  • Overview

PROMISE’s Apollo is a small, quiet appliance that works with the Apollo Cloud companion app to easily manage storing data from your Mac, iPhone or iPad. Store, access, share and manage records, photos and videos from anywhere, using any device* with complete privacy and security — and no recurring fees. Excellent for your family, small business, home office or small departmental group. Invite members into your trusted circle to use your Apollo. Each member gets his or her own private space and sharing control.

Easy to set up and use from anywhere

You don’t need to understand networking or how to hook up a computer to use Apollo. Just plug Apollo into your Internet-enabled router, start up the intuitive Apollo Cloud app downloaded from the App Store on your Mac, iPhone or iPad, register your Apollo, and start storing and sharing from anywhere.

    Access personal data from anywhere

You and members of your trusted circle can store content in and access each of your own private spaces on Apollo from anywhere over the web. Apollo supports up to 10 individual users in total from a single device.

Auto upload Camera Rolls and stream videos

Each member can choose to automatically upload new content from their Camera Roll from all their iOS devices. They can also smoothly play back videos and other media content.

    Private space and sharing control

You and each person in your trusted circle get your own private storage space on Apollo and can independently control what you want to share and with whom. You can share selected content with non-members as well, just as in your Cloud accounts. Member quota management also lets you assign different amounts of storage space to each member as needed.

Private and secure with easy backup and restore

Rest easy knowing that all your data is stored safely and securely on your Apollo. In addition, all your access transactions over the web are encrypted. There’s also support for Time Machine, allowing automatic wireless backups. You can backup your Apollo to an external USB drive and restore to Apollo — all with a few taps on your Mac or iOS device.

    Social elements

Friends and family can comment on and discuss shared files, photos and videos within an entirely private environment.

    Streamlined, quiet and sturdy design

The Promise Apollo Personal Cloud Storage is an unusual device. It's not a NAS drive and it's not an external USB drive— it's something in-between. It does take a little getting used to, but setup is so simple and syncing so flawless I can explore its idiosyncracies when convenient, not while under pressure to get it up and running. UPDATE to information in earlier reviews: First, shortly after launch, firmware and OS updates made the Apollo Cloud compatible with Time Machine. Second, the Apollo Cloud has a USB port meant specifically for an external USB backup drive, and backups are automatic. WHY THE APOLLO? My home network includes NAS and USB drives and I'm regularly frustrated by multiple issues common to both: 1) The ugly, non-intuitive, laggy, and buggy web interfaces; 2) The lack of available, timely updates and support, and 3) Their unpredictability (as if beta versions haven't been released for months in advance). With every major OS X update I hold my breathe wondering "Will it mount?!." When I saw the Apollo Cloud, new in the Apple Store, I was intrigued. I've always dreamed of a reliable storage device with an Apple-like interface that "just works" for my primarily Apple products. I read what I could find about it and its manufacturer, Promise Technology and decided to give it a try. Though it works on other platforms, it's designed for Apple users first and is truly Apple-compatible. Further, Promise Technology has a lengthy history and strong commercial track record that I hope will translate well to this, its first consumer product. So far I'm quite happy with the Promise Apollo's performance and encourage others to consider the device. It just sits on my desk, looking pretty next to my Time Capsule, and quietly syncs stuff. It had no problem with the initial upload of over 8,000 photos and videos from my (optimized) iPhone cameral roll, either. I left the Apollo app open on my nightstand when I went to sleep and woke up to perfection. Now, everything syncs without me having to do a thing.

The app works great on my macbooks. However I purchased it to be a shareable hard drive to work from so it did not matter where in the office I was. If I want to do something with a video file I put on the hard drive I then have to download that file to the macbook I want to do the work with. Not the right product for me, but It's not a bad unit either.

Failed out of the box with Server Outage!

Took forever for it to find it on my network but did. Then when I tried to set it up and get a validation code to setup my account, could never get one and the website/server was unresponsive. Contacted the chat service and he was obviously scripted. In the end, told me what I already knew which was there was an outage. If I cannot use the dam thing without confidence that there server is not reliable, then I assume the hardware is junk also and based on reviews, that's what it indicates. Rather than be a fool trying to make something bad, good, I'm sending it back before regretting and losing all my data. Ill stick with iCloud and get a larger hardrive.
