You could do that, but using the migration assistant would be much quicker, easier, and maybe safer.

Mine is a disc drive. Been using it as a time machine backup drive for a while and most of it is still available. It is USB powered by the way which is nice because it turns off with the computer.

I use it for Time Machine backups only. There is an option for encryption but I have not used it yet.
