I have a late 2009 iMac want to convert to addtl monitor for my 2019 iMac, I tried to use the Thunderbolt 3 to Thun2, what connection do I need?

2009 iMac doesn't have Thunderbolt. If you have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) then you need a USB-C to mini DisplayPort cable or a USB-C to mini DisplayPort adapter and a mini DisplayPort cable. If you have a different 2009 iMac, then it cannot be used as a display using Target Display Mode. Read the support document "Use your iMac as a display" for more information.
