Questionable Design, Constantly crashes when plugging in

Without fail every time I plug in this monitor the entire system freezes requiring a restart. While this has been buggy before 10.13, 10.13 has taken this to a whole new level of buggyness.

This is on a 15" 2017-maxed-out-macbook-pro and using LG's provided screen manager utility so it's quite clear problems still exist with this product even after routergate.

Otherwise I'd love to say the monitor is great for the price - with decent colour and resolution for a 21" screen.

But it's questionable design makes it's a shame it doesn't work with more devices, and some standard usb ports and/or ethernet on the back would be much more useful than usb 2.0-speed usb c ports. What are you actually imagining we plug into these?

All in all after owning this for 3 months or so I can say this would be a much better screen all round if they had just put some decent standard connectivity onto it.

    loose cable

I bought the new 13" MBP and LG 22MD4KA-B from Apple in late 2016.

The USB-C to USB-C cable supplied by LG has loose-fitting ends. For example, if you simply bump the cable, the LG goes black. Both ends are loose. It doesn't snap firmly in to my MBP nor into the monitor.

Twice I have contacted LG and each time they sent me an identical new cable.

Apple support seemed unaware of the issue and it isn't their product but they said to bring it to the Apple store which I will when I can get there.

After Firmware-Update of the LG - all is working as expected

    Hi folks,

I love the LG UltraFine. But you have to know a few things before using it without pain:
    - Controlling the ambient light you have to press the CONTROL-key and change the light by the two control buttons (brighter/darker). Slider won't work.
    - Installing the LG Screen Manager app will update the firmware of the LG. After the update all problems related to sleep mode are gone.
    - Ambient light sensor isn't supported by macos at the moment. Perhaps with macos 10.13. (crossing fingers).

I have mine LG connected to the OWC TB 3 dock. Replaced the short TB3 cable from OWC with a 1 meter Belking TB3, which improved performance, I think so. The original 0.5 meter long cable wasn't useful for me, to short. Despite the specs of the Belkin cable (20 Gb/s instead of 40) the cable is working without a hassle. :-)

5 stars if apple will support the Ambient Light Sensor.

    Drop-Dead Gorgeous

I would not have believed how beautiful this monitor's screen is. Brilliant and no setup other than downloading software and firmware updates. Matched with Magic Keyboard and Trackpad, it makes for a very nice dock setup for my MacBook Pro. The only thing it's missing is the camera, but that's not a deal-breaker for me. Speakers are just as good as MacBook's as well.

    Very, very good, but...

Purchased in August 2017 direct from the Mac Store. I am using with MacBook Pro (Touch Bar) 15".

Great monitor that is more than big enough due to the real estate of the 4k display.

    Positives
    Great design
Amazing screen and resolution. 21.5' is plenty big at 4k
Easy movement of the screen up, down and tilt
Super simple to use. No buttons! Plug in the USB-C at the back and it auto finds and connects
The 3 other ports at the back have helped unclutter my desk

    Negatives
No Camera and Microphone. Very dis-appointing at this price point.
USB C ports at the back are only USB 2, which is a very silly limitation. And does strike one as nickel and diming the customer.

Other than those 2 niggles, I am loving using it and it is a seamless integration with the Mac. I would recommend.

Display great, badly let down when sound plays as white noise after sleep

While the quality of the display itself is really good, I've been very disappointed to find that if my MacBook has been asleep for a length of time, on wake the the LG display plays any sound as white noise or distorted sound with white noise mixed in. As a result I could not recommend this monitor to anyone, which is a shame. Also only supporting USB2 on the monitor hub is equally disappointing but I was aware on this on purchase.

    Excellent Display!

I love the minimalism of it... two cords thats it. One bringing power to the monitor the other for display/power to the laptop. The stereo on this thing is so impressive!!!

    Works very well with MacBook

I wanted a external monitor with a larger screen for my MacBook (early 2015, 12" retina). I tried various adapters to get it to work with different external monitors. I tried to use a LED cinema display with a number of DisplayPort adapters and none worked reliably. I tried a number of displays via the HDMI adapter and was disappointed with the quality of font rendering. I tried the ACER KMIPUZ USB-C 2560x1440 display and was disappointed with font rendering and how it behaved when waking from sleep.

If you are used to external monitors on PCs, note that Macs need a lot more pixels to get the same visual quality because windows renders fonts differently (much more crisp) than Macs do. It took me a lot of research to figure this out.

I was worried about the LG UltraFine 4K because I thought it might not be big enough (the 5K is not supported on the MacBook). However, I am VERY pleased with the LG 4K. The font rendering is perfect. It does everything you would want it to do regarding sleep. It even wakes up when I hit my Logitech keyboard! You can take a sleeping closed MacBook and plug it in to the USB-C and then hit an external keyboard to wake the system without opening the MacBook. The display is so crisp that you can get by with a smaller screen than you might expect. A+

Could be cheaper, but a MacBook Pro must-have.

The display is nearly identical to the 4K iMac. It is absolutely beautiful and very bright. You can attach accessories to the back of it to make a docking station setup for anything you would connect to it when in a desktop mode. Unfortunately it utilizes USB C instead of Thunderbolt 3 so the back ports only support USB 2.0 speeds, but it being USB C instead of Thunderbolt 3 adds compatibility with the 12 inch MacBook. The speakers are better than the ones built into the notebooks but they are not as good as dedicated speakers and this monitor does not come with the webcam. All things considered, this is a fantastic product and if you don't have a desktop but have a MacBook, this is the way to go.

Finicky out of the gate, but gorgeous.

I had trouble early on with it waking without unplugging/replugging it after seemingly every sleep cycle, but a couple things have made me a happy customer:

    1. I bought a *full-fledged* USB-C cable from Belkin, which is not cheap, but seemed to greatly improve the sleep/wake issues over the included USB-C cable.

    2. A software update from LG (via their LG Screen Manager software available from their website) that seemed to coincide with the 10.12.6 MacOS Sierra update on June 19, 2017 has also seemed to make it run smoother.

Setup notes: I also bought an HDMIUSB-C adapter for a second, non-retina external monitor and just plug the power cable into the back of that. Both monitors work well concurrently in concert with my late 2016 MBP w/ Radeon Pro 460.

Hope this helps someone else out there.

    Sleep/Wake Fail!

Same issues as everyone else. Monitors won't wake up and you need to unplug / replug them in which is particularly painful if you have a hard drive plugged in since you can't eject it properly since all the screens are off. Major fail for Apple. Surprised after 7+ months there isn't a firmware or software update to solve this issues. Missing my Thunderbolt displays. Never had any issue with them.

No problems with a MBP 13" 2017...works great!

Connected to the 13" 2017 MacBook Pro, this monitor works marvelously. Mirroring the MBP, with the MBP connected and cover closed, the LG Ultrafine 4K performs superbly. The speakers, the volume controls, the sharpness of the picture are very good and impress without complaint. Plug and play. The LG Mac downloads from the LG site are unnecessary and confusing...I don't need them. This was a great way to create a desktop machine using a laptop bridge...the best of all worlds for me; I can read two pages at once and see pdfs very well without strain. I tested iTunes, Endnote, Excel, Word, Omnifoucus, Nefliix; all work without problem for me.

    Perfect for MacBook

Everything worked better than expected. The USB C feature takes the place of a docking station in my application. I hook up the cable, and I'm ready to go while my MacBook charges. Sure the monitor is pricey in itself, but the USB C connectivity, in built in speakers and picture quality make for a nice desktop free of excessive clutter. The display is stunning as to be expected with the specs and LG quality. LG has some downloadable software that allow you to make use of split screen and other features. It's a bit clunky but I have used it in a couple of applications. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase and it suits my application better that I had expected.

Problem using with new (2017) iMac

    Two complaints:

    1) When I wake my iMac (21.5" Retina) the LG monitor just sits there with a black screen even though the display settings show that it is connected. If I pull the USB-C plug from the back of the LG and plug it back in the monitor comes to life. -1

    2) The color is just a little bit blue compared to the iMac Retina screen. -1

The good thing is that the definition is really good but that is why I bought it, it is expected and so no + star.

    Doesn't work with iMac 2017

When the computer wakes up from sleep, the LG monitor doesn't wake up. I have installed the LG software (monitor firmware up to date) and disconnected everything from the USB ports except the monitor. It won't wake up when the computer reboots either. I have to unplug then replug in the monitor. Beware of this monitor with the new iMacs!

Junk - Don't buy this monitor!

When my new iMac 2017 wakes up, the monitor doesn't wake up. The only way is to wake up the monitor is to disconnect the USB-C cable. I don't know who is at fault, Apple, for pushing junk or failing to make their iMac work properly with external monitors, or LG for making a terrible monitor that doesn't work. Don't buy this monitor!

    Just works

Received my LG monitor today. Simple, clean design and well packaged. Just plug the USB C cable and everything 'just works'! Beautiful screen and a perfect complement to my new MacBook Pro 13".

One feature I found out by accident is that like Windows 10, you can 'snap' windows left and right by holding down the mouse on the 'green' button in the window you want to snap.

This is Apple at its best...everything works together without minimal technical messing about. Perfect.

PS: I have been using a Mac since 2008 and left earlier this year to a Surface Pro 4. While the Surface Pro 4 and Windows has matured a lot, Apple's ecosystem and quality is still the best, hence my return.

    Monitor randomly turns off

This is driving me crazy! I am running the LG 4k from my 6 month old 13" MacBook. The monitor intermittently turns itself off. To get it to turn back on, I have to unplug the power/USB cord from the Mac and plug it back in. There is no rhyme or reason as to why or when this happens.

I thought it was a problem with the monitor so I packed it up and returned it to the Apple store where it was purchased. Second monitor has the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.

The guy at the Apple store implied I was pulling too much power for my little Mac but I WAS TOLD THE LG4K WAS DESIGNED FOR THE MAC 13".

I'm using all standard Apple cables. FYI, I'm hardwired, not wireless - if that for some reason is the problem (Apple says that's not it). I'd suggest you are rolling the dice buying this monitor, regardless of how good it looks.
