    Beautiful - but frustrating

Half the time this screen won't wake up from sleep when connected to my 2016 MBP with TouchBar. I have unplug and replug and let it restart itself every. single. time. It is beyond frustrating and time-wasting.

The Best Monitor I have owned

This is a great piece of Kit, sharp text, vibrant colours - so easy to set up. Works perfectly with my 12in MacBook. The ambient light sensor is a bonus. Well worth its premium price tag, no regrets in buying. Highly recommended.

    Improved My Camera No End

About 18 months ago, I upgraded my DSLR. I was always a little disappointed with the picture quality except, curiously, when I exported to my HD TV. I received this monitor in December '16 as a Christmas present to complement my new MBP. My first reaction to its picture quality was 'wow' and it has improved my camera's photos from average to great (my old external monitor clearly wasn't up to the job).

The monitor's display quality is really good, a little better than the late-2016 (USB-C) MBP's inbuilt display in my opinion. It's a compact monitor but has 'deceptively spacious' working space - when it came out of the box I was worried that it was too small but, for me, it's perfect. This is a monitor to work with, not to show images to a crowd of people.

Physically, it is minimalist but well built; the stand is particularly good with a heavy baseplate and a simple lift from low to high enough to stand behind an open 15" MBP. There are no controls, when the attached Mac boots, the monitor lights up, when the Mac shuts down, so does the monitor. The monitor charges the Mac over the same cable as the Mac sends the video so it's true one-wire USB-C operation.

The rest is just OK: the monitor has speakers and they're fine for casual use. It has 3 uncommitted USB-C ports but they are only USB2 with USB-C sockets so they will slow down modern devices - but they're fine, my USB3 Time Machine drive is usually plugged into one and it just takes a little longer to do its job. The reason is that the monitor isn't a Thunderbolt device like its big brother, it's a USB device.

    For me, it's excellent.

The Best 4K for MacBook Pro

I've used a number of 4K/UHD displays on MacBook Pro's, and this is by far the best experience. It connects with minimal cabling, the screen is perfect; not glossy and not matte, it fires up instantly when connected, and the colors are brilliant and bright. The extras are the built-in speakers, the USB hub, and the clean physical design. If you want something beyond the junk on Amazon, this is it.

More Impressive than the bigger sibling (5k).

I returned the 5k because it's has patchy backlighting and varying hues of green and pink, much like the issues the late 2016 macbook pros are exhibiting. The 4k has a similar issue, but way less obvious.

The 4star rating is because overall it's a solid monitor. However, there is a big audio jump between one and two bars when adjusting sound from the keyboard; it's worst on the 5k. I hope LG comes out with a fix for this. I opted for the 4k not just because of the pink/green hue issues, but also because it has a nicer boarder (5k has a large forehead to accommodate a camera and microphone), no fan (the 5k has a fan behind the mounting plate; I noticed a humming sound from the monitor and found it had the fan; it's a subtle sound), and wobbles less on the desk.

    An absolute disaster for Apple

It's a gorgeous display, but like almost everyone else here, it refused to wake up from sleep with a 2016 MBP with Touchbar. So it was useless and I returned it.

Connects using USB C but only provides USB 2.0 ports... WTF?

I can't believe for a second that Apple did any serious testing of their own on this monitor. The problems are so glaring and widespread they would have found them. Some people at Apple are really asleep at the switch.

**PRECURSOR** - Using brand new 15" MacBook Pro w/Touchbar fully loaded ($4k+ spec)
    - I am using three of them together (was told up to 4 could be used on high spec)

    1) When you wake up the computer from sleep one of three things happens:
    a) only one OR two monitors turns on, NEVER all three
    b) loses responsiveness altogether and all three need to be re-plugged in
    c) computer glitches and must be restart

    2) these displays are not very intelligently designed in terms of routing of cables, how the move about and how they sync together.

    3) getting the brightness between all three identical is nearly impossible. changing settings using system preferences is a near nightmare.

Overall I will be returning all three monitors to apple in the next 24 hours. 2 stars for crystal clear picture.

    Does not work properly

As a lifelong Apple customer and fan, I've never written a negative review of a product. Sure, there is always room for improvement, but this situation is different.

The LG display and brand new MacBook Pro continually crashes when being plugged in or unplugged..about 20-30 percent of the time you get a weird flickering and the screen won't orient properly. This setup causes about 5-10 reboots per week.

Sadly, this reminds me of Microsoft in the 90's. Clearly Apple didn't work as closely with LG as they claimed.

I don't get why apple won't make displays that just work. The PC market is shrinking, but it's not going to disappear in the next 10 years.

    Near miss

I have not had issues with my display not waking from standby, flickering or colour temperature like some others have had. The issue I'm having like everyone else, low level sound is all or nothing. One bar of sound level via the keyboard isn't quite enough, next bar up the sound is blaring at you and you have to adjust the video or music level via the players software to get to an acceptable level. Software fix is required!

    Beat expectations.

After all the bad reviews when released I couldn't decide what was the best choice with my new 15 inch MBP. In the end I went with two 4k's and it is great! The speakers are good and two of them do charge a 15 inch MBP so less cables. If your debating what to get and think the 5k's are overpriced then this is the best option.

    Ambient Light Sensor/Volume step-changes

Ambient light sensor does not work with MacOS Sierra 10.12.3

Volume step-changes are too significant in comparison to any other form of audio output.

Worked perfectly out of the box

Apparently some have had a problem with this monitor but in my experience hooking it up to a 2016 Macbook Pro 13" (no strip) it worked immediately upon hook up, looks fantastic and works perfectly with the Macbook Pro open or closed. Maybe some earlier editions of this monitor had problems ... My unit was purchased from a local Apple store.

I think the price is excellent for the product. It's true, the monitor design could be a little more stylish but if it were perhaps there would be less need for a company like Apple.

    Very Good Monitor

    Excellent picture quality
    Easy one cable connection
    Clean looking hardware

    Lack of USB 3 throughput
    No FaceTime camera
Speaker volume hard to control at low settings

Note: Originally I was having issues with the monitor sometimes not waking from sleep. Over the last several days the issue has disappeared. I installed the LG Screen Manager software a few weeks ago and I am guessing they must have pushed through an update. No way for me to verify this but not having any wake from sleep issues anymore.

You get what you pay for ...

This display is excellent. Full stop. The monitor oozes quality in build and display. Lots of metal make it really sturdy and the height & tilt adjustment is very smooth. Now, the main part is of course the display quality and I have to say it cannot be faulted. I find once you have used a retina display you cannot go back. Crisp and gorgeous colour reproduction.

    stunning display quality, solidly built

I'm not sure what all the criticism regarding this display is about, I haven't experienced any of the problems mentioned here. It works like a Swiss watch with my new MacBook Pro with Touchbar, it even seems sharper than the Mac display. That one can do everything with a single cable is a huge convenience, and this has worked reliably for me thus far. The display is highly recommended, it's a solid addition for a pro level set up with a MacBook Pro.

Paired with MacBook 12" 2016 m5. First unit had faulty usb-c cable (not a standard cable, took ages to get replacement, finally swapped out unit). Both first and second unit have flickering issue (intermittent flash to black) -- wifi interference does seem the likely culprit as it improves when moved further away (NOT JUST AN ISSUE WITH 5k Display). Repositioned the unit but it's not where I want it...Will likely return. Too bad because it's a nice looking screen and when used as second display gives me enough room (thought I'd be disappointed with the size). The mid-level 2016 MacBook can just about keep up with the display in terms of lag.

    Intermittent Blank Screen

This Monitor + New Macook over USB-C, Intermittent Blank Screen throughout the working day. Would not recommend, Apple in denial about the problem. Only settles down on the rate of interference from a few times an hour to once/twice an hour after a reboot.

Tried both 5k and 4k. Kept the 4k

I actually purchased both to try them out side-by-side in my home office. The 5k had issues. Flickering, on off at will..on and on. The 4k just worked as advertised...smaller footprint, lighter and "cooler" as well. NOTE: (I will add this important fact) Frustrated, I went to Apple and purchased a Belkin cable (green and white box) and re-installed the 5k monitor with the Belkin branded cable. The replacement cable fixed all the issues I was having with my 5k monitor! Go figure.

In the end with the new cable, the 5k functioned as great as the 4k. It was the weight and footprint (and money) that caused me to keep the 4k.

Very pleased based on first three days in service

Paired one LG 4K UltraFine with a 15" late 2016 MacBook Pro 2.7GHz i7 Radeon Pro 455 with Touch Bar (standard configuration machine) running Sierra 10.12.3. Except for when booting the Mac, I always keep the lid closed during use. Haven't connected any peripherals to this monitor's USB ports as yet.

For my purposes, this monitor is great. Beautiful "retina" image quality. Attractive flat black finish on the minimalist bezel and stand. Stand is rock solid, absolutely no monitor wobble sitting on my stable desk top, and allows easy height and tilt adjustments.

Have not experienced any wake from sleep issues, nor screen brightness adjustment issues. Brightness adjustment buttons on my previous generation Apple bluetooth keyboard work fine with this monitor. My 15" MBP has maintained a constant 100% battery charge during use through the single USB-C cable connected to this monitor. As other reviews have noted, volume of the built-in speakers does go abruptly from low to high at the low end of the volume adjustment range unless option-shift is used to make fine adjustments.

The LG Screen Manager app, downloaded from the LG web site, is useful for quickly tiling up to 4 open windows in a variety of layouts, and also allows the monitor to receive automatic updates from LG.

    Bad shielding

While the 4K has not been in the news much, like its bigger 5K sibling, it has bad shielding. I use a standup treadmill desk. While I am on the treadmill, I can build up static electricity. This causes the the display to randomly blackout for a fraction of a second. When I step off the treadmill it has no issues. If I ground myself while on the treadmill, the display works as expected. This was not a problem with my old trusty 30" Cinema display.
