HUGE WASTE OF $$$. Faulty fan will stop working after a year.

I would give this less than one star if I could. As others have reported, the fan stopped working just out of the 1 year warranty period, Now it's just a useless lump of wires and plastic. Since Apple rarely acknowledges design/hardware flaws, we are all SOL.

Less than two years later, it's dead

I was happy with this unit when it worked. It lacked some of the configuration options of other brands, but I liked that you could manage it with Airport Utility from any device.

I used it in the living room of my 1-bedroom apartment, so should have had a strong signal anywhere, but it was weak in my bedroom. Probably could have moved it to a different room for better results, but who wants a router on their kitchen countertop?!

Anyway, it stopped working. Amber light repeats indefinitely, unit cannot be seen by Airport Utility on any device. Have performed countless soft/hard/factory resets and nothing changed. Did some research online only to learn that an internal component is likely fried and the unit is dead.

I won't bother bringing it into an Apple store, they'll just tell me to buy a new one. Not sure what I will replace it with, but in the meantime I am using an old DLink Dir-655 I had in storage. It's old and janky, but it still works ten years later, unlike any single Apple product I have ever owned.

    Lasted exactly 1 year + 1 month

This unit worked fine for the first year, but now it's one month out of warranty and it's making very loud squealing noise, overheating, and restarting. We have numerous Apple products (two iMacs, two iPads, two iPhones) and am shocked by the low quality of this product. From seeing the other reviews, it looks like this is a very common problem with this unit.

    Great Product...for About 18 Months

DO NOT BUY. This product worked seamlessly for about 18 months. Then, out of no where, it started dropping connection and had to reboot it almost daily. I thought it was a problem with my provider, but I switched over to a cheaper router and my service works perfectly now. So now I have a $200 white brick that looks cool. I have all Apple products, and this by far has been the worst product I've owned. DO NOT BUY.

    Airport Extreme 15 Months old

This wireless router worked for about 14 months, then at 14 months started buzzing and is limping along at 3.3 mbps wired and wireless, barely able to download a Youtube video, terrible and conveniently warranty was up in 12 months. I'll never buy an airport extreme again.

Junk Product (Getting overheating error in airport utility)

I had a Linksys router which works without any issues for over 6 years,

Then I brought Airport Extreme, worked ok for 2 years, now keep getting overheating error in airport utility and signals keeps dropping so much for $199.00 except for the aesthetic its a piece of junk with cheap parts, would have hoped its lasted longer.

2 of these lasted less than a year

2 separate Airport Extremes have lasted less than a year before overheating and making weird noises (even though Apple assures this is not possible),
    1st one changed under warranty,
2nd one due for a trip to the apple store as it has just given up after 11months. Another month and it wouldnt have been covered by Apples' warranty

    Whatever happened to Apple quality?

I've been using Apple products since the mid-80s. Quality & support used to be meticulous, but that's changed for the worse. Lots of software problems, now more hardware problems too.
My ISP suggested that my service was being hacked, & that I change my router password. I have 2 Airport Extremes, the main one upstairs by my computer & the second downstairs by it's very rarely used predecessor. When I began the process of updating my password, the icon showed that it was overheating. The very pleasant Apple Care tech that I was working with became exasperated during the process of attempting to address the issue.
To make a long & frustrating story short, my 15-month-old downstairs, hardly ever touched or even breathed on now out of warranty Airport Extreme is a useless brick that needs to be replaced. For shame, Apple! No wonder you're no longer manufacturing routers!

Drops signal about 5 times a week

I own both an AirPort Extreme (APE) and an Airport Time Capsule. The latter rarely, if ever drops signal, while the former drops signal about 5 times a week. The Time Capsule is the router for the network and the APE extends the network. The network ran fine for years until the APE replaced an older AirPort base station. Now it is intermittent as noted. Warranty ran out prior to the failure, so there is no fix. Apple's advice is to unplug it and plug it back it in. That works fine, until the next failure. It does hold the signal through one day so that is of some consolation.

I am waiting for it to completely quit and then replace it with something else. I would not buy another one of these units. There must be a design flaw as this appears to be a common failing in the APE.

    Don't Buy

I would not suggest buying this product because of the reliability issues that others have mentioned. I had this router for less than a year and a half, and it just started dropping signal. I tried performing a factory reset and haven’t had any luck. After performing the factory reset, it just hangs on the connect Ethernet cable step in airport utility. I took it into the apple store and talked to apple care, and they confirmed it was a hardware issue. I would recommend going with another manufacturer after this router functioned for less than a year and a half and costs $200.

    Limited and constrictive

Understanding the basics of how networks work, this device does not offer much stability or customization. I have tried multiple times to set up an extender that is not an Apple product and of course it was not compatible, as far as security goes it is fine. Even under the advanced settings there is not a lot to work with, I can barely view what devices are on my network. In addition to this, if I did not want someone on my network I do not have the power to kick them off even as admin, which is very disappointing.

Apple AirPort Extreme Model A 1521 Bast Station

Whilst this may work well in an all Apple environment this device is NOT compatible with Telstra WIFI modems if used as a range extender. It was sold to me by my local JB HIFI store and I was told it would work. They were wrong, it does not work. I wasted 4 hours of my life trying to get it to work and then on the phone with Apple. Apple have gone out of their way to make it difficult for non Apple users. The device is useless. The Apple tech I dealt with even admitted Apple make it super hard for people in an attempt to move them across to an all app Apple environment. That's reprehensible!

3rd AirPort Extreme in the last 5 years

Got the AirPort Extreme after my last one stopped working in 2015. Now the fan is constantly running and a message says it is overheating, yet it is cool to the touch. Reading the forums, it seems this is a common problem. Wifi still works for the time being but it appears its days are numbered until the fan finally stops working. I really want to love this product, but reliability is a definite problem.

    Disappointed

Purchased my AirPort Extreme September 2015.

I had been delighted with it, so easy to setup and great coverage.

However today it went faulty. It will no longer work as a wifi network and disappears from finder after 5 minutes.

It is only 15 months old. I've just taken it back to where I bought it from and they say Apple only guarantees for a year. This item should last much much longer. I will try an Apple Store tomorrow.

I can't access the disk attached to my new airport extreme from windows 10.

This may be a windows 10 compatibility issue but I thought the Ethernet protocols used were standard.
Anyway I need to buy a new router.
    The help is helpless.

Terrible, drops and then it constantly says "unexpected error"

The router after 6 months, drops constantly and resets itself. It gives an error "unexpected error, please try again." Each time, it requires a hard reset and you have to manually adjust the settings for it to connect again. This is my 3rd AE going back 9 years. This will be my last router from Apple.

Poor range and frequently drops out.

Far worse signal than the standard iiNet/Belkin unit sitting next to it. Worse it may look pretty, but it has a fan in the base (i.e. moving parts to wear out). The epitome of form over function. Even the older model Airport Extreme performed better.

It supports 5GHz 802.11 AC, but my iPhone 6s will never use it because the signal is so much worse than the 2.4GHz 802.11n signal. This is especially bad given that the 5GHz range is clear of competing signals while every router around us competing in the 2.4GHz range.

Don't waste your money on this one.

Apple's Router's are awful after of 15yrs of using them.

I will never buy another Apple router.. They are awful.. I only did because I have everything Apple.. Don't do it..The router barely goes 40ft with no obstructions.. I've used other routers and they are light years better than Apple's.. My internet service is screaming but Apple's router just slows it or cuts it out all the time.. Don't waste your money...
