You would need a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor (or dongle) to enable you to connect this cable from your new Mac to your older Mac. This will work fine from what I've seen and used myself.

So basically, connect this thunderbolt 3 cable to an adaptor (Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor) and then connect the other end of the adaptor to your older Mac.

    Hope this helps you.

  • I connected an mid-2011 iMac to a 2017 iMac by connecting a newly-obtained Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter's plug end to the Thunderbolt 3 port socket in the new Mac, then running an old-style Thunderbolt cable (not this one!) between the adapter's socket and the Thunderbolt port socket in the old Mac.
