Apple super drive not up to par

Not really pleased with this device. It worked for a while (not the fastest, but it did work) final straw, was when I was totally unable to eject a dvd from inside of it. Paid a serviceman to extract it, after all my attempts failed. He got the DVD out and then told me that it probably was not going to be reliable anymore. Very disappointed; it was an expensive expenditure and the results were not up to what I paid for it.

I've kept this item in its original box since I bought it in 2015. It's in perfect condition. It was fine for a while. Over the last year it now decides to spit out CDs mid import and its almost impossible to make it work properly now. Don't buy this.

    Very disappointed

Unable to get my USB Superdrive to work. My iMac doesn’t show that it recognizes it, and it just reads my discs and ejects them, whereas my MacBookPro, and my Windows laptop have no problems with any of my disks

    It's awesome

I use this with my Windows computer, and it works great! I just installed the bootcamp ODD driver from Apple, and I can read and write onto discs. Would highly recommend

I'm having all of the problems other people mention. It used to be I could insert a CD and the music would automatically download to iTunes. And this is MY CD. I'm not hijacking anyone's music. It's downloading the disk but going to a file called Delicious Library 3, but I can't play music from there. I've also had many problems trying to burn disks. So, where can I find a player that will work? This is not it!

    Very expensive frisbee

Probably the worst Apple product I have ever bought.

Endless problems of disks not being read. Spinning round and round and round and round and round for ages and ages. Then the disks get stuck in the thing and you are like "Oh my" how do I get it out. Do you bang it, open it up, try talking nicely to it....that didn't work.

And NO you can't eject it the usual ways because OSX doesn't recognise that there is even an external DVD drive attached. After hunting the interwebs I found the solution. You have to use the terminal with this command "drutil eject external" Seriously why would you make a product like this!!

Avoid this like the plague. There are plenty of better and more advanced alternatives out there for a fraction of the price!

It doesn't even deserve one star.

The "Super Drive" A1379 is a dud!

I guess I had too much confidence in the Apple reputation. This is an overpriced piece of junk. It simply is not reliable and will not burn a DVD of like kind, that has been copied many times by my old reliable MacBookPro with the internal drive. Never again!!

    Works Great

I have burned about 20 dvd's with my Superdrive, and have not had any problems. Everything has stayed in place and hasen't moved since I got it.

Had a few uses out of this and I would've given it a better rating for how well it burns discs and functions as a Super Drive. However, I recently had an issue with a disc not being able to eject and I tried all the normal things I read online and finally had to OPEN it up and get the disc out. Upon inspection, it looks like a piece has been bent somehow (from sitting on my desk and not being moved) and now is the culprit for discs being stuck, but also scratching the C R A P out of it on insertion and ejection. Would not buy again.

    Yep, mine broke too.

This thing was always temperamental and never easy to use. And then one day, it finally broke. Good riddance.

    What a piece of junk

Ive used this maybe 3 times, and now my iMac doesnt even recognize it. After spending an hour on the phone with support, now I have to take it in to the genius bar, and presumably, wait another hour or two before they try to sell me a new one. Instead, I'm researching other brands that are compatible with the Mac. Livid.

5 stars for the price, convenience and functionality

I was using a higher end brand play and rip CDs to my external, after my high-end CD player that I used the same way I decided to not dish out 4 figures and pick up this external Apple USB SuperDrive. It just works, plug and play and allows me to still use the software for keeping the same Redbook CD quality. I've used it on my desktop and has traveled in my backpack and no mechanical issues with all the traveling. I do miss some of the features of the $1000 plug unit I had but after using the SuperDrive it just works for my needs.

(Might not suit your needs but I've found it to suit mine without remotely breaking the bank, YMMV).

I would go higher in stars but it is not for a new MB Pro

New MacBook Pro laptops have no 'standard' USB ports, only USB C ports, and that is what is built into the drive. If you are using some type up 'USB HUB' or the very common PURGO adapter, it will not work. Apple should really let people know and/or just plain state that the drive is not meant for the newest MB Pro!

When plugged into a HUB of some type, apparently it is not getting enough power to function properly. The MB Pro recognizes the device, but says, ...'plug it in to USB port on your machine...'.

If you do purchase one you will need an additional straight USB to USB c adapter.

I spoke with senior advisors at Apple support and that is how we came to this conclusion.

If you have an old MB Pro with the old fashioned USB port, buy it, if you don't, go elsewhere.

    It works!

It works fine for me. I have years of experience with CD [starting with 2x] and DVD drives, internal and external, Mac and PC. I've had no complaints or issues wit the Apple USB SuperDrive while burning single and dual layer DVDs full of design files for print and on-screen. Roxio Toast had no issues handling the file organization and DiskTracker still works cataloguing the disks [works as well as ever].

    Happy with the Superdrive.

First off I wasn't happy that the new iMac didn't come with a built in CD/DVD player. Secondly, after reading the reviews I was frankly stunned that they were so negative. I called my go to guy at the Apple Store and asked his opinion about the Superdrive. He said that he'd never had any problems and was surprised that the reviews were negative. So, I ordered one. Out of the box it has functioned as it should. I've had no issues with speed, hanging up, ejecting the discs or copying files. Still not happy about having to tie up a USB port, but it works smoothly and recommend it. I wonder how many people who wrote the negative reviews bought their versions somewhere other than an Apple Store.
