    Near miss

I have not had issues with my display not waking from standby, flickering or colour temperature like some others have had. The issue I'm having like everyone else, low level sound is all or nothing. One bar of sound level via the keyboard isn't quite enough, next bar up the sound is blaring at you and you have to adjust the video or music level via the players software to get to an acceptable level. Software fix is required!

    Beat expectations.

After all the bad reviews when released I couldn't decide what was the best choice with my new 15 inch MBP. In the end I went with two 4k's and it is great! The speakers are good and two of them do charge a 15 inch MBP so less cables. If your debating what to get and think the 5k's are overpriced then this is the best option.

    Ambient Light Sensor/Volume step-changes

Ambient light sensor does not work with MacOS Sierra 10.12.3

Volume step-changes are too significant in comparison to any other form of audio output.

Worked perfectly out of the box

Apparently some have had a problem with this monitor but in my experience hooking it up to a 2016 Macbook Pro 13" (no strip) it worked immediately upon hook up, looks fantastic and works perfectly with the Macbook Pro open or closed. Maybe some earlier editions of this monitor had problems ... My unit was purchased from a local Apple store.

I think the price is excellent for the product. It's true, the monitor design could be a little more stylish but if it were perhaps there would be less need for a company like Apple.

    Very Good Monitor

    Excellent picture quality
    Easy one cable connection
    Clean looking hardware

    Lack of USB 3 throughput
    No FaceTime camera
Speaker volume hard to control at low settings

Note: Originally I was having issues with the monitor sometimes not waking from sleep. Over the last several days the issue has disappeared. I installed the LG Screen Manager software a few weeks ago and I am guessing they must have pushed through an update. No way for me to verify this but not having any wake from sleep issues anymore.

You get what you pay for ...

This display is excellent. Full stop. The monitor oozes quality in build and display. Lots of metal make it really sturdy and the height & tilt adjustment is very smooth. Now, the main part is of course the display quality and I have to say it cannot be faulted. I find once you have used a retina display you cannot go back. Crisp and gorgeous colour reproduction.

    stunning display quality, solidly built

I'm not sure what all the criticism regarding this display is about, I haven't experienced any of the problems mentioned here. It works like a Swiss watch with my new MacBook Pro with Touchbar, it even seems sharper than the Mac display. That one can do everything with a single cable is a huge convenience, and this has worked reliably for me thus far. The display is highly recommended, it's a solid addition for a pro level set up with a MacBook Pro.

Paired with MacBook 12" 2016 m5. First unit had faulty usb-c cable (not a standard cable, took ages to get replacement, finally swapped out unit). Both first and second unit have flickering issue (intermittent flash to black) -- wifi interference does seem the likely culprit as it improves when moved further away (NOT JUST AN ISSUE WITH 5k Display). Repositioned the unit but it's not where I want it...Will likely return. Too bad because it's a nice looking screen and when used as second display gives me enough room (thought I'd be disappointed with the size). The mid-level 2016 MacBook can just about keep up with the display in terms of lag.

    Intermittent Blank Screen

This Monitor + New Macook over USB-C, Intermittent Blank Screen throughout the working day. Would not recommend, Apple in denial about the problem. Only settles down on the rate of interference from a few times an hour to once/twice an hour after a reboot.

Tried both 5k and 4k. Kept the 4k

I actually purchased both to try them out side-by-side in my home office. The 5k had issues. Flickering, on off at will..on and on. The 4k just worked as advertised...smaller footprint, lighter and "cooler" as well. NOTE: (I will add this important fact) Frustrated, I went to Apple and purchased a Belkin cable (green and white box) and re-installed the 5k monitor with the Belkin branded cable. The replacement cable fixed all the issues I was having with my 5k monitor! Go figure.

In the end with the new cable, the 5k functioned as great as the 4k. It was the weight and footprint (and money) that caused me to keep the 4k.

Very pleased based on first three days in service

Paired one LG 4K UltraFine with a 15" late 2016 MacBook Pro 2.7GHz i7 Radeon Pro 455 with Touch Bar (standard configuration machine) running Sierra 10.12.3. Except for when booting the Mac, I always keep the lid closed during use. Haven't connected any peripherals to this monitor's USB ports as yet.

For my purposes, this monitor is great. Beautiful "retina" image quality. Attractive flat black finish on the minimalist bezel and stand. Stand is rock solid, absolutely no monitor wobble sitting on my stable desk top, and allows easy height and tilt adjustments.

Have not experienced any wake from sleep issues, nor screen brightness adjustment issues. Brightness adjustment buttons on my previous generation Apple bluetooth keyboard work fine with this monitor. My 15" MBP has maintained a constant 100% battery charge during use through the single USB-C cable connected to this monitor. As other reviews have noted, volume of the built-in speakers does go abruptly from low to high at the low end of the volume adjustment range unless option-shift is used to make fine adjustments.

The LG Screen Manager app, downloaded from the LG web site, is useful for quickly tiling up to 4 open windows in a variety of layouts, and also allows the monitor to receive automatic updates from LG.

    Bad shielding

While the 4K has not been in the news much, like its bigger 5K sibling, it has bad shielding. I use a standup treadmill desk. While I am on the treadmill, I can build up static electricity. This causes the the display to randomly blackout for a fraction of a second. When I step off the treadmill it has no issues. If I ground myself while on the treadmill, the display works as expected. This was not a problem with my old trusty 30" Cinema display.

    The biggest disappointment ever!

I bought a couple of LG UltraFine 4K Displays.
One of them was broken. Very frustrated because of zero quality control.
Today I had got replacement. And do you know what? The new monitor has totally different color temperature! Color profile exactly the same, but one monitor has "white" shade of white color and another one has "yellow" shade of white color.
Have you promised P3 99%? You even can't provide the same color temperature.
    Totally disappointed, have to return.

    Great Display But Faulty

Visually, the display is excellent and a one-cable-does-it-all (USB-C) makes for limited clutter and a nice minimalistic work space, however I experienced several other issues which resulted in me exchanging and then ultimately returning the monitor all together.

The first issue I had was intermittent connectivity with the built in speakers. Sometimes they would work fine, other times the speakers could not be recognized by my MBP. After hours with customer service (both LG and Apple), no resolution was reached. I exchanged the monitor for another and with the second monitor the speaker issue was fixed. Unfortunately, with the second monitor I experienced issues with a non-responsive computer after waking it from sleep mode that required unplugging then reconnection of the USB-C cable from the monitor to the computer.

Overall, I was dissatisfied with this monitor and would not recommend it. Save yourself the time and frustration and look for another 4K display.

Almost a perfect match for MacBook 12" 2015

I purchased the LG UltrFine as soon as it was announced based on Apple working with LG to produce a display matched to the performance of the MacBook 12". I boot my MacBook, wait for it to complete, enter my password, close the lid and go to work. I use the Magic Keyboard and Mouse working mostly in Adobe Illustrator in conjunction with the LG Ultrafine 4k display set at about 75% screen brightness setting. I have experienced all the positives listed in this forum.

Everything functions fine. Most times I Shut Down the MacBook completely. Always restarts fine after a complete shutdown.

However, when I put the MacBook to sleep and awaken it some time later, the LG display brightness is almost black intermittently. The display brightness slider is almost at the minimum setting. I have to do in to the Preferences and manually move the brightness slider back to the 75% position.

I have referred this issue to an Apple advanced support person. I received an Image Capture app to capture files and forwarded them to Apple for evaluation when the display was in this dar mode. So far, there has been so solution.

I just update macOS from 10.12.2 to 10.12.3. Problem still exists. I also reported this issue to LG. They were no help.

With others experiencing similar issues, I think it is about time that Apple finds a fix.

Display quality is great, software running it needs major work

The display quality is wonderful, but the software running it has two major bugs that need sorting out. The first bug is unexpected shutoffs. While exiting full-screened apps or videos, sometimes the display goes black and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to turn back on. The second bug is the volume control. The display's speakers jump up to about 40% total volume within the first two volume increments of the Mac's total volume capacity (16 increments). This makes fine-tuning the volume extremely frustrating as it jumps between "Barely Audible," and, "Everyone Within 50 Feet Can Hear," between the first and second volume increments. Turning it up past the 4th increment blows the audio out. As a temporary solution, I've resorted to holding Option and Shift while adjusting the volume to reach increments in-between steps. I hope a software update is pushed to either the display or Mac OS to fix this issue; it's very annoying.

    Stunning Display

I spent ages trying to decide in advance if this monitor would be too small. I took the plunge and I am glad i did. The image and text clarity is as good as on the 13 inch MacBook Pro it is attached to. Being older I had worried that the default scaled resolution might make text appear too small but it did not at all. The text is so pin sharp I can work comfortably for extended periods.

Brightness is just right and colours are rich and sumptuous. YouTube 4K content looks amazing as does HD. For the first time I have been able to edit 4K images shot on the phone.

Physically the monitor is sturdy with good adjustment. The USBC connectors could fit better perhaps and the limitations of usb2 speeds is well documented. I have limited peripherals to a lightning to usbc cable.

I have experienced a wake from sleep issue on occasion though. I have not found a pattern to it. For me it's not a deal breaker but a fix would be nice.

Useless with a Macbook Pro with touchbar

The failing to wake from sleep issue has made this useless. The entire reasons i bought it was for the convenience of being able to leave my MacBook plugged in and charging via the single cable but every time i open the MacBook I have to unplug and plug the monitor back in, sometimes 5-6 times before it wakes up.

Lately its also been making my macbook crash and re-start if I leave my computer open instead of closing it and putting it in clamshell mode. When i come back to wake it back it up, itll crash. Does not happen when not plugged into the monitor.

    Is Working Fine

I bought the LG UltraFine 4K Display over a month ago. It has been working great and the sound quality is very good. I use it with a 2015 MacBook and have not had any problems.
