After much research I decided on the Orbi RBK23 (this product). I bought the system from another online store as Apple wasn’t selling it at the time. Now that they are I’m even more confident that I decided on the correct system. The router and satellites look very good. Wherever they’re positioned they don’t look out of place and they’re a good shape and size to basically go almost anywhere. Setup can be a little tricky, but all networking can be. Using the Orbi app is the easiest solution but more advanced features can only be accessed from the web browser interface. This may be difficult for novice users but shouldn’t be too much hassle for intermediate or advanced users. The satellites can connect directly to the router, or they can “daisy chain” through each other, with one satellite connecting to the router and another satellite connecting to the aforementioned satellite. This allows greater coverage over long distances. The system also connects to itself using a dedicated and separate WiFi band, meaning coverage and performance are both improved simultaneously without risk of interference. Devices automatically connect to the closest router or satellite, but occasionally a device will connect to the router first and eventually connect to a satellite if it gives better signal. There’s no manual override, so leaving the system to decide what’s best is your only option, but it seems to work. One killer feature is Orbi Armor (spelled with US English). This system provided by Bitdefender protects your network and connected devices by scanning for malicious URLs as well as network and device vulnerabilities. It also provides notifications regarding new connections to your network in real time, so you can tell when someone connects to your network. As a bonus it also includes Bitdefender software for your compatible devices, such as Windows, macOS and Android (there is an iOS version but it’s irrelevant). Given that so many devices (especially IoT devices) connect directly to the internet without much (if any) security features, this is a very welcome feature. It costs £60 a year, but that covers everything, so if you have many Windows, macOS and/or Android devices this is actually very reasonable. Besides, you can’t really put a price on security and privacy these days! I’ve been very happy with this system for the best part of a year. Regular updates and smooth running make this system one of the best out there. Coupled with a built in security system it should definitely be a consideration for others looking to upgrade or change their WiFi system. Highly recommended.
