MacBook Air doesn't recognize it - DONT BUY

I purchased this to have cd backups for my important files.
It didn't work right out of the box. I even contacted an
Apple Support person, and he said the superdrive is not
being recognized. So I cannot burn files to the CD.
It will play a dvd, and if I want to eject
it, I have to go into: terminal and type in: drutil eject.
Totally not up to Apple standards. A waste of money.

Surprised Apple Has Not Done Something About This Product

I purchased this drive for my large screen, top-of-the-line iMac. I also own another large iMac purchased in 2011. As a professional photographer, a great deal of my data is stored on CD's and DVD's. Although my older iMac's internal disc drive continues to work perfectly, this new external drive fails continuously. I'm rarely able to get it to read my well-cared-for discs. The disc is inserted, it sounds like it's trying to read data, then it simply spits it back out.
This is ONLY Apple product I've ever purchased that not only does not work, but is completely out of line with the quality of Apple products. Apple needs to scrap this and do better for customers used to much better engineering in products from them. I cannot recommend this product in any way. I literally threw my money in the trash.

Six months and counting, works great!

So far, it's a really great device for my needs.

Burns DVD-Rs quickly and easily, matches my MBP, and doesn't give me any trouble. Mac simple, A+

    Exactly What Was Expected

Beautifully Packaged, Quality Feel, Works On Every Disc I have Used So Far
May be Double The Price Of Other External Drives But IT WORKS
I wasted too much time with the cheap ones

    Love it!!

To all of the "expert complainers" out there....if you want to watch blue-ray, use your blue-ray player and your TV. This product is about convenience and that's what it delivers. If you put a scratched up, DVD, or CD in, don't expect forgiveness from the drive for your lack of care for your discs. If you want to watch while you're in bed, then get a portable DVD player to watch whatever it is you need to watch.

I paid $79 for mine when I purchased my Mac.I bought it for the times I am away from home, be it traveling, or whatever. I bought it for the convenience. If it quits working, I'll take it to the Apple Store and take care of the problem. What I WON'T do is gripe and moan in a product review and cry like a spoiled baby. Some of these people writing these reviews wouldn't be happy with ANYTHING other than being UNHAPPY.

    Clunker

Used it once a few months ago and had a problem with it then. Now no icon comes up.Tried in all 4 USB ports on my IMac. Has to be the drive because other peripherals work.I love my Mac but am disappointed with this . You would think they could come up with something better than this. I will be looking for something else. Run... run like the wind!.

Worst Apple Product I've Ever Purchased

This device rejected about 10% of all CDs despite the discs being in near perfect condition (I bought the drive to update some of my music library into the 21st Century). A much-inferior, older, and clumsier computer at work had no issue importing any of the CDs that were rejected by this drive. And it's terribly slow, often importing at a rate of 5X (I have a 2015 Macbook Pro, so it's not the computer). This is the worst Apple product I've ever had. They must have outsourced its manufacture cheaply and slapped their logo on it. I returned it.

    Useless device

This "device" is a piece of junk, literally!
Will not eject disks, messes up OS, and requires multiple attempts to remove the disks from the screen/system,
I just smashed one out of frustration on concrete floor. Shame on you people who designed this... (or maybe who made this....)
Do not buy! Waste of money!

Buggy, works sometimes and sometimes does NOT

I bought this for my 27" iMac late 2013 model. I am using it with Vinyl Studio to digitize vinyl LP's. I ruined about 5 discs before I discovered that if I want it to work I have to reset the SMC pretty much every time I turn on the Mac. Unplug it before reboot, then plug it back in. I'm sorry, this is not a good drive and I don't recommend it.

    A Life saver!

My boyfriend recently got me this for christmas and i absolutely love it! I don't understand what all the other reviews are talking about, it's fast, the disc ejects easily, AND music could be synced to the iTunes. Overall a really good product and would recommend to others.

    Superdrive

Purchased this drive a few months ago. I used it three times and the disk wouldn't eject. Tried all the options I could find online and posts. My Mac couldn't eject this disk and I was getting multiple error messages. Well it's sitting on my shelf with the disk in it and I had to purchase a different brand. I would not recommend this product

    medium write error

I bought this drive to work with my MacBook Air, and the results have been disappointing. It plays CDs and DVDs flawlessly, but I receive a "medium write error" message about 50% of the time I attempt to burn a CD, and it doesn't matter what brand of discs I use. This is an inferior product and there has been no helpful support from Apple to find remedies for this problem. I have wasted money on the CDs that do not burn properly.

    Simply a sub-standard product

I've also had Apple, Mac/Lisa, Windows and Linux computers, over the last 35 years. Apple usually provides fairly sound hardware products, but their CD/DVD devices have always been somewhat unreliable. This SuperDrive is probably the worst hardware Apple has ever produced, although the CD/DVDs previously built into their desktop/laptop MACs/iMacs for the last six years have also tended to be very unreliable (e.g., skipping files, ignoring inserted disks, refusing to write disks without error messages, not responding to the various software eject commands, etc.). I suspect much of the SuperDrive's shortfalls is due to software drivers and utilities in OSX. In my case, owning over 600 DVD movies and around 500 CD music albums, I love the access and reliability of having my favorites and classics readily and consistently available. I usually rip both formats for reliable daily use both at home and on truly mobile devices (phones, players, tablets etc.), although iTunes and Apple CD/DVD drives, including the SuperDrive, is making this much more difficult. Apparently my problems are being solved, since Apple has been eliminating built-in CD/DVD drives from their PCs, and the SuperDrive units I have owned have never been reliable performers. Due to lack of support for BluRay drivers, and having to rely on third party suppliers for external CD/DVD/BR devices is reducing the utility of Apple computers for my needs.

Avoid the SuperDrive at all costs

I've owned Apple devices going back to my first computer, a II+. And this is the single worst piece of Apple hardware I have ever had the misfortune to have to use.

It is useless if your purpose in owning it is to rip CDs to your iTunes or other music library. It will spit out perfectly clean CDs--no scratches, no smears, not CD-Rs or other "unusual" format--halfway through. Clean them, wipe them, nothing helps. Another song might get ripped, and then out comes the CD again. Over and over again.

Buy literally any other brand of CD/DVD drive, and you are practically guaranteed better performance than with this paperweight. I'm going to return it to Apple after giving it more than a fair shot. Listen to everyone else on this board who has had a bad experience with the SuperDrive. I should've.

    glad it's external

I'm glad this drive is external so I can throw it away.

At first this drive seemed fine, but after some use (but mostly disuse) it stopped accepting a brand of blank DVD-R disks that it would previously burn without issue. No message, no indication of what is wrong... who knows. Perhaps it was an OS update, perhaps the drive has semi-died.

I guess to be honest I have high standards for Apple products, and while this drive is OK, it doesn't meet Apple's high standards, IMO.
