    Very, very disappointing

    • Written by Mark W from Middlesex

I have this attached to a new MBP 15" and over the first couple of weeks of use it has been a very poor experience. The display panel itself is excellent - fabulous image quality. But that's it. Connecting the MBP to the display causes the MBP to freeze frequently, or not respond at all. Connected keyboards (with required USB adaptors, naturally) constantly need to be unplugged and plugged in again to work, and connecting the MBP with the lid closed while trying to wake it with an attached keyboard works maybe 1 time in 10. All in all, this is far from great and another example of Apple not giving the Mac enough time or talent.

£900 for a monitor that can't be used if you have wifi?

    • Written by Naveed I from London

It's being reported that if your fairly close to your router you get strong screen flickering and if you're too close and have your router on your desk like me it douesn't work at all. As apple/lg cheaped out on any kind of em shielding.

Steve Jobs would not have allowed this to be associated with Apple. :(

    • Written by Carlos D from Chula Vista

Super buggy! Why is this even offered on the Apple Website? If it's not ready for prime-time, fix all the bugs and then you can release it.

    Trash. Do not buy.

    • Written by Oliver J from Melbourne

These monitors are trash. I have one. Regret replacing my Thunderbolt Display with it.

Things I have experienced while using this monitor with my Late 2016 13" MBP (with Touch Bar):

    1. Kernel Panics when connecting monitor or on boot with the panel connected.
    2. The monitor cable is loose at the back of the monitor - wiggling it very gently will cause it to disconnect and occasionally cause cocos kernel panics.
    3. Waking my Mac from sleep has about a 50% chance of not turning on the external monitor.
    4. Video display corruption on the built in laptop panel when connecting the LG.
    5. Enormous mouse pointers left on external screen - I end up with two mouse pointers. One giant one and the normal one. I have to disconnect and reconnect the monitor to get rid of the giant rogue mouse pointer.
    6. Connecting the monitor causes my built in laptop LCD panel to "forget" its brightness settings (and thus I have to constantly tweak my brightness settings when connecting the monitor).
    7. If I connect the LG monitor but already have headphones plugged in to my Laptop, the LG hijacks the audio and starts playing audio out its built in speakers (often very loudly) - not good in an office setting.
    8. External USB devices connected to the monitor sometimes don't work. Eg, Apple USB 101 key keyboard doesn't respond or USB external HDD not detected or mounted.

Also, the stand is very bad and the monitor is very wobbly. There is also no cable management which is terrible when you have to have so many dongles connected and the display cable is so loose and temperamental.

Avoid this product like the plague. Apple should be very ashamed of itself for endorsing this pile of ****.

This is not what I paid for

    • Written by Kristen L from Rochester Hills

Yes, the quality of the display is excellent....when it works.

Like many others, I have numerous problems making it work with the new MacBook Pro 2016 13" with Touch Bar:

    1. Computer crashes 100% of the times I disconnect the display with the lid closed.
    2. Occasionally the image of the mouse gets stuck on the screen, it does not go away unless I reboot.
    3. Flickering and some odd lines appear in the display at random times.
    4. The display blinks (it turns black for a millisecond) every 2 to 3 minutes.

For a while I thought that my unit was defective until I read all the other reviews.

This is the first time in many years that I have had so many issues with an external display. Very disappointing.

    Do not buy!

    • Written by Marco D from München

After a few months, the displays suffers from a major image retention problem. LG support states that this is normal and refuses to do something. Therefore, I really can't recommend to buy this display.

Do your research before you buy

    • Written by Joseph D

I mistakenly didn't do my due diligence and read all the reviews for this display before I bought. This display has given me nothing but problems, I decided to go with the LG because my Thunderbolt Display was amazing and lasted me 5+ years without any issues. I bought the LG and keep getting random turn offs/on to poor color quality and just overall reliability issues. For these reasons, unfortunately, I cannot recommend this display. My old Thunderbolt Display was better quality and built to last.

This display has some serious issues

    • Written by John W

We bought a bunch of these in early 2017 and 9 out of 10 of them have some serious issues...From random rebooting, to USB-C problems, all with the latest firmware...We cannot recommend these monitors at all. Our old Thunderbolt Display's worked great, we thought we would "upgrade" to these LG's, but they were in fact a downgrade. Also the picture quality leaves a lot more to be desired...Even with the latest firmware updates and hours on the phone with LG, the issues all still persist.

Had major problems in less than one year

    • Written by Jeffrey S

This display has given me many problems, especially for the $1299.99 price tag, I certainly expected it to last longer than six months. I only bought the unit six months ago, and already the display fails to turn on...I had to send it back to LG for repair and they have had it now for a month and still haven't fixed or replaced my unit. I wish Apple would make displays again. I miss the Thunderbolt. I cannot recommend this display.

causes kernel panic with MACBOOK PRO 2016 with touchbar

    • Written by Nicholas N from Bellaire

Almost every time I disconnect the monitor from my MacBookpro it causes the computer to have a kernel panic after which I have to restart my laptop. Very sad, as this is the monitor that APPLE recommended with this laptop for 5K

    Buggy, not market ready

    • Written by Will K from Athens

This display works poorly with my late 2016 13” MBP. When I connect my laptop, the volume is either too soft at 1 bar or too loud at 2 bars. When I disconnect my laptop, it often crashes. LG’s support group is way below the Apple standard. They’ve never heard of the problem and have no further suggestions than reversing the cable and restarting the computer.

I know I'm just repeating the content of numerous other reviews, but it is frustrating that the only problem with an announced fix (router interference) is the only problem I haven't had.

I really regret Apple’s exit from the display business. I was willing to pay more for a better built, truly Apple compatible display.

    WAP Proximity Issue

    • Written by Patrick G from Bolton

Place a WiFi Access Point (or router) close to this display (i.e., less than 48 inches), and it will cause it to "flicker" (i.e., go black for a second). Move it too close, and the display goes black until the WAP is far enough from the monitor. The flicker is intermittent, but it seems to depend on how much WiFi traffic goes through the WAP. After working as an electrical engineer for 35 years, I have to say that this a fairly serious and shoddy design flaw. Until Apple and LG fix this problem, I wouldn't recommend purchasing this product.

Nice resolution, color gamma, but... unstable connection with my MBP

    • Written by Timothy D from Eeklo

When connected to my late '16 MBP 15" the connection is often unstable. Making my MBP switching from the display to my MBP display a lot. It's like a black out, en then a few seconds later it comes back. This is very frustrating when working projects where I really need the extra display. This is very frustrating on a € 5000 setup! The problem occurred after updating OS X to the latest version. And with only one year of support, witch is just passed for the MBP, I feel really abandoned by Apple!

    Pure Garbage

    • Written by Jason B from Vista

I bought one of these to replace a Thunderbolt display. I thought with Apple's endorsement it would be an excellent replacement. The display causes a new MBP 13" to crash every day. The ports disconnect constantly causing attached devices to stop working. It's hard to believe Apple even sold this junk in their stores. I now have to send the display into LG for service hoping that resolves the issue.

Tons of bugs with this monitor

    • Written by Yili H from Gilbert

Apple really needs to step up to fix the bugs.

For example, sometimes it wont wake from sleep.
Almost always a giant cursor left on the screen and you have to disconnect to get rid of it.

Crashed my MBP 2016 15" every time I plugged/unplugged it

    • Written by Daniel K from Boston

I really really wanted to like this monitor, but I had the same issues that so many other people seem to be having. When it worked the display was great. However, my 2016 MBP 15" would crash nearly every time that I plugged or unplugged it from this monitor. Occasionally it would work, but I could never figure out what conditions would lead to it working without crashing. It was completely unacceptable for a monitor and laptop of this price.

It may be that the issue is entirely with Apple and not with LG, since it is my Macbook Pro crashing, but these terrible issues should have been found during basic testing of the monitor before releasing it.

I tried resetting the SMC, NVRAM and multiple other suggestions, but none worked. Someone did suggest disabling filevault, but I didn't want to do that and it seemed like a bad solution if it really was the only way. I returned the monitor with one day remaining on my return window since I could never find a solution.

Do not buy this monitor unless you like taking risks. Perhaps it will work for you, but it is not a well-tested product.

    This monitor doesn't work

    • Written by Dan O from Lehi

I bought two of these monitors to use with my new MacBook Pro 15". The first two showed up and one would not display anything and the other would turn off and on every 2-3 minutes. Apple replaced the monitors and the two new monitors still had the same issue. Unplugging my USB wireless keyboard helped improve the situation but still have regular flashes and crashes. My computer crashes about 3 times in an 8 hour period and flashes 8-10 times during that same time period.

I hope Apple fixes this issue soon. It makes it hard to get work done under these circumstances.

    Great picture, bad everything else.

    • Written by Cody C from Mission Viejo

The colors, contrast, and clarity are phenomenal. Best I've ever experienced in a monitor. HOWEVER, the picture quality does not outweigh the glaring negatives about this product. To start with a big one, when waking my mbp from sleep w/ the monitor plugged in, there's about a 50/50 chance that my mbp crashes. Ridiculous! Another negative is the painful lag when working in adobe programs or sketch. My fully upgraded machine suddenly slows to a crawl when I'm plugged into this monitor. Apparently Apple didn't give the mbp's enough guts to handle their own monitors. The last major negative is the frequent static/fuzzy screens that flash on and off when waking up my machine. On the flip side this usually indicates that my computer isn't going to crash, however it takes about 30-45 seconds for the monitor to display my desktop after strobe-like static flashing.

TLDR: Great image. Horrible user experience. Monitor must be unplugged at all times when not using your computer or else risk a total system crash and reboot.

    Terrible burn in

    • Written by Eduardo P from Sherman Oaks

The screen has insane burn-in/image retention after a couple months use. Putting up any white image on the screen for about a minute or so will leave it there burned in for hours/days. I have never seen it this bad on any other monitor.
