Mac Book pro charger cord does not hold up.

    • Written by Philip H from West Seneca

Agree with the other comments about the magsafe power adapter cord. Ours cracked near the connector exposing the sheath and wiring, causing the power connection to be erratic. Poor quality design and material! Need a better fix than replacing the whole unit.

    Poor value

    • Written by Sarah M from Jacksonville

    2.5 years for this charger.

After about the first year yellowing got pretty bad on the rubber cord. At 2.5 years the rubber ripped open - as others have said apple has plummetted down the "aesthetic" hole and sacrificed practical engineering (stress-relief?? nonexistent) while maintaining sky-rocket prices.

For the so-called value of an $80 charger, I expect it to last me 5+ years with moderate use. I had to use my applecare in order to get a replacement. Ridiculous.

Practicality: 3* (since there are no safe alternatives/knock-offs)
    Aesthetic: arguably 'AF'
    Value: 2* (being generous, here)

    Breaks too quickly

    • Written by Gavin M from Edinburgh

I've never been happy with Apple's power adapters. Each MacBook I've bought has needed multiple replacement adapters. The cables fray and burst and become unsafe very quickly. For a product so expensive I would expect much better quality.

    Poor quality

    • Written by Michael M from Dearborn

After 3 years of use, it has inexplicably stopped charging my battery. As others have noted, the rubber begins to tear off at the ends of the charger even with careful use. Why is something so expensive so unreliable?

    Poor design leads to failure

    • Written by Lady T from Chicago

I like the fact that the magnet drops when the cord is yanked because it keeps my macbook pro from accidentally being pulled to the floor by the charger/cord. However, the physical design of this power adapter leads to failure of the smaller cord in a ridiculously short period of time given the cost of the macbook and the replacement cost of this power adapter.

When it's time to replace your power adapter, go with a less expensive substitute.

    MagSafe 2

    • Written by Francesco V from Weston

How could it be that a cable breaks by simply doing its job. Fraying and yellowing with less than a year of use, especially if it permanently lives on my desk.

    Turtlenecks like iPhone charger

    • Written by Victoria J from Bath

For a long time, the iPhone chargers would get what I called a "turtle neck" around the base. The same thing happened with this. I got my MacBook Pro about 4 years ago. It took less than a year for it to turtle neck. The rubber covering around the base has torn over time, and now it's begun sparking from electricity. Unless you are keeping this away from pets and children, I don't recommend it.

    Ripped core showing wire inside

    • Written by Tayow S from Shellcove

After having this for 3 years the charger now is tore for this reason I have to purchased a new one. Hope Apple improve their longevity of the charger in the future as MacBook is not cheap to buy and the replacement for the charger is costly.

    Poor Design and Weak Build

    • Written by Scott E from Bury

There appears to be a common thread in reviews here and mine will be no different. After about 2 years usage the cable at the end of the adapter has frayed and fully torn. In two separate places no less!

The charger does its job, but it is clearly not built to last. There are now numerous threads of live wire exposed in the places where the cable has torn open.

I would also like to clarify that this has come from regular usage. I don't travel with it that frequently and it usually stays in one room in an area without much movement.

Though, based on stories I've heard and read I also wouldn't recommend buying a replacement charger from anywhere else other than Apple. As with most things Apple, you will have to put up with buying their incredibly expensive, proprietary - and in this case, poorly designed - items.

    Doesn't wear very well

    • Written by Deborah S from Sutton Coldfield

This is the third one my daughter has broken in as many years. Not cheap to buy. It would be better if the 3 parts of the unit were split so that just the broken part could be replaced instead of having to keep buying the whole unit each time.

Same as the iPhone cables. My son has gone through at least 20 apple chargers for his gadgets over about 5 years. The genuine Apple ones don't last much longer than 6 months if that.

Beautiful design but very poorly built

    • Written by Adrian B from Winchester

As with virtually everyone else here, my cable has just frayed at the point where it joins the charger block. And here I am - a year after buying my laptop - after a new charger.

I do marketing for a headphone company and its actually a big deal to talk about how robust and reinforced the cables are, as when these break the whole product is useless. Apple should take note - if a product is built to travel and to be used day in day out it needs to be built durably, particularly if its an electrical device.

I actually love the charger design - its so compact, so light and actually attractive looking, but astonishly weak. It will make me think twice before paying a premium for a retina MBP rather than a top level Windows option in future, which I never thought I'd say. I'm actually quite disappointed as this has worn far worse than my old Macbook Air charger - and both were treated the same.

Like most people my charger is starting to fail in less than a year. Basically charges my laptop whenever it wants. Very frustrating. Please change the current charger to something that won't give out in a short amount of time!!!!!!

    Poor Quality!!

    • Written by Anne R from Siloam Springs

I am buying a new power adapter every year, and I am not happy about it! This is my 3rd one. They are not cheap! I like the magnetic attachment, but this product is designed very poorly. There really isn't any alternative to getting another one when the old one stops working.

    Not Great

    • Written by Taylor M from Whitby

I have kept my MacBook and charger in fantastic shape for two years. This charger is most definitely not made to last. With all that I'm paying for this device the company could create a product that can endure some wear throughout time; especially a product that's crucial to the MacBook's performance.
