  • Overview

LaCie’s Rugged RAID Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 mobile hard drive makes your data more portable than ever, ensuring that your projects aren’t delayed by external drive/computer incompatibility. With both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports, you don’t have to compromise between durability, mobility and speed. And because USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, you can connect it to any standard computer. The integrated Thunderbolt cable also stows away neatly when not in use, so you’ll never lose it.

    Game-changing speed

The Rugged delivers transfer speeds of up to 240MB/s, so you can back up and transfer mountains of data in a fraction of the time. Leave it in RAID 0 (striped mode) to maximise speed and capacity. Or choose RAID 1 (mirrored mode), where your data is duplicated across both internal hard drives - so even if a drive fails in the field, your files remain completely accessible.

    All-terrain data protection

The Rugged will protect your data in non-operating mode from accidental drops of up to 1.5 meters. With an IP-54 rating for data security against dust and water splashing, you can be confident that your data will remain accessible.

    Prevent unauthorised access

Protect your data with LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you password-protect the entire drive or only certain volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.

    True mobility

With 4TB of capacity, the LaCie offers massive amounts of storage to carry all the content needed for all of your projects. Store more photos, footage and video in the field with this ultimate on-the-go solution.

Lacie would not help, even though they have a service that for $5 a year, they will cover recovery. When I registered the drive for warranty, there was no notification that they had such a plan. Very deceptive. Also on Amazon, there are a number of purchases with the same issue of crashing prematurely. I would not recommend using LaCie. If you must have it, then at least search their web site and purchase their recovery insurance, or buy another hard drive to back up their harddrive. Pretty sad experience!!!

      Peace of mind

I don't normally write reviews but as the previous review was not even for this product I felt compelled to write another review. This LaCie Rugged is a RAID dr I don't normally write reviews but as the previous review was not even for this product I felt compelled to write another review. This LaCie Rugged is a RAID drive, and as such, offers peace of mind for those users like myself who want to set up a Mirrored RAID while travelling. I have used LaCie Rugged drives since they were first launched and always had good service from the drives. All drives fail so any reviewer who writes a poor review because their drive has failed is not offering useful feedback. This drive however offers the peace of mind that only a Mirrored RAID can offer, in that one drive can fail and the other has its back. It has a fast built in Thunderbolt lead and an additional USB 3 port and can be switched from RAID 0 to Raid 1 in a couple of minutes. The name Rugged refers to more than just the rubber jacket it wears - it's construction allows for a serious knock without detriment to the enclosed drives. My only criticism is that I would recommend LaCie ships this drive with RAID 1 (Safe or Mirrored mode) as the default.

      An external power supply, REALLY?

I I just upgraded from the 2TB version because, as a photographer who carries her entire photo archive with her, I ran out of portable storage and needed more. I was a bit stunned to discover that the 4TB external hard-drive does NOT function without being plugged into a power source. SERIOUSLY? In addition, the cord is SO SHORT, I need an extension cord to access a power supply unless I plan to sit on the floor and work next to an outlet. In this age of living untethered and needing to carry LESS, I now have to carry the LaCie power cord AND an extension cord in my traveling kit. Glad to have the extra space, but THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED at the necessary peripherals that go along with the upgrade.

      Don’t Buy This Product

If you want a place to back up fils and not access them, maybe, but the design of the drive means it heats up to a degree that it becomes incredibly hot. I would not feel confortable leaving files writing on this disk when I am not there to supervise it.

      Best portable Hard drive ever

This is the best portable Hard drive I have ever used. Stable, easy to set up and it doesn't switch off if it is knocked. Well worth the money.
