    Unpredictable Product

The commercials / videos for this product are outstanding. However, the User Experience was TERRIBLE. Every time I wanted to use it -- for customers or for myself -- I had to update the firmware. And each time, they moved features or buttons, which meant I could NOT use the product.

That said, I was careful when I used the product. That said, in the FOLLOW mode, the drone took off away from me and was soon out of range. Needless to say it is LONG GONE. A good product design would have the product shut down, hold position, SOMETHING / ANYTHING was it was out of range. I could not reconnect and simply watched my $$$ fly off into the distance.

SAVE your $$$. Buy something else.

    Apple has rips off retiree

Where to start on this product? Firstly Apple should be ashamed of itself to be peddling this rubbish. My retired mother dug into her pension to surprise me with this birthday gift that costs $680CDN. When I told her it flew hundreds of metres away from me and landed in the bottom of a swamp on its first use outdoors, she broke down in tears. This is basically the worst Apple product I have experienced, in hindsight it would have been a lot more fun to smash the drone with a hammer straight out of the box.

    Unpredictable and potentially dangerous

This seemed to be the perfect camera to help my wife and I capture some pretty awesome moments on our upcoming vacation. Had no anticipation of this being a smooth flying drone and was completely ok with the thought of buying a $500 selfie stick, believe it or not. What I'm not ok with is spending $500 for something buggy that unexpectedly runs full speed into a wall, or flys as fast as possible towards my wife, landing by another nearby wall. My experience with Hover got even worse when calling their support line and being notified by their team member that it's ok for the drone to work properly only 50% of the time and had I told them it wouldn't work 90% of the time then there might be something they can do. I purchased based on my confidence in Apple products and the products they endorse. I'm giving 1 star for the portability of the drone but will refuse to take this thing around strangers in fear that it will fly directly at them or me unexpectedly. Every flight has been in optimal lighting conditions with no wind and up to date firmware. Would not recommend.

Erratic flight - good camera - no stabilization

I really like this drone in principle. It's exactly what I'm looking for to take on holiday. Convenient size, lightweight and plenty of flying time to take photos.
However, it's incredibly unreliable at behaving. I tried it a couple of times and the first time in started oscillating towards and away from me then smacked into a wall. The second time I lost control and it smacked up into the ceiling and I lost control and couldn't land it. I'm worried that if I take it on holiday I'm going to lose control and it'll just fly off. The manufacturer has a lot of work to do on the firmware. If the drone loses connection it should stay where it is for a time then automatically land. It's a pity that it doesn't seem to have GPS so it can't come back to where it took off.
Incidentally, this drone is way more noisy that I ever thought it might be. Definitely not recommended for indoor use.
If I'd done more research before I bought it, then I wouldn't have bought it. Overall, love the idea and disappointed with the delivery.

    Bad Batteries

In the manual, it says never leave the batteries in the charger or even the drone. For example charging it and then just unplugging the charger. What this does is breaks the batteries and they will never work or charge again. I saw that in the manual after I noticed the batteries would not even power the drone on even after a first charge. I never did get to fly it.

Now I have to pay another $100 bucks for two replacement batteries or just toss it in the trash. I am past the warranty period due to not testing it out when I got it. Learn from my mistake.

Erratic and controllable, a complete waste of money.

On the very first flight it flew wildly out of control; hitting walls, windows then me in the head. Fortunately I wear glasses and it only scratched them instead of gouging my eye out its socket.

    Nifty Quirky Sad

    The drone is quite well built, the camera is acceptable and firmware updates are frequent. User tracking misses the mark and often randomly chases random strangers that it thinks are its owner. This poor drone would likely have been returned had it not lost its connection with my phone and decided to fly away randomly at full speed while gaining altitude until we could no longer see it. Bye bye drone, bye bye money ;.;

-Build quality is excellent, the carbon fiber housing and blade guards make it tough to break
-The battery life given the size of the drone is great as well, flight times las as long as or longer than advertised
-Includes two batteries and a quick charger dock
    -4k video is nice

-Terrible owner tracking and autonomic functions, chases random people
-Will randomly lose connection to the app and fly away full speed in some random direction often gaining altitude, became irrecoverable this way.
    -No real video stabilization
-You can control the vertical angle the camera points in but this function requires you to swipe on the screen of your phone and is intermittently jerky or fails to work
    -Terrible software
-Nonexistent customer service and manufacturer website not really useful
-No GPS tracking or any tracking/pinging features of any kind, no emergency auto landing feature when it loses connection, no auto hover

    Hover Camera Review

Unlike other reviewers, I wish I could have gotten the original non Apple Version that cost $100 more. The original version included a hard case, spare propellers, and other spare parts. The spare parts do not appear to be purchasable now. The only spare part available is a spare battery directly from Zero Zero Robotics.
    1. Well Made.
    2. Takes excellent Photos.
    3. Long battery life. 10 minutes is a great flight time for a quad this size. Competitors are much less. At 10 minutes it warned it was going to auto land. At 10 minutes 30 seconds it landed.
    4. Has single axis mechanical stabilization of the camera.
    1. Takes terrible 1080P video because of a poorly implemented attempt at video stabilization. Video has bad jello effect. 4K does not use video stabilization and is pretty good.
    2. Poor owner mode tracking. When I tried it in the Livingroom it found my face but as soon as I tried to move it jumped over and started tracking the face on our clock. When I tried it outside it again found my face but when I tried to move it turned and flew away from me. Had to run to try and catch it.
    3. 360 pan mode turns too fast with no way to slow it down.
    4. No spare parts or accessories available for it except for the battery.
    1. Make it possible for the user to turn off video stabilization on 1080P or fix the algorithm so that the video does not look like the camera is looking through a bowl of jello.
    2. Slow down speed in 360 pan mode or better yet make it user settable.
All and All, I really like this drone. I gave it 4 stars. Would have given it five stars if the items above were fixed. I think it is the best of the selfie drones currently available. Takes great done photographs.

    Hover Passport Review

Great little selfie drone. Fits into a large coat pocket. Very well protected so no fear of damage to drone in pocket or in use. (May 2017)

Intuitive and simple to use straight from the box.
Protected propellers so no damage to drone, you or anything else it might touch.
2 batteries a must are included as flight time is 9 minutes per battery.
Comes with a twin battery charger so both batteries can be charged together.
Follow me, orbit and 360 spin modes are all very simple to use.
Great video and photos on wind free days
Can also be controlled from Android devices and ipads as well as iphone.
Typical for Apple products it feel good and looks good. Clever little unfold function.
Very light even with batteries - this will not use up much baggage allowance when you go on holiday.
All video and photos were very simply transferred to my phone for me to post online or email. Could also download from phone to laptop.
It has real time video feed to your controlling phone so I advise getting a quick look at Google Maps satellite view of the area you are flying in case a wind blows your drone away. This way you point the camera down, tell the drone to land and you will know where it is to go and pick it up from.
Displays battery level on iphone screen.

It has a flash but not sure why as it cannot fly in a darkened room due to camera which is used for hover cannot see the ground clearly enough so the drone does not hold position and is very difficult to control. (Maybe I am doing something wrong but I could not control it in a darkened room although I could see clearly.)

Very light so not good for flying in windy conditions.(There is no GPS so if it does get blown away you cannot track it. It does have real time camera view so if you know the area you can work out where the camera is a fly it back manually or land it for collection).
It can only orbit and/or follow a person NOT an object. (Hopefully this can be a future software update).
You need to move smoothly in follow me modes (No sudden changes in direction) as if it looses you from the camera view finder it cannot continue following. Obviously the further you are away from the drone the better as you stay in camera view for longer.
Not waterproof. Not sure if it floats BUT my advice - stay well away from water.
Could do with a take off from the ground mode. It can only start flying when held in the air. (Hopefully a future software update)
Need option to change default manual control as joysticks are best for me but I have to set that each time I use the drone. (Hopefully a future software update)

    It's a wireless selfie-stick

According to the manufacturer's specs, the DoF is 1.2M to 6.7M (4 feet to 22 feet). Anything out of that range will be out of focus. Don't expect any decent-looking scenics.

I really wanted to like this and for this to work. Got it home, followed the procedures, did a firmware update and started to get going inside the house. We have a "bonus" room in our house that has ceilings that are between 15 and 20 fee high and for whatever reason the camera pinned itself on the ceiling on my first three attempts and I was only able to bring it down by using the app and telling it to land. It was unable to find me as an owner and as such "follow" mode did not work. May it would work better outdoors but honestly I was already second guessing myself for getting this over a Mavic, it really needed to wow me and work right out of the box and it didn't. Returned it.

Hover Camera Getting Better and Better

I have had the hover camera since it was first released. At that time it was functional and fun. Since then there have been several firmware and interface updates that have enhanced the performance and usefulness. For instance, it can now recognize an individuals face (after the latest firmware update it asked me to register a new face/owner. you need to look into the camera and move your head from profile to front a few times and it locks into your particular face). This is pretty cool. Then when you start it in a room full of people it will hover around and rotate, looking for your particular face - like a bewildered dog looking for it's owner outside a supermarket.

I can't wait to see what features they add next!

I purchased this camera with the promise that it could do interesting things with AI algorithms, and that's starting to happen in a meaningful and interesting way now.

I should also add that the device is quite safe (in my opinion). I have bumped it off of walls and ceilings and grabbed it out of the air many times. It is durable and the propellers are protected from your fingers.

One thing to note is that this is very noisy indoors - 4 propellers spinning like crazy to keep this thing aloft. All the marketing videos have music tracks, but in reality this is noisy - you won't be sneaking up on anyone.

    Amazing drone. Great for traveling!

I have owned many drones and this one is by far my favorite. I travel a lot and needed a small light weight drone that I can take in my carry on and when I came accross this at CES, I had to get one. The hover camera has completely exceeded my expectations. It is very easy and fun to use. Even if this will be your first drone, this will be perfect for you. Great camera for pictures and videos. They have added so many new features in their new app that its made the already incredible drone even better. I highly recommend!

Quite Good for What It's Supposed to Do

This year I decided to travel a lot alone and as such I wanted an easy to use drone that could help me take awesome pictures. I bought the Hover Camera and it does a pretty decent job.

    - Great photos that my friends are amazed at
    - Super portable that I can store it in my back pack
    - Easy to use and safe. You just unfold it and it flies. No risk of injuring someone because of exposed blades.
    - Good picture quality
    - Quick battery charging

    - Auto follow needs work. Drone easily loses focus on the subject
    - Battery life can be longer
    - Carbon fiber cage already has some damage.
    - Wifi connection with the phone can disconnect leading to scary moments

But if you're looking for a no-frills selfie camera, this is the one to get. My only regret is that it's cheaper in the Apple store. I wish Hover can give rebates to those who invested early in the product.

Great concept & fun to use

Got this as a birthday gift. I absolutely love the design of the camera: lightweight, sleek enclosed propellers, and how it folds open like a book. So far, I've had some fun tinkering around with it outdoors for orbit mode and taking shots from high up, since those features require more space.. and can't get those shots from regular cameras or a selfie stick! Also like the hands free auto-follow function. I can't wait to take it with me on my upcoming trips. The drawback imo is that it's a bit on the noisy side. Would also be a plus if it could record audio... but don't think any drones do so far.

Good - Almost there, but returned it.

I love the idea of this thing. The video demos are awesome and it all looks so seamless and easy to use. Unfortunately, the App interface is not great. I am extremely technical and I had a hard time getting it to work quickly - lots of messing with things and often the drone just didn't want to follow. After a few failed attempts with a group, and more than a few "how much did you pay for that thing?!", I decided it just wasn't ready and needed to be returned. I am hopeful that a 2nd or 3rd generation will improve - I'll be back to try again at that point.

    Really cool

Although Hover Camera has some flaws, other drones are also selling for $1500+. While my friends have some of these other drones which are cool for taking pictures of mountains and trees, what I really like about Hover is that its great at capturing people. I don't have to worry about safety and getting close to it as its blades are fully enclosed in carbon fiber. And it's generally quite easy to use. Good effort overall.

    Bought last week

Bought at an Apple store last week and here are my thoughts. Photo and video quality is good but just make sure you switch to 4K in settings. I shot some footage in 1080 to begin with because it was automatically set to that and it wasn’t what I wanted it to be. 4K is way better looking though. The follow stuff is fun but I prefer using the manual settings. This way, I can easily adjust the positioning of the drone and lens angle. But I like that it has both options in case i don't want to spend time setting up a shot.
It would be nice if it had obstacle avoidance in the future. Right now I have to be careful to fly in pretty open spaces. I’ve had a few crashes when I haven't been so careful but the drone is really a sturdy thing and no damage, so far.

    Decent drone

Bought a while ago and there's a lot of like, and some drawbacks.
    - What I really like: Design is really nice, a really good travel size drone. The body tracking feature is also pretty slick. Im still getting used to the new tracking process in the new app but so far so good. Gesture control took me a little to get the hang of but I think it's going to come in handy at upcoming family reunions for group photos, as long as it can recognize my hand out of others.
    - What I don't like: The 10 min battery life is too short. I bought a few extras because of this. also the noise can be extreme in peaceful settings but i have another drone and sound is comparable i guess. Still doesn't make it comfortable...
if you're looking for something hassle free and small and battery/noise isn't a deal breaker, Hover is a good option

ordered and not impressed, lack of REAL information when purchased

My expectations were high due to a few video reviews that seem to be more of paid videos than genuine reviews. Here are the key points that I couldn't find online when I ordered the drone. I have returned the drone for a full refund via Apple.

*Battery life is 5 to 10 min if you are lucky
    *20 min to recharge batteries
*orbit/follow function randomly loses it's target, causing the drone to panic search.
*the camera clearly has an automated vertical swivel yet you can't seem to adjust the camera angle, control only allows flight control of up, down, left, right, forward, and backward.. this swivel feature of the camera should be manually controlled by the user.
