One of the best on the market

Having felt pretty disappointed with most of the so called 'high-end' wireless speaker systems, I decided to try the latest version of the Play 5, now in its second iteration. Opening the box, it's clear you're getting a quality product. The speaker is beautifully put together and feels very substantial.

Unlike many competitors, this speaker isn't fussy about room placement... more on that later. The set up process is dead simple, and can be done from most devices. The applications walk you through the process, although it's best to use a phone or tablet as they have a microphone for Trueplay. During this set up, the speaker will make a series frequency sweeps to help tune in the sound signature for the room. The result, this is by far the best wireless speaker I've ever heard

Where is speaker fails, like no high-res playback, it excels in great sound quality, especially when using CD quality streams (Tidal or Qobuz), or music shared on a NAS device.

When compared to some higher priced competitors, such as Bowers and Wilkins or Naim Audio, the Sonos clearly has the edge. And that's saying something, bearing in mind these others have far more experience.

My search is over. I've found the ultimate discrete hifi system.

Wonderful Speaker, Apple Music Fans Beware

Ended up with two Play 5's and one Play 3. Decided to get them after reading Sonos supported Apple Music (AM), which I subscribed to. First the good news: The speakers sound great, are easy to set up and manage, and can replace cumbersome wired systems. I have the two Play 5's paired in my living room, and the sound is phenomenal. No subwoofer needed. I just marvel at the "wall of sound" which envelopes you while listening. My Play 3 is in the kitchen and also sounds great in the smaller room. Now for the bad news: although technically Sonos supports Apple Music, you have to use the Sonos app (not the Apple Music App). The dumbed down features of accessing AM this way is a disappointment. So much so, that I switched from Apple Music (which I preferred) to Spotify. Spotify and Sonos worked together so that you can use the Spotify app on Sonos. Apple should get over itself, and do this also. I would come running back to AM. Barring that, I find Spotify more than acceptable.

    Outstanding piece of equipment.

You know you've just purchased an awesome speaker when it even makes low bitrate Pandora sound excellent!
Setup was a bit cumbersome due to me needing to change some network settings, but it's of course a one time thing. Also a bit disappointing that the system does not use Airplay, but the Sonos native app actually works pretty well.
Sound wise, this thing is worth every penny. That is all. Now, go buy one!

    Multi room use speakers!

Sonos is great for home speakers designed to work on a wi if network. These are not blue tooth! They are a dream speaker for someone who wants to have a multi room setup. They sound excellent and true play is in the sonos app that allows one to tune these speakers to match the room they are placed in. They work well in a home wi if system with a boost device. The play ones play alone well but 2 can be paired together in one room for stereo or they can be unpaired to play in separate rooms. This is true of the play 3 and the play 5 as well. On their sides the play 3 and 5 are stereo vertically they are mono, the play one are mono speakers when played separately alone. Anyone with an apple computer should have these in their home set up. I use apple radio, pandora, accu radio, tune in radio,Sirius radio,MLB to name just a few of the many applications with my set up. If you have an older hi fi you can use a sonos connect as a tuner. You like a set of speakers? Use the sonos connect amp through a headphone jack on the apple computer and you have your favorite older speakers as powered speakers for your computer. Nice purchase!

BE CAREFUL - NO AIRPLAY OPTION !

The speaker cannot be operated via apple airplay.
Music can only be played using sonos app so forget about using Apple Music app you've all gotten used to.
Instead you'll have to source your Apple Music through the sonos app which is limited in options and is not responsive.
Arbitrary apps other than the few sourced by sonos cannot be used at all.
If you want to use the natural iPhone interface you'll have to connect the line-in cable like in middle ages.
The advertisements online including on apple's website are misleading in that sense.
The basses are pretty good. Mid tones are empty.
    Don't say I didn't warn you.
Most importantly keep the cool if you're surprised.

    Sonos system

I have been a music lover all my life when as a teenager my friends were buying their first cars I was buying stereo equipment instead. I recently purchased a play bar and a sonos sub along with two play ones. I was so impressed with the sound quality that I had to add two play 5s.... The quality and sound is incredible...... peel me a grape by artist Diane Krall her vocals were so clear closing my eyes you would think she was right in my living room...... for those that love music I highly recommend the play 5s........ I have spent thousands of dollars on high end speakers and these play 5s are a real bargain.

    What I expected!

I've long had my eye on Sonos, and this speaker didn't disappoint. Finally pulled the trigger on this expensive system, and I say system, because I bought four. Two 5's, an two 1's. I hear individuals say they're overrated, but I'm truly impressed with the separation in the music I'm playing through it. I like that it's WiFi, and can live without it being Bluetooth enabled as well, due to the sound downgrade. I do feel Sonos should loosen the reins a little, and allow more control to the user, rather than everything going through their proprietary software, which is a bit clunky. But I understand this is what most companies want these days, closed gardens. Because I'm sure they're looking for ways to somehow monetize their software.

    Music Lover

I absolutely listen to music way to much. This sound system is amazing, and is going to be replacing my old(ish) Sony 500 watt sound system. It sounds so good! Totally worth the price tag!
