Crashes MBP Touch Bar all the time

    • Written by Marcel T from Wateringen

I bought this monitor because Apple recommended it with my new MacBook Pro 2016 with touch bar. My MBP works flawlessly, but as soon as I plug it into the monitor, it will crash randomly. When my MBP goes to sleep, it crashes consistently, losing your work. The monitor screen keeps switching on and off every minute, and again crashes every 2nd or 3rd time.

Terrible quality. I am a fan of Apple products, but this monitor is really poor quality. Very disappointing.

    AVOID!!!!

    • Written by Maciej Z from Crowthorne

After Jobs died Apple is not what it used to be. This is a perfect example. This replaced excellent Apple Display. But since apple display was one of truly great products (not an appliance you have to throw away every season, so Apple can make more money), this LG is absolute rubbish:

    1. Although the screen quality is rather good, you cannot really use it. It fails to wake up
    2. If you use WiFi at home - it will not work either for unexplained reasons...

Buy only if price drops below 300 pounds. Otherwise choose something different, save yourself loads of cash and avoid stress and frustration.

Reviews are spot on - this is JUNK

    • Written by Lindsey J from Amarillo

This deserves a zero star rating. I read the reviews, I did my homework, I SAW all the bad things people said and I bought it anyway thinking maybe people got a faulty product and that I would be luckier. Nope. My fault and lesson learned. This display goes blank about half the time the computer goes into 'sleep mode' and won't wake up again. At this point, I have to unplug it from the laptop (BRAND NEW MacBook pro with Touch Bar - purchased alongside this monitor) and do a hard restart. Happens at least two times a day but as much as five times a day. Productivity is effected, time wasted and money wasted. I am DISGUSTED with this item and that Apple sells it. SHAME ON YOU APPLE FOR CONTINUING TO SELL THIS ITEM!

    Terrible Monitor

    • Written by Andrew I from Coeur d Alene

I purchased a 2017 Macbook Pro with USB-C ports so I needed to find something to replace my really nice, lovable, Apple Thunderbolt Display, which worked super well with my old Macbook Pro.

This new UltraFine 5K Display is really awful. I just purchased my 2nd one, only because the display itself is closest to what I had with the Apple Thunderbolt Display. The reason it's awful is that even though my 2nd one is the latest and greatest version, it still flickers. Brand new, and it just randomly starts flickering. No router nearby or anything like that. Secondly the thing I detest is the sound. It went backwards in technology about 20 years. The volume increments are laughable, and the sound quality is just awful.

The display itself, is nice to look at. That's it's only redeeming factor. And if this thing didn't flicker on me, I'd probably give it 3 stars since I can always just purchase a good quality Bluetooth speaker. However, on my previous Apple monitors, I could always depend on them having really great sound.

    Nothing but trouble

    • Written by Kees D from Utrecht

Please Apple, reintroduce your own display. My old 4K Thunderbolt display always worked perfectly. This LG Ultrafine gives me nothing but trouble. Needs calibration every single time I start up. Since OSX High Sierra 10.13.1 the screen is blurry. LG Screen Manager 2.08 does not react. Sigh... Cost a lot though & sells through Apple Store, so my expectations were high enough...

Beware not a good display even after firmware update

    • Written by Christina J

    Hello,

We bought a few of these LG 5K displays for our office and out of the 4 we bought, 3 of them all have the same issue. There is massive ghosting on these displays. We even installed the latest LG Firmware fix and that did not do anything, in fact, it made matters worse. Also if you ever have problems you have to call LG Support and not Apple since its a LG Product.

I cannot recommend these displays. They are problematic and don't live up to the expensive price tag.

MAC Pro (Late 2013) down for the count

    • Written by Alex C from Albuquerque

If only I could give this ill begotten piece of glass negative stars! Purchased to replace my 15 year old Apple Cinema Display, it has crashed my MAC Pro enough times via Kernal Panic that I had to rebuild the SSD.

I don't believe Steve would have stood for this kind of customer abuse. If you recommend something, you better have tested it to the Apple standard! Or are trying to tell us something?

    Returning ASAP.

Major Quality Control Issues - Don't buy this Monitor!

    • Written by Harry M from Whitman

For the first week it was great, now it's nothing but a black screen that crashes my 15" Late 2016 MacBook Pro with touch bar. The LG app that it comes with freezes, the screen can sometimes be brought to life for 30 minutes or so before it starts flickering for a minute or two and then goes dark. Sometimes I can get it working temporarily by unplugging the Thunderbolt 3 cable it comes with, unplugging the monitor's power cord and then rebooting my MacBook Pro but sometimes that doesn't work either. It used to cause my MacBook Pro to crash with it but lately that's not happening, only the monitor crashes. I'm an Apple Business Unit customer so I purchased two of these LG 5K's, one for my downtown office and one for my home office, hoping for a seamless plug & play experience. All I got was instead was a Dark Screen. AVOID THIS PRODUCT, IT'S GOT SERIOUS DEFECTS

A huge step backwards from the Thunderbolt Displays of past

    • Written by Kenneth F from Blacklick

Image panel itself is great but this does not deliver on the promise of being a single cable solution for an on the go professional. No network, no Thunderbolt support for downstream devices means no effective way of connecting to and using external storage. Buggy/inconsistent support by macOS leads to lots of visual artifacts/glitches. Very disappointing.

See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil

    • Written by Dustin R from Reno

This monitor regularly crashes my new Late 2016 MacBook Pro (with touch bar). You routinely have to restart the computer after disconnecting and reconnecting the Thunderbolt cable.

Other annoyances come from the sound, which is ear bleeding horrific. The lowest setting is incredibly loud and sounds like too much treble. The speakers crack at full volume.

The webcam goes undetected a lot of times. A restart with the thunderbolt cable plugged in usually fixes the issue.

I am not the only one that has these issues. A quick search will show you others have the issues and Apple and LG has done nothing to fix it. Stay far far far away from this monitor. Apple should be ashamed they partnered with LG to create this monitor. Massive failure.

    Does not work, flickers

    • Written by Christopher P from Somerville

Monitor arrived today and the picture flickered on or off when using with a brand new 2016 15" MBP! Could not get a picture for more than 20-30 seconds. I called LG support and they said the following:

    1. Monitor will not work near a WiFi router!
    2. MacBook must be positioned to the left or front of the monitor. Seriously?
    3. I might have a defective cable; they are sending a new one but I'm probably going to return this because they said it could take 10 business days to arrive.

Sound and charging do work, but the volume is uncontrollable. It is extremely loud on even the lowest volume settings.

Unbelievable issues for a nearly $1,000 display that was touted as designed for the new MacBook Pro.

Could be great, but is not right now.

    • Written by Sunjay V from Harrow

Apple products used to just work, that was the beauty of them, No fussing around, no complicated configuration, they just worked.
I cannot believe that Apple are selling a product on their own online store that has some basic flaws. This appears to be happening more and more and as much as I want to love this, I can't right now. I have invested a lot of money in a new MBP 2016 15inch and this LG 5K display.
The number one problem is that the display does not wake up from sleep when it is connected to my MBP (and the MBP is in closed lid mode/clamshell). So in order to wake it I have to remove my MBP from it's vertical dock, open the lid of the laptop and wake it up using it's own trackpad or keyboard.
BUT....that does not work either!!! The thing just crashes! Completely unresponsive. So I have to hard reboot the MBP.
This is not acceptable LG/Apple. Yes this can probably be fixed with a software update, but why does this basic function not work out of the box. Just on that principle I will be returning mine and waiting till someone else comes up with a solution that just works.

1 Failed in the first few weeks and it's replacement failed 6 months later

    • Written by Walter B from Roswell

I purchased two of these in late march. One has worked flawlessly, the other started getting video flickering issues a few weeks into using them. Apple allowed me to exchange the defective monitor and all was good (kinda) until late September.

The replacement monitor would not turn on (show a picture) and was causing my mac to freeze when it was plugged in. Currently waiting on LG to contact me with return instructions.

If I had to do this all over again I would not have purchased this monitor. They are beautiful but the reliability or lack there of is incredibly scary.

    Really Not Worth the Trouble

    • Written by Jason C from Chicago

I use two of these with a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) and have been mostly disappointed.

The display itself is excellent. Brightness exceeds that of the MacBook Pro's. Color is among the best I've seen, but I'm not a photography professional so take that with a grain of salt. Screen size is perfect for the resolution. The backlighting has very little bleeding or unevenness.

The design is mediocre, as many have pointed out. The only feature that stands out is the ability to charge my MacBook Pro via the same cable(s) that it connects with. Beyond that, things are pretty pointless. The machine you'll be using these with already has more-than-capable speakers and a webcam, so why waste cost and space on these? There is also a lack of swivel on the stand, and the tilt adjustment is simply "adequate". Thankfully the height is pretty flexible, and the metal base gives it a bit more stability. Lack of shielding has to be mentioned even though my router is nowhere near the monitors just because of how glaring the oversight was.

That's only the start of the problems. Up until a few months ago, waking up the MacBook Pro while these were connected frequently resulted in kernel panics and/or sudden forced reboots. Although that appears to be resolved through a macOS update, other issues persist like intense flickering during notification displays, repositioned windows (many of which end up nearly off-screen), and occasionally confused arrangements which flip my left and right monitors and make me drag all the windows back and forth if I want to return to my previous workflow. So much for productivity!

I could go on and on, but Apple's review word limit tells me this is enough for now.

Sounds problems and causes MBP 2016 to crash

    • Written by Darian S from Pleasanton

The sound level is broken on this display. The range is 1..16. 1 is too soft and 2 is too loud. Something was not calibrated. My MBP will continually crash (hard reboot needed) when it is unplugged in clamshell mode.

The only good thing is I can still return it.

Waste of good money - non-responsive customer support

    • Written by ROBERT T from Washington

I have struggled with this monitor for several months to find a cure for the unstable and at times disappearing cursor or mouse pointer associated with my MacBook Pro 2016. The cursor actually works on the MacBook screen but not on the LG 5K display. I have tried LG and Logitech software, etc. and it is clearly an LG display problem. I have tried different mice brands, with the same result. I get no response from LG service when I try to contact them. It has made the screen virtually useless. I have now purchased a Dell 4K display that I use with no problems whatsoever.
