Thinking of getting a Swann Security camera system but it connects to a VGA port for monitoring , I've got a mac will this cable do the job?

No. This is a VGA *output* cable. You need a monitor, or something that can capture VGA signals, which is rare. You could, in theory, use a VGA-to-HDMI converter plus an HDMI capture device.
