If you quoted the name correctly "AirPods 2 with charging case" then you can only plug it in with the lightning connector, only the "AirPods 2 with wireless charging case" charges by both wireless and wired.

You can only connect the airpods to one device at a time. They act as one unit even though they are separate, so while you can have one in the charging case while using the other, it is still connected to that device until you disconnect and pair it with another one.
