  • Overview

LaCie's d2 hard drive helps you get the job done faster with dual Thunderbolt 2, USB 3.0 interfaces, and a 7200 RPM hard disk. And it makes your work space even more comfortable thanks to an innovative, all-aluminium unibody design that helps keep vibration and operating noise remarkably low.

    Versatility for professional environments

Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports let you daisy chain up to six devices to a single Thunderbolt port on your Mac. This means that you can connect up to five LaCie d2 drives plus a 4K display to an iMac Thunderbolt 2 port, giving you impressive scalability and convenience for 4K or other workflows. And since USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2 are backward compatible, you always get the fastest speeds your computer allows.

    Advanced design and enhanced durability

In the process of redesigning the d2 drive, LaCie focused relentlessly on reliability and usability for professionals. The unibody enclosure is forged from a single sheet of aluminium, providing uncommon rigidity. It also draws heat away from the hard disk, eliminating the need for a fan, improving the lifespan of components and delivering ultra-quiet operation.

    Maximum value

The LaCie d2 includes everything professionals need for secure backup: a backup software suite and compatibility with Time Machine and Windows Backup. It also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you password-protect volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.

    Energy efficiency

For Thunderbolt connections, save energy by pressing the power button to spin down disks without interrupting daisy chain transfers. For USB connections, the disk spins down automatically when the host operating system goes to sleep.

    Highlights

Professional speeds of up to 220 MB/s

USB 3.0 and dual Thunderbolt 2 ports for universal compatibility

Aluminium unibody for reduced noise and fan-free cooling effectively draws heat away from the drive

A cushioning base and vibration-absorbing hard disk mounts greatly reduce vibration

Integrated cable management helps prevent accidental disconnection of interface or power cables

Time Machine compatibility along with an included backup software suite

Optional LaCie d2 SSD upgrade (sold separately) multiplies speeds by a factor of five

    Design by Neil Poulton

    Did You Notice?

Unibody aluminium design helps significantly reduce noise and more rapidly dissipate heat.

I then move data to it and the transfer rate was better than expected. The stand is well made and support the drive properly. The only thing that prevented me to give this drive a 5 start rating is the big blue light on the front of the drive. The blue light is flashing to shown data transfer and activities which is fine but it is so big that when watching a video or movie from the drive the light flashing is annoying. I had to put a tape over to hide the stroboscopic effect.

      Not for everyone!

I bought this drive for storing and working with video files and I bought a USB3 drive for backing up this drive and my internal drive. Just for yucks I ran many tests to determine how much faster the Thunderbolt drive is over the USB3. Results: not much faster. Maybe 2-3% faster. WHAT??? But I thought Thunderbolt 2 is supposed to be 2 to 4 times faster than USB3. It is... IF YOU HAVE SSD DRIVES ON BOTH ENDS! (or in some cases, fusion drives on both ends if you are utilizing the ssd part of the fusion drive 100%, which will be hard to do with large video files in the newer Apple fusion drives that have reduced the amount of ssd in the drive). This I learned direct from LaCie technical support when I thought my Thunderbolt drive must be malfunctioning. Apple makes no mention anywhere that high speed ssd is needed for Thunderbolt. Very deceiving Apple! Buy USB3 unless you have ssd on BOTH ends! Sorry LaCie, not a bad product so far, but you make no mention on your website either about this limitation. One star so others will read this and be informed.

They seem to be reliable and perform better than G-Drive's equivalent offering for $379. Plus you get two Thunderbolt 2 ports on these drives to allow for daisy chaining. Definitely my new go-to primary drive for video production projects.

I know the s I bought a 5K iMac With a 3TB hybrid drive and the 6TB version of this drive to back it up. It is quiet and fast and after one week crashed hard. I know the sound a drive makes when it crashes and this made it. I'm not totally happy with LaCie's customer support either, but I won't get into that. As another reviewer said, I hate giving bad reviews. But in this case, I have no choice. If you need a large storage tank for backups, get something else.

      Lousy Drive
