Computer is 3 years old and I'm buying my 3rd adapter. They get extremely hot and end up fraying where the cord meets.

    Not happy

    • Written by John G from PORTAGE

I am a newer Apple user and because of all the people over the years who have sworn by Apple products I finally took the plunge and bought a MacBook Pro. I admit I do like it but am sorely disappointed in it overall. The charger is a piece of junk. The cable frayed on me in only under 2 years of owning it. I am afraid it will short out if I don't buy another but all the reviews state that the replacements fail in a short time as well and I don't have $80 dollars to dish out every year to keep replacing these things. I'll agree with others as well on the design flaw of the magsafe connector. It is too big and comes off too easily because of the leverage applied by the cable and accidentally hitting it with your hand. Drives me nuts. Apple should actually make that part of the cable detachable from the AC/DC adapter not the nice thick well built wall cord. I mean come on. Whoever designed this either wasn't thinking at all or did it on purpose in order to make Apple more money. I cannot believe that a company that makes computers and calls it's tech support Geniuses could make something so obviously poor in design. I've had numerous problems with the MacBook itself as well. I am a computer geek and as such take much better care of my stuff than most others do so I know it's not me being careless. It's plain just poor quality and better quality is the reason I switched to Apple in the first place. If there is no quality left in Apple products then I might as well go back to the cheaper PC.

    works as intended

    • Written by Ulas S from Dayton

One of them was broken like the other reviewers indicated but when I used 2 adaptors one for home and one for work, I have been using it for the last 2 years without any breakage in the cable. I love the magnetic capability, it is softer than the first itreration, which saved my laprop many times. Thus, I disagree with the other reviewers in this respect. I dis not like the 90 degree version since that was dragging the laptop and laptop could fell to the ground, I had this issue several times. Last, I believe this is much better design than usb-c based too. What can be improved: well, the end cable does not have to be this thin, then all the problem will go away, people do not have to wrap the cable but add a "taper-based" cable holder as other PC companies like Lenovo. I think Apple can improve many laptop items by checking Lenovo site and testing them like best keyboards. Eliminate this "thin" madness, then everything will be ok.

Always detaches, cable is frayed, billion dollar company still sells faulty power adapter to customers for $85 for a weak wire problem. Very sad. Company is too big to care about the small customer issues.

I love your products Apple but these are garbage

    • Written by Adam M from Golden

Why are you still producing these pieces of cr*p? They last 2 years max before the cable frays and fails. And why do I have to replace the entire adapter when it is only the cable from adapter to plug that fails? Please do better.

    Dreadful Quality

    • Written by Declan G from belfast

I always look after my gear, especially cables. In my studio, I have cables that are decades old and look and perform as new. You cannot, however, take care of something that is badly made. I'm just about to buy my FOURTH MagSafe charger for my 2014 MacBook pro. The first two simply stopped working without any obvious signs of trauma or fault. Apple replaced the first under warranty but since then, I've been on my own. The lead on my third MagSafe charger turned a horrible brownish-yellow colour over the course of a few months before stopping working. I'm not an electrician, but from googling, it would suggest that it's overheating causing the problem.

I generally love apple hardware but this power adapter is rubbish. Unfortunately, it's necessary and here I go, about to give Apple another £80 for something that will probably only last a couple of years.

Afraid it will start a fire

    • Written by Ceanne F from Nottingham

This charger gets so incredibly hot. I can't even leave it on my couch because it leaves marks from how hot it gets. It frays like crazy. The entire end of the cord looks like a dog chewed through it. I'm afraid it's going to catch my house on fire - especially because I can't leave it on the couch or it leaves burn marks, so I have to put it on a blanket to protect the couch. I'm buying another one, but I'm sure the same thing's going to happen. I'm only replacing it because I feel like I shouldn't have fraying cords on a product that gets incredibly hot now that I've got a baby. I'm sure it will burn him one day.

So much fake chargers in the world?

    • Written by Laurens K from Haren

I just charged my Late 2013 15 inch MacBook Pro and checked the power adapter from my 85W MagSafe 2 charger. It was really hot and I thought: this is not good, what is going on with my charger... I went searching on the web and found out there are a lot of the same issues with the charger. The reviews on the Apple Store site are really bad, and people are having the same issue, the charger get really hot. While searching the web you will find a lot of fake Apple MagSafe chargers and I had to find out if I had one too. I checked it with a YouTube video and found out my MagSafe Charger is fake too. My question is: how is it possible that there are so much stores online and offline that sell fake MagSafe chargers for nearly the same price as the real ones? After a few minutes of research on the web, I have discovered this problem is a daily driver for a lot of MacBook users... I have to say it is really dangerous to charge your Mac like this (if you have a fake charger). I also think that more than a half of these reviews is about the fake chargers (the dangerous ones). Thats not good because I believe the real chargers are good and do not deserve bad reviews. If you need a MacBook charger, buy them on Apple's site or in an Apple Store because the chance you have a fake charger is real high if you buy them somewhere else. And Apple please do something with this problem, I think I speak for a lot of people right now...

    The worst product from apple

    • Written by Mohamed A from Cairo

I change it basically every year!!!!
I bought my macbook pro in 2016 and changed this magsafe 3 times for the same reason!!!
It stops working while connected to the laptop, it just stops... the light turns off and that’s it.
    The same defection every time.
Power supply unit is fine and apple care doesn’t have any clue every time but to buy a new one!!!!
Which is really really really over priced for a nondurable product.

    Absolutely Horrible

    • Written by Sarah E from Langley

I’ve used apple products for years. But every single year, this charger needs to be replaced (the most recent is only 8 months due to adapter failure). It is the most poorly designed charger I have come across. Either it will fray, or the adapter itself will short out. And the apple service centers will take every possible opportunity to void even a valid warranty. Please, please reconsider purchasing a MacBook if you are not willing to pay at least $100 per year for an extremely poor product.

    Poor Quality Charger

    • Written by Maedla G from toronto

After one year of use my charger turned yellow and began to fray. After reading reviews I decided not to buy a replacement charger because it seemed like a total waste of money. Not only is this charger extremely hot, but ever 5 seconds the magnetic disconnects if you move the laptop slighlty. 2 years since fraying and now I have 2 feet of the wire wrapped in electrical tape.

Funny thing is my l shaped charger for 4 years and never experience these problems.

    Rubbish Product!

    • Written by Adrian M from Foster City

I have owned and used Apple products since the late 1990's. I am (and will remain) a true fan of Apple. I have/had almost all their products (iPhone, iPad, iMac, MacBook Pro, iPod, etc.) but this is easily the worst product they have ever made. I am on the third adapter in as many years just on my MacBook Pro. For all other Apple laptops I have also had to purchase multiple power adapters. It is apparent to me that Apple will never improve their adapters. Does anyone at Apple even care that this product has such a low rating? The durability is questionable at best and the functionality of the MagSafe 2 is almost non-existant necessitating the purchase of third-party adapters. Look at the negative reviews stretching back years!

    Hot to Touch

    • Written by Paul P from Toronto

Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter for my 15" MacBook Pro gets extremely hot to touch and I feel that it's a fire hazard. Also, the cable from the base of charger to connection at the laptop is cracked open so that wires are exposed, possibly from cable being hot & softening due to overheating. I expected this power adapter to be the best in quality from an Apple product, considering what I paid for my laptop.

    Extremely dangerous...

    • Written by Alice J from OLDHAM

I've had my MacBook now for about 3 years (the Mid-2015 pro) and the worst part about it is the chargers. My first one failed on me after about 11 months of usage. I do use it daily, but the fact the plug pins were sparking whenever I even touched them against the socket was crazy, then it just stopped charging at all.
After weeks of complaining (with them telling me they could charge me if they found it was my fault it was sparking?) I finally received a replacement a week inside of my year warranty.

The cable I've had since has literally turned yellow at the end of the wire where its overheated so much its caused wire damage. It's horrendously hot to touch even after just minutes of it being plugged in, particularly the MagSafe adapter part. I keep putting it off to buy a new one because of how expensive they are, plus the fact I've had two now that have been faulty. It's just not good enough. I buy expensive products to use daily and I expect the best quality for that, like any costumer would. Now I've been left with basically an £80 fee just to buy another so it doesn't do permanent damage to my laptop, or me.

    Extremely Disappointed...

    • Written by H L from Hastings

I'll preface this by mentioning that I've been a Mac user for 25 years. The thing I love most about Apple products has (until now) been the durability. I love that my three iPhones I've had over the years have each lasted 4+ years; it's nice to trust a product will last when you're investing good money into it. My iMac desktop from 2001 still works great, but it didn't have wifi connectivity technology, so that is the only reason I made an upgrade to my first MacBook Pro laptop. That laptop still works, but I upgraded to my current MacBook Pro after seven great years of everyday use on my first one. I LOVE my current MacBook Pro! It is reliable and works great for daily writing and graphic design use. But, I digress....

Anyway, for the first time in two and a half decades, I am extremely disappointed with an Apple product! The design and quality (or lack thereof) of this charger is upsetting and not what I've come to expect as a longtime daily user of Apple products. I take excellent care of my computer and accessories, but this is now the SECOND 85W MagSafe2 Power Adapter that has gone bad already since upgrading to this computer. I never had this issue with my previous L-shaped charger for my old MacBook Pro laptop. Now I spend thousands on a wonderful new computer, and I'm spending $80 per year on replacement chargers. That is ridiculous is you ask me. I'm not sure if it's just what the skinny part of the cord is made out of or what, but it gets kind of brittle and starts to fray way too easily. Now I have exposed copper at various places along this charger, so I have to shovel out another $80 to replace it. I am just getting frustrated because I know it will happen again with the next one.

    One for each year?!?!

    • Written by Janet K from Alameda

It’s three years since I bought my Mac and O am on my 3rd adopter. Besides getting too hot while on charge it now doesn’t charge. The magnet holds and sticks but the charger light indicator quits after 5 seconds and only to check it has stopped charging. I have to either have it pushed against something that can keep tight or hold it to charge. What’s annoying is the charger comes with this extra long power adaptor extension which I hardly use so now I have three in very good condition sitting in my cabinet...for what?!?!! Why create such waste?!?! Someone tell me where to donate them and I’ll pass them on.
