  • Overview

Completely redesigned, LaCie's 2big hard drive delivers versatility and reliability along with the performance of Thunderbolt 2 technology and hardware RAID. Now the interface is no longer a performance bottleneck, thanks to the Thunderbolt 2 I/O - which gets peak speeds of 420 MB/s out of the hard disks.

With this kind of speed, videographers can edit multiple 2K uncompressed 10-bit streams or play back compressed 4K video. Digital photographers can browse a massive RAW photo library with zero lag. And, thanks to support for DisplayPort 1.2, it's possible to daisy chain higher-resolution displays such as 4K monitors.

Do not buy. Drives eject every time computer goes to sleep.

I purchased a new 5k iMac and two of these drives to do photo work. Every time the iMac goes to sleep both drives eject and the whole system gets hosed. Google I purchased a new 5k iMac and two of these drives to do photo work. Every time the iMac goes to sleep both drives eject and the whole system gets hosed. Google drive unlinks. Dropbox unlinks. Time machine throws up failed backup errors. The only recovery option is to unplug the thunderbolt cable, plug it back in (rather awkward on an iMac), wait for the drives to mount and then manually quit and restart Google Drive and Dropbox. In short it is actually easier to just reboot the entire box whenever the computer goes to sleep. I have no doubt that Apple or Lacie will fix this eventually but I find it infuriating that Apple is selling these in the Apple store when they clearly do not work on brand new hardware.

      So Far So Good!!

In raid 1 it is reasonably fast and dead quiet in use, which is very important to me as it is in my listening room, not 10 feet from my listening position. I've not had too much luck with LaCie products before, but I'm very happy so far. This one just oozes quality. Only one gotcha, manual and raid monitoring software was not included in the package, and when I tried to down load it from the LaCie website, it was down. About an hour after my first attempt to get the software/manual the website was back up.

      DONT BUY

Drive randomly goes to sleep and takes ages booting back up. Also does often not mount after the computer was in sleep. Complete garbage.

The 6 TB version has two 3tb Seagate hard drive that are if not the worst, among the worst failure rates in the industry. My original drives have failed less then 2 years. You can google search for the model ST3000DM001 Seagate. The drive has an extreme failure rate. This same drive caused Apple to replace a lot drive in prior year iMacs. I'm not saying not buy to the 2 Big Thunderbolt 2, cause its plenty fast for hd video editing on FCPX, just stay away from the 6 TB version.
