Not as rugged as I expected

So far it has worked fine backing up my laptop... I still haven't traveled with it. But to call it 'rugged' I am not so sure... the case material is actually thinner and weaker than an old LaCie back up I have and still use after many years (it just has less space). My old case is really thick plastic that would support weight put on it and can withstand being in a stuffed backpack... this new 'rugged' version seems like I have to be really careful to not put pressure on the 'silver/metal' area - feels like it will dent very easily- I am surprised by this. I feel like I need a protective case for it to travel with it in my backpack to protect it from other items.

Not Suitable for Use in Warm Climate

I purchased a LaCie 1TB Rugged Firewire 800 USB3 HDD in December 2011 to use as a secure backup for photographs and videos when we travel overseas. We have used this LaCie Rugged HDD on a handful of occasions as we tend to travel overseas every 3 to 4 years. Recently I attempted to use this LaCie Rugged HDD to perform an independent backup of some photographs and personal files from my iMac. I was unable to copy these files to this 1TB HDD as the Lacie Rugged HDD became very hot after saving between 83GB and 84GB of files and then misbehaved, hanging Finder in OSX El Capitan and also corrupting any other external HDDs that I had plugged into my iMac at the time. I spent several days on the phone to Apple Support and finally traced this problem with Finder hanging to the overheating of the Lacie Rugged 1TB HDD. The case design of the Lacie Rugged HDD and in particular the rubber edge bump strip clearly does not allow sufficient cooling of the HDD inside. The LaCie Rugged HDD may be suitable for use in Antarctica, Siberia or Alaska but is not suitable for use in a warm climate. I am very disappointed with this product as I expected a long life from a premium device for which I paid a premium price and all I have now is an expensive rubber edged paperweight which has only been used a handful of times over 5 years.

    Cable keeps falling out!

The insertion depth of the cable to the drive must be less than 1mm. So rugged, yet a gentle breeze will drop the cable, disconnecting the drive. It may be a good drive if you can keep it connected, but infuriorating otherwise. Test your aggression levels with this mood destroyer. I wanted it for my photography when out on a trip, definitely rather get anything else.

Died and lost all of my data.

I bought this specific hard drive in August 2013 because of all the great reviews and the shock proof case due to the amount that I travel. It is now January 2015.
I had stored all of my pictures, movies, computer backups and university assignments on it.
Until about a week ago everything worked flawlessly.
However I travel a lot like i mentioned and although all the airports and countries I was going to I always took the hard drive as a carry on and took extra care.
Yet once arriving in New Zealand I plugged the hard drive into my mac to upload some more pictures, and there was nothing.
My mac did not recognize the device at all.
Nothing had happened, the cord was in great condition so I was totally confused as to why it wasn't syncing
Long story short, I took the device to a local computer store the next morning and they informed me that the device died and that I lost all of my data.

Currently still trying to contact LaCie to try and retain my data, but so far no luck.
So, if purchasing this hard drive, have another backup as I just lost all my pictures from the past 6 years and no amount of money will ever be able to change that.

Not good apple support at all by Apple

Can't believe that Apple won't stand by the two year warranty and are saying I have to deal with it myself. Very disappointed that I have been an Apple use from the eighties and this is the help you get. Don't buy anything non Apple through Apple. They then had the nerve to 'google' the contact details for LaCie! Thanks Mitch (not) - Apple Australia. Apalling!

    Nice design. Great functionality.

Excellent drive. Looks great and works quietly. I like the USB 3.0 speed - it's just perfect for my needs. Rubber sleeve is good, stops the drive from getting scratched. Makes it easier to locate the drive, too - bright orange stands out.

    excellent portable drive

Bought this drive a couple of months ago, and I am very happy with it. It's all I expected. I really like the design and the speed of the device. 1TB is good, though I would have preferred a bit more storage capacity. I am now considering buying another Rugged drive.

    So far great!

I really like this drive. It saved my bacon a few times already thanks to its rugged design. It works like magic, it's fast and stylish. I'm currently using it mainly as a backup drive for my MacBook Pro. No complaints here.

    Bad karma from this baby

This was a dud from the beginning - it worked most of the time which is worse than all or nothing. It would not mount correctly and unmount of its own accord. Finally after one year it corrupted with no tools able to recover. I am now hunting for anything but this style of drive. I think I will even suffer external power just to be sure the thing doesn't unmount.

    Great Product With One Issue

Recently purchased this hard drive and was great for about first month of use, about a week ago the cable started becoming really loose and would constantly fall out during file transfers. I am now trying to establish wether it is my cable or the actual drive that is the problem and how I can rectify it. The overall product is outstanding though and transfers data at lightning speeds.

    Fast and very sturdy

This drive travels with me everywhere, and I'm a frequent flyer to say the least. I pull it out wherever I am and it has never wavered in its performance. This is a very solid hard drive, perfect for the not so delicate amongst us. Sometimes it makes it into my checked luggage, and I never doubt it's going to be ok.

    Reliable, fast, hardy

I have three of these and am buying another for a friend. I've used a 500GB drive for my daily backup for a couple of years, carried it in my bag (which doesn't get thrown around too hard but is handled casually), and synchronized files a couple of times a week to a second computer. File transfers are fast and error-free. Finally after a couple of years the Firewire 800 plug is balky, but the Firewire 400 still works fine. The disk hasn't failed. I use one for Time Machine and one as video storage. Now my friend will have one too.

    Works Great

This is my second Rugged drive. It's very light and has good speeds. I've set up the password protection and it works just fine. I especially appreciate the multiple interfaces, and the rugged design. The drive is also quiet. I mainly use it for storing files from photo and video shoots.
