    LG 5K Disaster

    • Written by David W from littleton

Received the monitor today and it worked great for a solid fifteen minutes. The first time the computer went to sleep that was it. I could not get the monitor to fire up again. A call to Apple support yielded not better results. Apple support wanted meet to book an appointment at the Genius Bar for mid next week. No thanks! This monitor is going to get returned. I should return my 2016 MBP 15 at the same time. It has been nothing but trouble since I received it. I've never had so much trouble with a new lap top before. Mostly with how it interacts with my Thunderbolt displays. At least I can get the Thunderbolt displays to render an image with a couple of reboots.

    Don't expect much...

    • Written by Greg E from Atlanta

This display is OK for what it is, but don't expect 5K resolution, and don't expect the internal USB-C hub to be particularly useful...
I have had this display for nearly a year, and used it with two different 2016 MacBook Pro's (and three different motherboards between them). None of the MacBook PROs have ever offered me a 5K resolution option. The "default for display" is 2560x1440 and no scaled resolution better than 3200x1800 is available. This doesn't bother me so much as 2560x1440 is pretty adequate. However, more problematic is that the internal USB-C hub is terrible. One of the basic utilities of this display is that it can offer one-wire-docking for your MacBook, and if you're on a wired network this is accomplished by having a USB-C -to-ethernet adapter (I'm using Apple's) plugged into the back of your monitor so that you get networking when you plug your mac in as well as video, mic, speakers and camera. But if you actually *use* the network, the LG USB-C hub can't handle it. For me, this evidences itself in video conferencing. I can get on a video conference, but generally after a few minutes the network drops off, then the MacBook doesn't see the LG's camera, microphone or speakers anymore. I recently sent the LG display in for repair in the hopes of addressing this issue, but it has returned unchanged. (And the notes on the repair ticket don't mention the problem, instead saying I sent it in for "video problems". Apple takes no responsibility for this display and LG Tech support is not particularly useful.)

    Lemon that was DOA

    • Written by Philip H from Richmond

I bought the first version of the Ultrafine Display in 2016 and it was one of the defective models that kept crashing the computer and later was recalled. I gave the second version of the 21" display a try a few weeks ago and it finally worked. It was sold with defective firmware but the updates fixed the insanely loud audio. After some use, I realized that that the size wasn't big enough.

So, I exchanged it for the super-expensive 27" model. It turned out to be DOA.

Pros: none, since it arrived DOA
Cons: very expensive, looks cheap and ugly, technical issues

    Flooded with issues

    • Written by Marissa M

Bought this approximately three weeks ago and have worked with customer service / technical support from LG and still having issues. Random dropouts, video going black and then my USB's stop working all together and have to reboot. LG said they are working on a fix for USB problems, will be a few months before they can fix. Also had a message that appeared stating I had a kernel panic and had to shut down my computer.

For $1,299.99, I was expecting at least a stable machine.

    TERRIBLE! Shame on you Apple!

    • Written by Anthony M

If I could give this display zero stars, I certainly would! From the moment I bought this display it has nothing but problems problems and yes...MORE problems! :-(

I am sorry to say Apple, you shouldn't be selling this display for LG given all the issues folks have reported. I bought mine from the recommendation of one of your live chat reps, and boy did I make a mistake. I have only had the display for three days and now the display won't turn on! It was flickering the first two days, and now nothing. LG support is horrendous and you can't even purchase Apple Care for this thing since it's not an Apple product.

    Shame on you, Apple.

Poorly built product, Apple should be ashamed

    • Written by Shareef Y from Lockport

Non-stop issues. USB-C connected devices don't work unless unplugged, and then plugged back in. Display on 15" MBP stays off after being disconnected. Interference issues. I know this is an LG display, but Apple stated they assisted, and it's either Apple's incompetent or they straight lied, because this display doesn't fall anywhere near the qualify of Apple products.

    DON'T BUY IT!!!!!

    • Written by Haoran W from San Diego

This 5K monitor is not fully compatible with bootcamp, often showing low resolution video output.
After using it for a month, it suddenly gives no video output, while audio input and output still works, how weird it is!
If I still have the chance I would return it with no doubt, however, I have passed the 14 days return period so that I have to go for LG to let them repair it for me.
If you are considering this product, just don't buy it, otherwise you really need it.

    Issue after issue

    • Written by Carlos V from Miami

I have a new MacBook Pro connected to 5K display. First problem is every now and then the image gets all garbled. Needs to restart to fix it. Other issue is that occasionally, every 30 seconds the screen of the 5k goes black and turns back on after a few seconds. Old apple Cinema Display worked fine for 5 years until I had to change it for the new Mac.

Poor Picture Quality, Glitchy Functionality, Limited Flexibility

    • Written by Paul M from New York

While this display can have a nice image, and it can be convenient, it's rarely so. The display suffers from severe image retention issues, leaving ghost images of your recent windows all over, the USB ports on the back are slow (USB 2.1, even though they use a USB-C connector), and have frequent issues, the display is often glitchy when restarting/waking from sleep/being plugged in. There also isn't a way to use an HDMI or Display Port cable with it, so external GPUs aren't an option, and you can't plug in an additional source. All this from a display that's significantly more expensive than the competition.

Not a reliable display many problems

    • Written by Sean D

Bought this unit about two months ago and installed all the firmware updates as LG mentioned to do. Still problem after problem, from the USB hub (not recognizing devices) from the black screens to kernal panics. This display is plagued with problems, and cant believe Apple endorses this one.

I went back to my old Apple trusted Thunderbolt display and love it, very reliable and gets the job done, absolutely perfect quality and Apple reliability. In a business, we need something reliable.

    don't waste your money

    • Written by William O from Alexandria

OK, the picture is beautiful. But that's it.

when connected to my 2016 MacBook Pro, it's slow to start up. It's on it's way to LG for repair for the 2nd time in 7 months. This time no video, but it does work with audio and power for the machine.

If I could have my money back, I'd take it.

Do NOT recommend , cannot recommend this monitor

    • Written by Henry W

This one is just not good. I am a true die hard Apple fan, but this one, I cannot endorse. Too many problems, even after the firmware update still same issues. I dont just have one single issue, its multiple failures, and I checked the reviews on this display and others are having the exact same problems i am. Biggest problem I have with it is that sometimes the display just shuts off on its own without any intervention from me...Then i have to go through a long process of resetting it and calling LG support. Also the picture quality isn't even close to that of my old Apple Thunderbolt, I really do think the Thunderbolt was sharper and a cleaner picture.

    Recommend to stay away.

    Pretty but not functional

    • Written by Sterling C from Ogden

First things first, the display looks gorgeous. Both the design and the quality of the picture are great. However, this display does NOT function well with a mac. Around 20% of the time, disconnecting or connecting my brand new MacBook Pro will completely bring my system to a halt. The screen(s) will glitch and you will be forced to restart your computer. DO NOT BUY.

Bottom line, this monitor is not good

    • Written by Billy K

I have really tried my best to work with the problems with this monitor, but ended up returning it. It just has too many issues. The picture quality is nice, but if it wont work right, its useless, especially for the price LG is asking for it. I expect, for $1000.00 this machine would be great with no issues at all. Mine has a sound problem, blue and red hues are off, and also would shut off completely all by itself, at random.

    Arrived Damaged

    • Written by Robert E from St Simons

Tons of issues with this monitor.

Arrived with the panel feeling loose and not connected to the top bezel. Within a couple days a solid purple line right down the middle of the monitor vertically appeared. This is a line between the two images being rendered and stitched together. I can push on the bezel to make the line go away but as soon as I move my hand its back.

Random disconnecting issues and slow laggy performance on a brand new late 2016 touchbar macbook.

Really disappointed that there isn't a set replacement effort in place to fix the early adopters flawed displays.

    Random Flickering

    • Written by kevin D from Seattle

Every few hours I get a random black flicker. My monitor is not close to any other electronic devices such as WAPs, appliances, time capsules, etc. The closest device is a coworkers laptop at 14 feet away. Apple has offered no support. This monitor is connected directly to a brand new 15 inch touchbar MBP.
