard is great. Using it for a bit and it’s so nice for work on a plane. Like the feel....Yama Yama Yama and all that.

    For the complains.

It’s not back lit. So you iPad battery does not die.
No back protection, seriously? It’s a tool, who cares if it gets a scratch.
Like anything it may need some breaking to lay flat.

The complaints? Ridiculously first world problems.

    DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

My team bought 3 of these along with 3 x 12.9' Pro' and all 3 Smart Keyboards have stopped working after 1.5 years. If it is only a short term solution perhaps the $245 price should be half that. First apple product that has failed in my eyes.

    Amazing design and product

Keyboard does exactly what its designed for... to be a functioning ultra slim ultra portable keyboard and cover in one.
    5 stars.. 2 thumbs up.
My advice... buy the apple leather sleeve and pencil too. The leather sleeve provides the slimmest portable protection, and looks and feels spectacular. This is why you have an iPad Pro and not a laptop... slim down the baggage.

    Works...until it doesn’t.

Good keyboard for the first few months and then—as so many other reviewers have noted—the thing is a frustrating, malfunctioning piece of junk. I thought it was a software glitch when my keyboard stopped working on the Notes App but then noticed it would stop working universally. I did the same thing many reviewers here did: disconnect and reconnect, reboot, etc. You can get it to work again but only temporarily. I’m a lifelong Apple fan but is it my imagination or is their software and hardware becoming less reliable, more buggy, cheaper-made, run-of-the-mill stuff? The early laptops and desktops were phenomenally bug free and reliable. Now most of my Apple products inevitably crash on a regular basis. It’s disappointing!

Different sizing of new Smart Keyboard

Very surprised and disappointed to find that the new Smart Keyboard for the new iPad Pro 10.5 is not compatable with the integrated covers from the original version and sits proud of the previous iPad Pro rather than flush. The magnetic fixing strip is wider and so does not fit in. Keyboard also slightly wider and so does not fit flush with the edge of the iPad. This is the third keyboard I have had in two years, they just dont seem robust enough for daily use. Not at all clear from the apple website that there is a size different.

    Great keyboard

I almost didn't get this keyboard because of the reviews. But I had a business trip coming up and had to get a keyboard last minute. The keyboard worked wonderfully for my trip. I was surprised how comfortable it feels given that it's a smaller form size. I'm a Systems Administrator and typing on a pc is all I do. I type surprisingly fast and accurate using the smart keyboard, with very little mistakes. I also like how it folds up nicely over the ipad's screen, and folds backward nicely when I want to just use the ipad like a tablet. This keyboard tipped the scale when I was choosing an ipad pro vs surface pro, and I'm very happy to have made the choice to go with ipad pro with smart keyboard. Highly recommended...or you should at least try it before being turned off by other negative reviews.

Fair assessment of Apple iPad Pro keyboard

Read all the negative comments before purchasing the keyboard. Also tested the keyboard in several stores. Overall, this is the best alternative on the market as far as I can determine from comparisons with the Logitech Slim Keyboard and several Bluetooth alternatives.

First, the Smart Connector works. It remains connected better than the Logitech’s ribbon connector, and there’s no loss of connectivity that I’ve experienced with Bluetooth keyboards.

Second, the keyboard feels almost as good as my MacBook Air keyboard. It’s very responsive.

Third, the materials used are first class. I like the fabric covering that provides some texture to the keys while protecting the mechanics from spilled liquids.

Fourth, the iPad angle is fixed in a good position but less flexible than some others. I find typing with the keyboard on my desk or lap to be equally satisfactory.

Downsides - lack of illuminated keys for use in poor light situations. However, Apple could fix this shortcoming with a software modification to display an entered keystroke by temporarily showing the key entered on the iPad screen. Tactile feedback sounds could also be useful as an option. The retail price is about $60 too high so I bought mine used on eBay for around $100. It’s worth that because of the valued functionality that it brings to my iPad Pro 10.5.

does not hold up to normal use

I am on my second apple keyboard. This keyboard works great when it works but does not hold up to normal use. I have to keep pulling the keyboard away from the iPad to get it to reconnect, but often It take 3 or 4 attempts. I think that the connectors to the iPad wear out too quickly.

The design is great but realistically if you use it normally the keyboard will stop working well within 6 to 12 months.

Was a great keyboard - until iOS 11.xx

I purchased this smart keyboard about 9 months ago, and loved it....particularly because it was easy to use to type in several languages. Then I upgraded my iPad to iOS 11 - and the thing went to heck. It works only intermittently, and sometimes not at all. It has become completely unreliable, which is a shame, because I travel a lot and I loved the fact that here was a keyboard that was easy to type on quickly, and in small spaces, even on an airplane. I loved that the keyboard was part of the cover and the stand. But now - it’s almost useless. I have cleaned the contacts, cleaned the keyboard, rebooted umpteen times, tried chatting with Apple - to no avail. Most things I see online suggest it’s a bug in the updated iOS....so I hope Apple fixes the problem. Until then, I am not sure I would recommend to anyone that they should spend $159 for this thing.

Loved my keyboard until it packed up...

Great product but extremely expensive as once the 1 year warranty is over, the keyboard only works intermittently, and sometimes wont work at all.
I have tried all the suggested fixes and the keyboard has not been damaged and has been treated carefully.
My keyboard is just under two year old and with careful use I would expect it to have a much longer life!

    Broken After Six Months

The title says it all. I bought this at the same time as buying my iPad Pro, and the keyboard broke after six months. Was a total waste of money. The iPad wouldn't even detect it anymore. No drops or damage, either - it just up and died on its own, and as I was past the return date, the only thing Apple suggested was that I buy a new one.

Avoid this and go third-party if you really want a keyboard. This one just isn't any good.

    Intermittent connectivity overshadows other features

The product is great when it comes to size (manages a nice balance of being big enough to feel like a full keyboard while also being slim and portable) and comfort (keys are comfortable to the touch and don't feel like I am straining as with other keyboards).

However, the keyboard works only intermittently and I'm constantly having to stop what I'm doing to reconnect it to the iPad. This only gets worse if you're not on a perfectly flat surface (i.e. if you're trying to type away from your desk on you lap or outdoors, etc) Very disappointed with the functionality and connectivity problems of the keyboard. I would not buy this again.

Disregard the other reviews, this is a perfect keyboard!

I spent a lot of time shuffling through reviews to find the best keyboard for my iPad pro and this one works amazingly. A lot of the reviews say that it malfunctions, but I've had mine for months and nothing has happened so I say to disregard those reviews. It's lightweight, portable, AND detachable so you can just easily take it off if you don't want to deal with it. If I had one complaint, it would be that you can only use a specific iPad case with the keyboard. Personally, I would feel more comfortable having my iPad in a drop-proof case like an Otterbox, but it's not that big of a deal. I just carry my iPad in a sleeve.

    Slim low profile

I've owned other keyboard cases in the past with older iPads and they have provided much more comprehensive protection than this smart keyboard does. You definitely need the compatible case to go on the actual iPad. Other than that it words perfectly! It's almost like having my MacBook with me without the bulk. I wish there was an option for a lighted keyboard.

    Pros:
    -Slim
    -works perfectly
    -activates almost instantly when docking.

    Cons'
    -No protection for the iPad
    - when in my work bag the keyboard tends to disconnect from the iPad
    - no lighted keyboard
